“Great Resort with a few avoidable issues that could be fixed”

We travelled as a professional couple with our 20 year old pre law student daughter. We focus on the positive in vacations which there were a lot of and then a few silly issues that could be rectified. Check in. This is the first thing you see at any hotel and sets a tone. The young man working at the front desk between 11:00pm and 12:20 am on the night of Thursday February 11th was efficient, professional and very calm. When we got to check in we found him informative and it went fairly quickly. However, it took at least an hour to get to the front of the line due to him being alone and other "guests" being obnoxious including yelling, swearing and just plain rude. We felt so badly for him and don't know how he stayed so calm. One of the worst displays I've seen of treating a person poorly. That said, the guests had some legitimate concerns, but those should have gone to management or on a review - not directed at one person who has no control over the situation. Another person working or available would have solved this and I doubt any of the guests in line, other than us, will come back to this resort. Next morning, we did actually have a poor customer service experience - the only one of our entire stay. The woman working in guest services at 9:20 ish February 12th is one of the worst examples of incompetence and downright rude/disrespectful behavior I've seen - she matches the guests the night before. WE were scheduling a la carte dinners. For us, this is important because the one thing that attracts us to cruises over AI vacations is that cruises allow you to have a dining room meal each night and be able to see the nightly shows. WE love both of these on vacation. Here, we were given 2 a la cartes and could only book 9:30 pm and 10:00 pm. Silly because the restaurants were visibly half empty most of the time. The thought is that people will pay extra but most won't and instead it just annoys them based on what I heard. This could be rectified so that people could get reservations prior to 8pm and be able to have the nice meals and go see the shows. For us, this would absolutely tip the scales from a cruise to an AI as there are so many advantages to the AI now that we've done one. Luckily, the lovely man from the night before gave us a 3rd voucher due to inconvenience and some issues with check in which, for us, completely made up for the time waiting in line and the loud obnoxious people. Guest services lady wouldn't accept it and took it away. She was dismissive, said little, roller her eyes but was polite to others who spoke Spanish. I understand more than I can speak as I used to know it reasonably well years ago so I know what she was saying to other staff. Not impressive. Also, the Spanish speaking people after us were able to book at 7 pm into a restaurant we could only get (five minutes earlier) at 10pm. In an unusual move, we went and complained though politely to a manager. She came back in a few minutes and had us booked into an a la carte the next night at 5:30! We were just thrilled and that completely set the tone back to awesome for us, in fact, back to 5 star instead of not five star. All other staff were great and hard working. Buffets: We saw a lot of negative reviews and we just don't get it. My daughter has a plant based diet but occasionally "cheats" and has dairy though not meat or chicken. I also tend towards 90% plant based with small amounts of meat and dairy No problem at all. Lots of fruit, veggie, breads, cheeses and desserts as well as beverage options. Usually protein options without meat. My husband likes his food (and does't gain weight - yeah, we hate him a little too) and he loved it. No, its not the same as a good restaurant and, yes, the a la cartes are better, but I have done cruises and lost weight due to the activity (still ate well) but here I gained weight and have no regrets. Activity: too much to fit in for our short stay of 5 nights. Needs to be longer next time. We swam every day and always found chairs/lounges. There are beach chair hogs, though, and I would suggest that be clearly written in the rules a it is annoying. People go out early in the day and put towels on the prime chairs. Carnival now has a policy where this is not allowed and they will put a yellow note on your chair. If you are still not using it (tag still there) an hour later, your towel gets taken and the chair is free. Yeah, you could be swimming, etc. so make it two hours but the point is the same. You don't own the beach or the chairs and if people would stop this practice it would be even better for everyone. Flags - we had yellow every day which was fine. Just meant some waves. It was red for a bit one day and the waves were higher; for us, we just went in only waist deep to body surf. We all swim reasonably well though. Never able to use the free equipment such as paddle boards due to yellow flags. Maybe early in the morning? Not sure but oh well, its for safety. A la cartes: Italian. Great ambiance and service. Good food. We all liked it Mexican: why do people complain about this one? We thought it was better than the Italian and that isn't intended as an insult to the Italian restaurant. Very friendly, attentive service and quite personable. Even spoke with me a little in Spanish. Again, I understand more than I can say without sounding about like a 3 year old. Hubby is from Texas and loved the food. Daughter and I had all vegetarian (except for dessert I believe it was all vegan vegan) and loved it. Maybe people need to ask if they don't know what they are ordering? Spanish: again, we really liked it. It had an appetizer buffet that had the best cheeses in the place, great service, awesome bread. The steak my hubby ordered was well prepared and tender. Japanese: soooo good and entertaining. I can see why it books up quickly. Takes a little longer though so be aware but of course its worth it. We went to the one not in the mall and it was fabulous. If you don't eat meat, they will give you just double veggies. Service: If we want to get picky, you can't seem to get a face cloth in the place and coffee refills never happened for the coffee maker. We just went to a cleaner and asked directly and walked off with 3 days' worth. I read about the face cloth issue so I brought my own. Which they took, by the way while on the drying rack. kind of funny but hardly an issue losing some walmart cloths. Don't sweat the small stuff or if you do need to complain about everything, please go to another resort - either really pricey, exclusive or perhaps there should be a grumpy zone. Overall we saw a