| Maryland's identity is anchored in the waters that boldly sprawl across its inland mass. How could it not be? There is water all over the place. 23 main rivers and numerous bays infiltrate this gunshaped state. |
| Of Maryland's 23 counties, 16 border the tidal shoreline. So do the state's largest city, Baltimore, and its capital, Annapolis. |
| Located on the eastern coast of the US, with a population of five million people and covering 10,500 square miles. |
| Maryland is surrounded by Virginia and Washington D.C. on the south, Pennsylvania on the north and the Atlantic Ocean and Delaware on the east. | |

| Although at times its proud inhabitants might feel overlooked by the attention given to nearby Washington, D.C. and its political power, Baltimore is a city with a personality of its own, being the financial and educational center of Maryland. |
| The Inner Harbor is an example of the pride that the people of Baltimore feel for their city. Once home to run-down factories and warehouses, the port has now become a tourist site which attracts crowds of visitors every weekend. Beside the water stand bright office buildings, the seven-story National Aquarium, and the glass pavilions of Harbor Place. | |
