La Barrosa beach is over 8 km long and stretches from the islet of Sancti Petri to the so-called Torre del Puerco (Pig Tower). Located in Cádiz it is one of the best loved beaches in Andalusia and perhaps in the whole of Spain.
It is divided into 3 parts; the first lies between “Sancti Petri” Marina and Pinar de la Barrosa peri-urban park, located in the residential area of Costa Sancti Petri, a stretch of rugged coastline bordered by pine forests and other luscious vegetation. The second is urbanised with a seafront promenade brimming with bars and restaurants and other tourist services such as showers. There is also a Spanish Red Cross station and a local Police and Civil Protection station. The third wilder and more virgin part, which is nearer to Novo Sancti Petri in the direction of Conil, is the location of many summer beach and snack bars.
This stunning beach is considered one of the very best beaches on the Cádiz coast and in Andalusia thanks to the fine, clean sand, crystalline water and beautiful sand dunes and cliffs which characterise the virgin area.
La Barrosa beach is also highly rated amongst the many visitors who come here to enjoy surfing, kitesurfing, windsurfing, canoeing and sailing all the year round thanks to the fine weather and extraordinary conditions of this beach for practising water sports. A clear example of sustainable development.
Just a few kilometres away you can enjoy everything the Conil coastline has to offer including different types of beaches ranging from intimate coves of outstanding beauty, to large expansive beaches with no buildings in sight to spoil the views, leaving you to enjoy them in their virgin state.
The beach at Conil merges into Playa de El Palmar, an extensive virgin beach over 4 km long where you can still find quiet uncrowded spots to relax and enjoy the peace and quiet. A short walk away is Zahora beach, one of the last virgin beaches in the province, beside the Cape of Trafalgar and its famous lighthouse, and also the well-known beach at Caños de Meca. There are nudist areas located on these last two beaches.
If you have a little longer it is really worth taking the time to visit the beaches at Tarifa such as the Atlanterra, an urbanisation in Tarifa declared a Centre of National Touristic Interest and situated 55 km from Novo Sancti Petri. It has a magnificent beach, but if you continue along the cliff road you will get a lovely surprise… the famous Playa de los Alemanes, a picturesque cove surrounded by cliffs dotted with a few houses, where you can enjoy the fine sand and crystal clear waters
The next beach in the direction of Tarifa is Bolonia beach, a nature reserve that extends for over 10 km. Next to the beach you can visit the Roman archaeological site of “Baelo Claudia”.
"Ignoring how close it is, we seek it far away", states a short Japanese poem. And this tranquillity is closer than we think…
