The history of Cuernavaca

Cuernavaca was well known in the Aztec era. It was first populated by the Tlahuicas, who cultivated the fertile soil and built immense pyramids. The ruins can still be seen today, very close to the hotels in Cuernavaca. In the 1370s, the ambitious Aztec Empire invaded the area, and one of the emperors married a Tlahuica princess. The child of this marriage was Moctezuma I, and his descendent was the Aztec ruler that Hernán Cortés defeated during the Spanish conquest. In 1520, the conquistadors arrived in Cuernavaca. Just like the earlier Aztec generations, Hernán Cortés fell in love with the city’s mild climate and lush vegetation, and in 1526 he built a palace in the city. This beautiful palace is perfectly preserved and is one of the most impressive historic attractions in the city, and is just 10 minutes from the Occidental Cuernavaca hotel.

Cuernavaca hotels for travelling enthusiasts

Cuernavaca is surrounded by striking mountains with wild rivers and beautiful waterfalls. The Cuernavaca hotels are perfectly located as the starting place for adventure tours. You can abseil under a waterfall, jump into a natural pool from a cliff or trek through forests full of clouds of butterflies. A more relaxing option is walking through the Chapultepec Ecological Park, which has marked paths and bridges that cross small streams. There are two unmissable places to visit for history enthusiasts: the Cortés Palace and the Xochicalco archaeological site, at the base of the ancient pyramids. Art lovers will find the Robert Brady Museum irresistible. It is an old building full of eclectic works of art created by Robert Brady, an American author who lived in the city until 1986. Cuernavaca is also well-known for its language schools that attract people of all ages who wish to learn Spanish. One option for students is a relaxing stay in the Barceló hotel, in the centre of Cuernavaca city, which is known for its history and natural environment. It is the capital of the State of Morelos.
