Regional Information
Galicia - Ferrol - Spain
The city of Ferrol belongs to the province of A Coruña , one of the four provinces that make up the Autonomous Region of Galicia which lies at the extreme north-western tip of Spain.
The streets of Ferrol evince an unusual yet harmonious contrast between old and new. Between them lie such emblematic neighborhoods as La Magdalena, one of the most outstanding examples of urban development in the 18th and 19th centuries.
Ferrol offers visitors a wide variety of architectural features, both civil and religious, of great cultural interest as well as delightful beaches, peaceful "rías", or fiords, and lovely natural landscapes, as evidenced by its wealth of Cultural and Natural Heritage sites.
Places to See
Sada. One of the most important tourist municipalities in Galicia, lying in the county of Las Mariñas. Its picturesque and protected beaches, such as Arnela, Cirro and San Pedro, are perfect for swimming. The popular ceramics factory of Sargadelos can also be visited in the town itself.
Puentedeume. The entire countryside around Fragas del Eume is just made for hiking. From here, the shrine of San Miguel de Breamo can be visited on the mountain of the same name, as well as the castle and the tower of Andrade and, naturally, the traditional "feirón" which takes place every Saturday and where traditional regional products can be bought.
Neighborhood of La Magdalena in Ferrol. La Magdalena neighborhood is a unique example of the rational urban planning of the Age of Enlightenment. A series of houses from the 18th century have been preserved with their huge balconies of wrought iron railings and decorative galleries of glassed-in wood painted white.
Villa de Ares. This seaside town spreads out along a promenade beside the ocean. Here, modern and Modernist buildings intermingle with older houses of Jewish style, one of the few remains of the important Hebrew community that established itself here in the 15th century.
Cedeira. This municipality is very important in terms of tourism. As well as the town itself, the pilgrimage to the shrine of San Andres de Teixido and the fiesta of Curro de la Capelada are two of the most well-known festivals in the county.
Gastronomy
A Coruña and the city of Ferrol have always been characterized by their superb and varied cuisine in which fresh vegetables, beef, fish and shellfish are the kings of the table. Good examples of this are the numerous gastronomic fairs and festivals that are held all year round in this province of Galicia.
In January, Rice Pudding Day is held to celebrate a highly traditional regional dessert which is very popular with everyone who tastes it.
The Octopus Festival takes place in summer and on this particular occasion is prepared in "Mugardesa" style.
September sees the celebration of the Neda Bread gastronomic festival during which competitions are organized for making fish and octopus pies, home-made desserts and other typical regional products, all of which take place against a backdrop of traditional performances by local dance troupes.
Also in September, the Coquina festival is held, a type of clam from the region known in other Spanish areas as "navaja", or razor clam. The steamed coquinas are eaten in earthenware casseroles dressed with bay leaves and lemon.
Shopping
Ferrol and A Coruña are places where visitors will find numerous souvenirs to remind them of a wonderful stay.
As well as small craft shops where genuine and extremely beautiful hand-made work can be found, such as delicate pieces of ceramic, colorful oil paintings or the popular lacework from Camariñas, there are numerous shops along the streets selling famous and prestigious fashion brands, some of which are true works of art from the acclaimed Galician fashion houses.
