Description of the festivity, what's included in the party in Thailand.
During the full moon of the twelfth lunar month, according to the Buddhist calendar, which normally coincides with November, one of Thailand's biggest celebrations takes place: the Loi Krathong, or "The Light Festival". This festival can be experienced not only in Bangkok, but all over the country, especially where there are rivers, canals or water sources.
This magical night is celebrated at the end of the rainy season and the Thai people pay a very special homage to Mae Khongkha, the Hindu goddess of waters, following an ancient Brahman custom. The custom consists of making the krathong, a small boat-like basket made of banana tree leaves, float on any body of water, whether a river, a pond or a lake.
A krathong is an offering which conveys gratitude for all that is good. A new phase begins, and prayers are said to leave aside all that is bad. It's a type of spiritual renovation. Everyone is welcome at this party and visitors are even encouraged to make their own krathongs and watch how the water takes them away along with all the rest.
