Description of the area

With its 7 islands, the Canary archipelago is one of Spain's natural paradises. Each island is different from the others, but they are all united by a single spirit and their beautiful beaches.

This volcanic archipelago was inhabited by the Guanches, from whom the first settlers of the Canaries descended.

Lanzarote's volcanic geography has influenced not only its incredible landscape, but also its agriculture and traditions. People from Lanzarote learned how to grow crops from the black layers of volcanic sand.

This island is both a Biosphere Reserve and a Marine Reserve - a true natural paradise where you can find up to 12 protected natural areas. The World Tourism Organisation has declared it a universal model for sustainable development.

Exquisite fish dishes are accompanied by Mojo, a sauce made with traditional Canary spices.
Papas arrugadas (wrinkly potatoes boiled in their own skin) with mojo picón (red chilli sauce)
Sancocho. Traditional Canary fish stew
Majorero cheese. Different flavours of goat cheese
Gofio escaldado. Gofio escaldado is made by mixing one of the island's most traditional products, gofio (roasted corn flour) with milk or stock
Tropical fruit

Timanfaya National Park. Incredible backdrop of recent eruptions that took place between 1740 and 1820. Here you can see a great variety of active geological phenomena related to the volcanic nature of the island

Jameos del Agua. To the north of Lanzarote, at the foot of the Monte de la Corona volcano, which last erupted 3,000 years ago, there are some of the most interesting caves in the world

La Cueva de Los Verdes. Located in the north of Lanzarote, to the southeast of the Monte de la Corona volcano, there is a 6 km-long system of underground volcanic caves which connect to the Jameos del Agua

The Cactus Garden. Plantation with an extensive variety of cactus over an ancient quarry

Teguise. This was the capital of Lanzarote until 1852, and has become one of the main cultural and tourist centres of the island

Santa Barbara Castle Museum. Costal surveillance tower located on the Montaña de Guanapay, to the east of Teguise.

César Manrique Foundation. The great cultural centre of the island which gathers the works of this brilliant artist.

Museum of Modern Art. Situated in San Jose Castle, a fortress built from 1776 to 1779 under the reign of King Carlos III.
