Gastronomy
Cuban cuisine is a result of the Spanish and African influences on the country throughout its history. It is mainly based around pork, rice, legumes, vegetables and fruit and, thanks to the wealth of its coastline, fish and shellfish are never far from the table.
Some of the most popular culinary specialties are "Moors and Christians" Rice, a mixture of white rice and black beans, roast pork, "Ropa Vieja" (literally old clothes, actually shredded beef), yucca, "Vianda frita" (fried marinated beef) and lobster enchilada.
Two outstanding drink options are the Mojito and the Daiquiri, cocktails based on Cuban rum, the national drink of Cuba.
Shopping
Havana cigars and rum are the two best gifts to buy in Cuba.
Both can be bought in the larger hotels or in shops in tourist resorts.
Cigars can also be bought in any cigar factory in Havana, such as the Partagás facility.
