Málaga is one of the 8 provinces that make up Andalusia, a region in the south of Spain characterised by its diverse landscapes, privileged climate and the hospitality of the people. Málaga was founded by the Phoenicians, at the present-day site of the Alcazaba. Later it became a Roman confederate city. After being won back from the Moors by the Catholic Kings, the city spiralled into decline. Málaga’s great miracle was the development of the Costa del Sol, which has turned it into a world capital of tourism. | |

The Picasso Museum – Buenavista Palace. This sixteenth-century palace (the most important example of the stately architecture of the time) houses over 200 works – paintings, drawings, sculptures, ceramics and engravings – by Pablo Picasso, all donated by Christine and Bernard Ruiz-Picasso. |
La Concepción Botanical-Historical Garden. One of the jewels of Málaga. The estate Finca de La Concepción is Spain’s most beautiful and most important tropical garden, and one of the best to be found anywhere in Europe. It was created in 1850 by the Marquises of the House of Loring, and awarded the status of Historical-Artistic Garden in 1943. |
El Verdial. A rustic music style that is specific to Málaga, featuring singing, instruments and dancing of a kind predating flamenco music. It is distinguished from the latter by the multi-instrumental accompaniment of strings and percussion, signalling an Arabic influence. |

The produce most typical of Málaga are the vine, the olive, cereals, and fish, such as gilthead bream, hake, little by-catch fish and turbot. Owing to Málaga’s links with the sea and to the Mediterranean diet, fish takes pride of place on the dining table. Among the traditional offerings, the "pescaíto frito" (little fried fish) is a must-try. Another speciality in the zone is going out for tapas in the bars – a handy way of trying a bit of just about everything. |

Málaga is a good city for shopping. You can find everything from the most down-to-earth (clothes, footwear, bags, accessories...) to the finest products the region has to offer: craftwork, antiques and works of art. A recommended spot for shopping is the Historic Centre, which is ideal for shopping in the most convenient way possible; there are a number of municipal car parks and areas in which parking is allowed. Besides, many of the streets are pedestrian, making everything more pleasant as you stop off at any of the over a thousand shops located there. Taking Larios street as your guiding thread, make your way along the bank of the river Guadalmedina and the streets Carretería, Álamos and Alcazabilla. |
