Description of the area

Estepona is one of the most important tourist cities of the Costa del Sol (coast of the sun). It boasts a privileged location on the Mediterranean shores. Its location between the mountains and the sea make it possible to enjoy a great variety of activities and attractions in the same city. In addition, the incredible long coastline offers a wide range of facilities to practise all kinds of water sports.

It's a city that still preserves its agricultural, fishing and farming industries as its principal economic engines, although tourism is in the top position thanks to the magnificent climate, impressive beaches, marina, excellent cuisine and top quality tourism offered in Estepona.

The cuisine of Estepona is characterised by a notable preference toward fresh sea produce from the local sea waters. For this reason we can savour a great variety of "pescaito" (seafood): prawns, anchovies, octopus, red mullets, and all without losing the traditions of the tapas served at the bars and wine cellars that you can find in the old town or at the port.

The main typical dishes of Estepona cuisine are. gazpacho (cold vegetable soup), sardines on skewers or "a la teja"; fried anchovies or country soup.

Thanks to its rich history, Estepona has a great cultural heritage. You can miss out on visiting:

The Church of Nuestra Señora de los Remedios

The origin of this church is in a legend. The legend tells that in the year 1400 this place was a forest full of pine trees, and the neighbours of Estepona found a crucifix which they attributed to the first Christians - those who lived during the Muslim era. They built a shrine in the place where they found the crucifix, with the very trees they had to fell to make space for the edification. It was called Cristo de la Veracruz and the neighbourhood where houses were gradually built was called by the same name. Along with the shrine they founded a hospice called "de la Purísima Concepción de Santa Ana".

Torre del reloj

(tower of the clock). The Torre are two remains of a church ordered to be built by Enrique the IV (1472). It was Arabic in origin but after the Castilians took over, the mosque became a church - with the tower becoming a bell tower. In the 18th century a neoclassic style dome was added, decorated with garlands, volutes and bucraniums. It is situated on the plaza Torrealberga

Remains of the Castillo (castle) San Luis

Constructed by the Catholic Kings to reinforce the walls of the villa.

The Estepona coast extends for more than 20 Km in which some first-class beaches can be found. There are magnificent beaches in the urban area.

La Rada

La Rada beach, located opposite the urban centre, has been recently renovated. It is the most extensive and the most crowded throughout the year.

Playa del Cristo
La Playa del Cristo beach, is located right at the end of the town, west from the port. Regenerated recently, it forms a nice small bay and creates a pleasant area sheltered from the winds. Due to its location the sun shines upon this area for more time during the dusk hours.

Estepona also has some magnificent coastal beaches

La Galera and Bahía Dorada beaches are spectacular and beautiful. They are found in rocky cliff areas that constitute beautiful seascapes.

In Estepona there is a big local handicraft tradition. These are commercialised in the typical flea markets which are very popular in the city and where you can find works done in leather, ceramic, artistic glass, polychromy...
The most popular markets are:
Wednesday market

located in the Canequiqui, where you can find fruits, vegetables, plants, clothes, shoes, handicraft works, furniture, jewellery, paintings... and everything at great prices.

The Sunday market

On Sunday mornings, the Estepona Port transforms into an improvised focus point where you can find all types of handicraft objects, pottery, forged pieces, embroideries, etc...

Mercado de Abastos

(supplies market). It is a place of daily transit for all residents of Estepona. Among the products to be found are meat, fish, fruit and flowers, all fresh and of top quality.
