The history of Cuernavaca
Cuernavaca was well known in the Aztec era. It was first populated by the Tlahuicas, who cultivated the fertile soil and built immense pyramids. The ruins can still be seen today, very close to the hotels in Cuernavaca. In the 1370s, the ambitious Aztec Empire invaded the area, and one of the emperors married a Tlahuica princess. The child of this marriage was Moctezuma I, and his descendent was the Aztec ruler that Hernán Cortés defeated during the Spanish conquest. In 1520, the conquistadors arrived in Cuernavaca. Just like the earlier Aztec generations, Hernán Cortés fell in love with the city’s mild climate and lush vegetation, and in 1526 he built a palace in the city. This beautiful palace is perfectly preserved and is one of the most impressive historic attractions in the city, and is just 10 minutes from the Occidental Cuernavaca hotel.
