Oviedo (or in the Asturian language Uviéu) is an Asturian city and council dating from medieval times (the eighth century), and it is the capital of the Principality of Asturias (Spain). It has 215,371 inhabitants. It is the region’s commercial and business capital, and its administrative and university centre. Legend has it that king Fruela I of Asturias set out hunting one day with his friends, and they stopped off to eat in an idyllic spot – somewhere near where the city of Oviedo now stands. During their conversation, a question was put to him: Where are you going to start building the city to house the court?, to which the king replied in Latin: Ubi edo, which means «where I eat». The city of Oviedo was erected on a hill that the Romans had called Ovetao. Its inhabitants – the ovetenses – are familiarly known as carbayones, and they have a cake called a carbayón that is typical of the city.

Gastronomy
The local dish par excellence, in Oviedo and in the rest of Asturias, is the bean stew calledfabada, which is made using haricot beans (‘fabes’) and various pork sausage meats such as the red chorizo and the black morcilla.
Another traditional dish, albeit one of uncertain origin, is the ‘pregnant bread roll’ Bollo Preñado (bollu preñáu), – which is a bread roll with a chorizo-sausage filling.
The ‘desarme’, is a culinary festivity held on 19 October each year in restaurants and private homes, the usual offerings being chick peas with cod, spinach and tripe, and rice pudding.
Los Carbayones’, are the typical sweet pastries of the region. They consist of three folds of puff pastry filled with a mixture of egg, crushed almonds, cognac or sweet wine, and sugar, to which is added a topping of syrup made from water, lemon juice, sugar and cinnamon.

Cider, is the hallmark local drink. It is made from fermented apple juice, and its origins may go all the way back to Roman times.

Shopping
Calle Uría, is clearly Oviedo’s main shopping area, featuring the headquarters of banks and insurance companies as well as department stores and boutiques.
After the initial sweeping pedestrianisation schemes, other nearby streets also became major shopping venues, chief among them being calle de Gil de Jaz Independencia, Doctor Casal, Covadonga, Melquiades Álvarez and the street called Calle Nueve de Mayo, housing the shopping centre Centro Comercial Salesas.
There are also a number of department stores and shopping centres: the Centro Comercial Los Prados, located in the Teatinos district on the site of the former abattoir beside the A-66 motorway, and the Centro Comercial Parque Principado (Paredes de Siero), which attracts flocks of Oviedo shoppers every day despite being on the border with Siero council.
Lastly, mention must be made of the future shopping centre – probably the El Corte Inglés department store – which is to be sited in the Princesa Letizia Trade Fair complex, in the Buenavista district.
