Prizes and awards
The hotel Barceló San José is affiliated with the Plan Cristal programme, which certifies hotels and restaurants that have attained the highest standards in hygiene. This has been created by the English CheckSafetyFirst programme. The establishments affiliated with the programme are audited monthly to verify that hygiene and food safety policies are being met.
The programme is designed as a tool for health and hygiene management, so as to help tourist, recreational, catering and hotel industries to have an adequate control over inherent risks associated with the water used in recreational facilities (including Legionnaires’ disease), and to have safe and healthy foods provided to guests, visitors and staff.
They are carried out in the hotels in the Barceló Group and are based on protocols and monitoring of over 250 points in compliance with World Health Organisation(WHO) guidelines.
The hotel Barceló San José was given the Award for the Best Hotel in Central America in the Plan Cristal programme.
The programme is called Cristal because it is aimed at: identifying risks and making them transparent, using technology, analysis and logistics.
The programme provides a consistent approach to achieve the goals and objectives of the overall policy by clarifying the following:
· Risks during the preparation of food
· Risks inherent in water (including swimming pools)
· Control methods that can be used to prevent these risks
· Internationally accepted standards of good food hygiene practice
· How to measure the effectiveness of the risk controls
· Effects that can produce any change in the process of food preparation
Sustainable Tourism Certificate
Sustainable tourism development promotes the balanced interaction between the appropriate use of natural and cultural resources, improving the quality of life of local communities and the economic success of the activity, aspects that contribute to national development. In Costa Rica, since 1993, the Costa Rican Institute of Tourism (ICT) has promoted the Certificate for Sustainability in Tourism (CST), in order to incorporate the concept of sustainable development into the model of national tourism development.
With this tool the destination contributes strongly in providing quality to customers, both from the point of view of service, as well as of the environmental conditions of the immediate surroundings. In this way, the comprehensive strengthening will allow for a healthy and balanced economic, social and environmental tourism, opening up new possibilities to achieve a competitive advantage in an expanding market.
Description of the CST
It is a programme that aims to provide categorisation and certification to tourism companies, according to the degree that their operations move closer towards sustainability. With this objective, the following aspects are assessed:
· Physical-biological environment: evaluates the interaction between the company and the surrounding environment, analysing factors such as waste water treatment and the protection of flora and fauna, among others
· Plant services: assessing aspects related to the internal systems and processes set up in terms of waste management and the use of technologies for saving electricity and water
· External customer: evaluating the actions performed by the management to invite the customer to participate in the implementation of the company's sustainability policies
· Socio-economic environment: evaluating the identification and interaction of the establishment with the adjacent communities, analysing, among other aspects, the degree to which hotels respond to the growth and development of the region through the generation of employment and the achievement of benefits for the community.
Levels of sustainability
The CST standard evaluates businesses under a system structured by levels defined on a scale of 1 to 5. The integration and sustainability processes that companies face at every level, result in an exemplary company in terms of sustainability.
Tourists staying in an establishment with CST can be sure that actions are undertaken in all processes of business management, in order to avoid negative impacts on the environment, culture and society.

World Travel Awards
For the second year running the Hotel Barceló San José has been recognised by the World Travel Awards.
2013 saw the 20th anniversary of the World Travel Awards (WTA), which has awarded the best hotels and destinations in Central and South America. The awards ceremony 2013 took place recently in the Templo Huacca Pucllana, located in Lima, Peru. Attending were a large number of tourist industry representatives and specialised communications media from over 30 countries.
The jury, presided over by Graham E. Cooke, founder of the WTA, chose the Barceló San José in Costa Rica, which has a large convention centre, as the “best airport hotel”.
As stated by the president and founder of the World Travel Awards, Graham E. Cooke, the region of Central America and South America is an example of innovation and “passionate promotion of tourism such as the unique choice of hospitality products and services".
These awards, considered the “Oscars” of the tourism sector, were created in 1993 with the aim of awarding excellence in the tourism industry.
