Description of the area
With its 7 islands, the Canary archipelago is one of Spain's natural paradises. Each island is different from the others, but they are all united by a single spirit and their beautiful beaches.
This volcanic archipelago was inhabited by the Guanches, from whom the first settlers of the Canaries descended. The word Guanche is used nowadays to refer to the inhabitants of the whole archipelago.
The inhabitants of Tenerife are joyful people who love celebrations and parties, which is well reflected in their popular Carnivals. A joyous celebration and showcase of original costumes.

Canary Island Cuisine
These are some typical Canary Island dishes:
· Exquisite fish dishes accompanied by Mojo, a sauce made with traditional Canary Island spices.
· Papas arrugadas (wrinkly potatoes boiled in their own skin) with mojo picón (red chilli sauce)
· Sancocho, a traditional Canary Island fish stew
· Majorero cheese, different flavours of goats cheese
· Gofio escaldado, made by mixing one of the island's most traditional products, gofio (roasted corn flour) with milk or stock
· Tropical fruit
Teide National Park. One of the most interesting visits on the island which lets you access Teide summit, the highest point in Spain. From here you can contemplate Teide´s crater with an incredible 80 km perimeter. At the same time you can enjoy the Cañadas, plains where lava fields and uniquely shaped caves have been formed.
Los Gigantes Cliffs. Exceptionally beautiful landscape of Costa Cortada in Santiago del Teide.
Garachico. Fabulous town with unique beauty; it has a small port, the most important on the island in times gone by, a beach with black sand and picturesque natural pools.
La Laguna. University town and full of outstanding architectural monuments, it used to be the island´s capital when Santa Cruz was its only port.
La Orotava. Possibly the most idyllic setting on the island. A beautiful town boasting spacious gardens and picturesque houses with their typical Canarian balconies made from tea-wood. Amongst them, are the outstanding Casas de los Balcones, two old mansions from the 18th century.
Santa Cruz de Tenerife. Capital city of the island, it boasts many gardens, such as Garcia Sanabria Park, busy streets and squares full of tourists, churches and palaces. It also has a pretty port in the middle of the bay.
Canarian handicrafts are made with techniques not found anywhere else in Spain. Examples are the banana basketwork, hand-embroidered silk knitting, knives with handles decorated with bones and horns, as well as pottery and some musical instruments like drums and guitars known as Canarian timples.
Tenerife is also home to a sweet rum, called Honey Rum. Visitors to island should go out of their way to try its unique flavour.
In Santa Cruz, the main shops are situated on Alfonso Bethencourt and Castillo streets.
During the summer you can go to the different Craft Fairs all over the island which are worth visiting due to the quality and variety of their products. The most popular ones are held in La Orotava, in June, La Laguna and Santiago del Teide, in July, and Garachico, in August.
