Prizes and Awards
Ecological Blue Flag
The Occidental Tamarindo hotel has been awarded the Ecological Blue Flag for the fourth year running. This is a programme put forth by the Aqueducts and Sewer company ("AyA", for its initials in Spanish), whose main aim is to minimise the risks caused by effects of climate change in the various regions of the country.
The programme is divided in two sectors: Mitigation and Adaptation; the hotel participates in the Mitigation sector.
Among the initiatives of the programme there are 3 main elements:
· Emissions reduction at their origin, which includes the following sectors: energy, transportation, agricultural, soil management (including changes of soil use and deforestation reduction), industrial, solid waste management and tourism (and its associated air transport).
· Development of carbon absorption strategies such as reforestation and the regeneration of natural forest, as well as avoiding deforestation.
· Encouragement of carbon markets at local and international levels.
To achieve this award various parameters are used such as the reduction of water use or electric energy or the elimination of aerosols, which cause the greenhouse effect, among others. Its rating is done through a system of stars from 1 to 5, and the hotel has achieved a 4 star rating.
Sustainable Tourism Certificate
The Occidental Tamarindo Hotel attained the 5 levels of sustainability according to the Sustainable Tourism Certificate ("CST" for its initials in Spanish), which is a programme of the Costa Rican Tourism Institute ("ICT" for its initials in Spanish) that is designed to categorise and distinguish tourism companies according to the degree in which their operations approximate a sustainable model - in terms of management of natural, cultural and social resources.
Being a certified company helped us to understand and identify ourselves more with the protection and preservation of our natural resources, to get more involved with the community, create awareness and involve our staff as well as our guests in our campaigns of beach cleaning, recycling of organic and inorganic waste, protection of the Marino las Baulas Park, reduction of water and energy consumption, etc. Likewise, we are an example for the area of Tamarindo - since we are the first hotel to be certified by the ICT. It also allows us to extend our sales market to other markets which identify themselves with sustainability.
The Hotel is affiliated to the Cristal Plan programme, which certifies Hotels and Restaurants that have attained the highest standards in hygiene. This has been created by the English CheckSafetyFirst programme. The establishments affiliated to the programme are audited monthly to verify that hygiene and food safety policies are being met.
The programme is designed as a tool for health and hygiene management, so as to help tourist, recreational, catering and hotel industries to have an adequate control over inherent risks associated with the water used in recreational facilities, and to have safe and healthy foods provided to guests, visitors and staff.
Hygiene Quality Stamp
The Costa Rican Institute of Aqueducts and Sewers ("AyA" for its initials in Spanish), based on its lawful rights in matters of water provision and adequate disposal of waste waters, awarded the Hygiene Quality Seal to the Occidental Tamarindo Hotel with the purpose of rewarding the excellent work carried out in water provision and treatment. The programme's aim is to implement water security plans, good hygiene standards and adequate disposal of waste waters methods.
The hotel received a double award for the third year running for its participation in the programmes - involving both the restaurant and the hotel sections, with the maximum rating of 5 stars in each one; achieving a total of 10 stars.
The hotel has a treaty with the Paniamor Foundation, which intends to protect children and teens from sexual commercial exploitation. Such abuses threaten social peace, human rights, mutual understanding, respect for all cultures and people, and society's general sustainable, holistic development. For this reason the Barceló Playa Langosta Hotel as well as Barceló Hotels& Resorts expresses its emphatic opposition towards those who use our tourist activities, facilities and services that we offer, to promote, encourage or tolerate the exploitation of children and teens.
