Description of the Area
Cartagena de Indias is located in the north of Colombia. Cartagena is a city that will surprise you with its friendly people, centuries-old history, museums, ancient buildings, beaches and beautiful islands, restaurants and lively nightlife.
The typical gastronomy of Cartagena of Indias is based on traditional dishes originating from Spain and parts of Africa, that would later become the basis of its own cuisine. One of the most popular gastronomic traditions derives from Africa and is the sale of fruit by the Palenquero communities, who sell fresh fruit, or as part of a fruit salad, in different parts of the city. Likewise the people of Cartagena have the same type of traditional dishes as the rest of the Caribbean Region in Colombia, such as the Arepa eggs, Carimañola, prawn cocktail and other seafood specialities, Buñuelito de frijol, the Kola Román, and many others. As this city receives high levels of tourism, there are a great many restaurants offering different world cuisines, such as Italian, Mexican, Mediterranean, Chinese, and naturally Colombian cuisine.
