    “Third time guest with mixed feelings about Barcelo Huatulco!”

    I have such mixed feelings about writing this review. There were some negatives in our experience AND there were many positives. This is our third time back at Barcelo Huatulco and we were very excited to return! I was travelling with my husband and 3 teenagers, so we booked 2 rooms. When we booked, I sent 3 separate emails to request joining rooms and a quiet area of the hotel, which we had in the past. Barcelo did NOT respond to any of my emails, which was so surprising because prior years they had always responded and communicated with me before our arrival. We arrived on Tuesday, February 5th. At check in, we were told that we had joining rooms and it was a quiet part of the hotel, but when we got up to our rooms, they were not joining. In fact, our kids’ room was down the hall from us. And in regards to being in a quiet part of the hotel, we were right by the elevator and the bar was right under our balcony. We went back down to reception to try to switch our rooms, with no luck. After much frustration and pushing our need to have our kids beside us, they moved our kids to the room right beside us, which was better. We then went to our Sunwing Rep, who was very good to us and he talked to the front desk. The front desk told us that we could get ‘connecting’ rooms on the Thursday or Friday but we would have to check out of our original rooms by 10am and we would only receive the ‘connecting’ rooms at 4pm. Also, we were in a VERY loud part of the hotel, the bar was right below our balcony and kept us a wake 3 nights till about 2am due to the loud music. Sadly, on Wednesday right after supper, I got violently ill. My husband told the front desk that we would like to change rooms still, but I was unable to be without a bathroom from 10am-4pm. They responded that they couldn’t help us out then. So, it felt like our requests and our needs were totally overlooked and they didn’t even seem to care that I had been violently ill. Not sure why I got sick. The food was good and I was very careful with my choices from the buffet. I am thinking it may have come from the pool bar, as those guys are working so hard and making multiple drinks. I think there is possibly a lot of poor hygiene and bacteria growth in that small area. After I was sick, I began to watch them make drinks, and quickly decided against ordering drinks from that bar as I saw a bartender using dirty cups from one guest and gave them to another guest. Toward the end of our vacation my husband got ill as well and it took him a week at home before he recovered. This was very disappointing, to be sick on vacation. Our past experience at Barcelo Huatulco had always been a good one, but this time it had very disappointing outcomes. I don’t think we will return to Barcelo Huatulco, as they did not seem to care about any of our requests. As third time guests, we thought they would want to accommodate, but NO. So Disappointing for us!!! The bathrooms by the pool and by the games room desperately need renovating. The ones by the pool are quite gross and old and only one urinal worked in the guys bathroom. The resort needs to update these two areas!!! In regards to the games room, in past years the kids spent lots of time hanging out here, but this year they added a bunch of games that you have to pay to play, so only ping pong and pool were free. They used to have 2 ping pong tables but now they only have one. This was disappointing for my kids! I want to be clear that most of the workers were amazing, so friendly and cheerful! Our issue was the management at the front desk. The rooms were always very clean and the grounds were immaculate. The beach is beautiful and you can snorkel right off the beach if it is not too windy. The loungers were in good shape and not hard to get. There were always plenty of pool towels. A big shout out to the pool guys, who were constantly cleaning the pools and checking chlorine levels. Those guys were very on top of cleanliness. Also, a shout out to Paulo in the games room, who played hours of ping pong with my boys. They had so much fun with Paulo! Also a shout out to the Japanese Restaurant! The food was amazing and the service was the best there was!!!! Another shout out to Fernando, with his help teaching us the sail boat. Also, Edgar at the Front Desk was very polite and did try to accommodate us. He was friendly and seemed sincere even though we did not get the resolution to the rooms that we were hoping for.

    “Girls trip!!”

    This is a very nice hotel and have stayed at other Barceló hotels. You got to love a hotel that serves you drinks (non-alcoholic) when you arrive, it's like going to a friends house! This hotel sits right on the beach and has beautiful grounds.

    “Perfect Beach, good food and drinks, awesome slides for kids, best hotel in huatulco for families with young kids”

    Perfect Beach: long sand beach perfect to play with kids and very good waiter service Good food and drinks: Good mexican food served throughout the day; specialty restaurants are fine, would recomend the italian and mexican restaurant Pools: awesome slides for kids, it has a mini water park on the pool area! Summary: best hotel in Huatulco for families with young kids!

    “Great service, nice hotel”

    We are currently staying at this hotel. We were worried after reading some negative reviews about some construction going on. Construction is over!!! The restaurant that was closed due to remodeling is now open and beautiful with a view to the ocean. The beach and the sea water are beautiful and super clean. No trash, no algae. Absolutely gorgeous. The staff is super friendly! Aldo and Fernando in entertainment in the pool area are super friendly. Service at the pool was slow yesterday, but I see more waiters today. Food is okay in my opinion. Nothing espectacular. My dad is with us on a wheelchair and everything is accessible to/from the rooms to/from the lobby to/from the restaurants and to/from the pool. We had dinner last night at the Mexican restaurant and service was great. The hotel is not a luxury hotel, but everything we need.

    “Week Log stay at Barcelo Huatulco”

    My wife and I just spent a week at Barcelo Huatulco (July 25 to August 1). The hotel grounds are well kept with beautiful gardens. We had an upgraded Premium level room with a partial ocean view. The room was nice with adequate amenities. The premium level offered free room service we we took advantage of on several mornings for breakfast. It was also convenient to have access to the mini fridge with beverages and snacks. Included with the premium level was wifi on two devices. We had no issues with the wifi which worked well. Premium level also gave us priority booking access to the a la carte restaurants. We tried La Fonata (Italian) which we thought was great, good food and nice atmosphere with piano player. We also tried sushi restaurant which we did not care for. It seemed like all sushi rolls had cream cheese which was not very authentic sushi for us. The Agave Mexican restaurant was also very good, with variety of local foods. The other a la carte restaurant was closed due to remodeling. Which brings me to my next point. During our stay the Tortuga restaurant and pool bar were closed for remodeling. It is understandable that the resort must do renovations but I feel that they should have made up for that restaurant being closed. There was no food or snacks offered at the pool area which I feel should have been addressed. They could have easily had a BBQ going for burgers and hot dogs or even a temporary taco stand. As far as pool bar they did open half way through our stay which made it more convenient to get drinks. Prior to it opening you had to wait for server or go to lobby bar to get drinks, the only other bar open. The food at the buffets was good, but I feel there could have been more variety. It seemed that everyday was very similar to previous day. And additionally the Airconditioner in the Dona Rosa buffet didn't seem to be working which made it for an uncomfortable meal. The hotel should also address no Airconditioner in the lobby bathrooms, which was extremely hot and uncomfortable to use. The pool area was nice and the staff did a good job keeping kids out of the adult pool. Something that could help keep kids out of adult pool would be a few more signs stating adult pool only. I also feel that the resort should invest in a proper audio/stereo system through out resort including pool area and lobby bar. It seemed a bit tacky to have portable PA systems for music, which didn't adequately cover the areas in need of music. I don't mean for this review to be all negative, but I'm simply pointing out issues that could be resolved making this a very strong 4 star resort in stead of the 3 star rating that I am giving. Overall my wife and I had a great time at the resort. We also booked several tours offered by the company in the lobby area. We did the City Tour which was great and very informative and we did the semi private bays tour which was also fantastic. I also must add that I feel the price for the tours was very fair. Thank you Barcelo for making our first time to Huatulco a very memorable experience. We hope to visit again in the near future.

    “Great service, nice hotel”


    We are currently staying at this hotel. We were worried after reading some negative reviews about some construction going on. Construction is over!!!
