Description of the area

Cancún is a beautiful city with more than 20 km of beaches, where you will be able to appreciate the thousand shades of blue multiplying towards the horizon, and where you will find stunning reefs, countless dream-like landscapes and interesting traces of Mayan cultural.

Cancún is situated in the northwest of the Yucatan Peninsula, right in the heart of the Caribbean, and it offers an endless list of things to do and entertainment opportunities thanks to its broad, complete range of additional services which includes shopping centres, bars, restaurants, clubs and golf courses.

Mexican food is amongst the most diverse and delicious in the world. Corn tortillas form the basis of Mexican cuisine, highlighted by grilled meats, accompanied by somewhat spicy sauces, salads, vegetables and a wide variety of delicious fruits.

Octopus, squid, and prawns, whether soaked in lime, grilled, battered or served in a sauce, alongside tasty lobsters freshly caught in the coastal areas are just a few delicious examples of the country’s cuisine.

Cancún’s great diversity may also be seen in its local traditional cuisine. The most traditional specialities include poc-chuc, marinated turkey, black turkey stew, stuffed cheese, panuchos, white turkey stew and papatzules.

Chichen Itza: Mayan ceremonial centre in which the pyramid, observatory and ballcourt are preserved

Xcaret: ecological park with underground rivers and beautiful beaches, ideal for those who love to dive

Tulum & Xelha: Tulum was the only walled Mayan city, while Xelha is a nature reserve

Riviera Maya: about 45 minutes along the road from Cancún is a series of traditional fishing towns and a variety of tourist resorts

In Mexico, you will be able to find some wonderful traditional and authentic handicrafts crafted in ceramics, copper, leather, cloth and macramé. Beautiful silver creations from Taxco are also great examples of the skill of Mexican silversmiths.

In some local markets in Cancún, such as Mercado 23, Mercado 28, or Cancún & Xcaret, you can find a great number of examples of Mexican handicrafts, such as Mayan pottery figures and traditional garments from the region. In Mexican markets you can also buy Xtabentún, a liquor made with anise and honey that is very popular in the Yucatan Peninsula.

In Cancún, you will also find several shopping centres, such as Plaza Caracol, Plaza Forum, Plaza La Isla, and Plaza Kukulcan, all of which are open from 10.00 to 21.00.
