Gastronomy
Mexican cuisine is one of the most delicious and varied in the world. "Tortas" (flour tortilla wraps) form the basis of its gastronomy, highlights of which include grilled meats with spicy sauces, salads, legumes and a wide variety of luscious fruits.
Octopus, squid and shrimp, marinated in lemon, grilled, fried in bread-crumbs or served in sauce, as well as flavorful freshly-caught lobsters in the coastal regions, are other delicious examples of the country's fine cuisine.
Eating well is a tradition among the inhabitants of the Oaxaca region. "Mole", "Tlayudas" (corn tortillas), "Tasajo" (thinly-sliced salt-cured beef) and "Quesillo" (a strong local cheese) are some of the specialties that can be sampled in the area's many traditional restaurants.
Visitors will find restaurants specializing in both Mexican and international cuisine serving the very freshest, tastiest fish and shellfish with "mojo de ajo" (spicy garlic relish), simply grilled, fried or prepared in many other different ways.
Shopping
Strolling through Mexico's craft markets, shops and boutiques, visitors will find delicious local produce such as chocolates, cheeses, "mole" pastes, coffee, mezcal creams, "pan de yema" (anise-scented buns) and "chapulines" (deep-fried grasshoppers!)
Shopping in Huatulco is a real experience.
You'll also find beautiful examples of local craftsmanship such "alebrijes" (carved wooden animals), black pottery figures, tablecloths, rugs and bedspreads.
These and many other lovely souvenirs can be found at the 5 de Mayo Market and the Santa Cruz Craft Market, both open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
