Cuernavaca history

Cuernavaca has been a popular retreat since the time of the Aztecs. It was first settled by the Tlahuicas, who established farms on this fertile land and built huge pyramids. The ruins can be seen today within easy distance of hotels in Cuernavaca. In the 1370's, ambitious Aztec emperors invaded the region and one of them married a Tlahuican princess. That union produced Moctezuma I, ancestor to the Aztec ruler whom Hernán Cortés defeated in the Spanish Conquest. In 1520, conquistadors swept through Cuernavaca. Like generations of Aztec nobles, Cortés fell in love with the mild climate and luxuriant vegetation of the area, and in 1526, he built a palace there. The beautifully conserved structure is just one of the historic sites within 10 minutes of the Occidental Cuernavaca hotel.