lot of happy, hard working people trying their best to serve and do well. Other guests. This would be my biggest complaint. People were obnoxious. Not all of course but enough that it would make this a tough job. Yelling and complaining to staff about things not in their control, being overly loud and aggressive, foul language (there's a point where it's just over the top people), and really due to the guests being drunk, hungover, not understanding the rules and/or not doing a little research ahead of time. Unreasonable expectations. If you require a la carte each night and want premium alcohol, pay for an upgrade or stay in the palace. We were very happy with the lower price in the normal section. The unofficial Barceló Maya. This is a web site that can give you all kinds of info before you go so you can know what is provided, what costs extra, have a map. I researched ahead and it made a big difference for not much of a time investment. I brought the face cloths, knew where the gelato was, the times of buffets, etc. Shows: due to late a la carte times and one excursion we only got to see one. This is something I would like to see changed but, I can take my own advice and upgrade next time to get better dinner times, stay in the palace or so on. I wouldn't want prices to go up over it. The show we saw was a circus type show and we loved it. Check out was very quick and smooth. We booked with WestJet and used their shuttles and Best Day for excursions as well. WE like the security of this since, if a shuttle was late, and ran by the airline, they would know and delay the take off. Didn't happen but just in case. Miscellaneous stuff I wish I'd known: Safe - there are comments on here and we were able to store a lap top, Ipad, several phones and wallets. Still room leftover Shower: yes, steep to get into but great shower head and a separate nozzle to detach to rinse off or rinse the beach shoes. Beach shoes. WE used ours. Some areas were more rocky than others but the shoes are good and that way we didn't worry much about rocks or coral. We go out fairly far which tends to mean more coral or rocks. Towels: big and fluffy towels in the rooms and the beach towels. Room: we were at a normal superior room and found it more than enough. Clean and functional. A/C does go off if you open the door or balcony and you do need a room key to keep it on. We had it on at night and that was fine for us in February (11-16th). Plug ins are a little sparse so we brought an adapter that let us plug in 3 phones to one outlet. Oh, and the outlets are 2 prong at least in our room so we brought an adapter that would fit the two prong. I think this is illegal in Canada... TV didn't have HDMI. I hear that some do. We would have watched a movie one night that we had downloaded but so much to do that it wasn't a big deal anyway. Beach: we did not see or hear of any jellyfish. Nice sand that seemed cool even when it was hot out. People cleaning constantly. Very few salespeople; maybe cigars. You do usually have to get off your butt and, gasp, get your own drink from the beach but I saw a few people offer some cash to send staff but I don't think it's included as it is technically a pubic beach. Never saw anyone that didn't look like a tourist, though. Maybe the palace has beach service? Didn't matter to us. Beach buffets (not the bigger buffets) were still a good size and selection. Even the sports bar was good - we went there at 1am our night of arrival and were happy with fresh fruit, salad stuff, nacho stuff, pizza/dogs, etc. And ice cream. Tips: its all inclusive so up to you but I felt the service deserved tipping. I tipped $1 US or equivalent pesos per person (or bag) at each buffet and the same for any shuttle/bus boys/baggage people. More depending on service at the a la cartes. Tipped the room cleaners on the last day though maybe tipping daily would have gotten a face cloth or coffee? No idea. Bugs: We really didn't see any. Maybe one mosquito. Just iguanas and little raccoon like animals that I can't remember the name of. WE didn't see mold, mildew or have problems with moisture either. It is Mexico and it can be humid but we didn't see anything out of the ordinary in that regard. WE had a 3rd floor which means more stairs and walking but we like being able to open the balcony, though the little patios on the main floor were cute, too. Tourist cards: they give this to you when you get on your flight. In case I'm not the only one who has never dealt with this before, here is how it works: flight gives you the card. You fill it out except for one section (8 I believe) which asks for immigration info which is for people without a US or CDN passport. Keep this as it's difficult and expensive to leave without it I hear. When you are off the plane, you go through immigration where they stamp this and give it back. Keep it in your passport and in the safe. If you leave the resort, have a copy of the card and the two pages of your passport with your photo and signature . You can scan if you have the app on your phone or take a photo or use business area of the hotel. We copy all docs ahead and keep them "in the cloud" and delete when home. We also keep a copy and lock it in the safe if needed. You keep your customs declaration card when going through immigration (called passport verification)though. Then you get your luggage and then you go to customs. There you hand in the customs card. After you leave customs there is the transportation area. There are people who will ask you about your transportation even if you have it pre booked. I thought they were scammers but they actually just told us where to go to meet up with Best DAy. Not needed as we had that written down, but not harmful either. WestJet had a sign and we got to the shuttle very efficiently. Going home, we couldn't get an electronic boarding pass. You check in online ahead of time and then go to the checked in already line where they print your boarding pass, staple your tourist card to your boarding pass, take your luggage, tag if needed and send you off to security. at least at Westjet. At security at some point they take your tourist card and give back the boarding pass. Then off to the gate. Check the screens because they do not announce changes or boarding over the PA system. If you wait to hear that, you might be in trouble. Its shown on the screens. Overall, awesome, and we would go longer. A little research to have proper expectations and you won't be disappointed. Alcohol. Only my daughter drinks and only with supper so we can't comment but people seemed to be getting drunk with no problem. There was even champagne at breakfast. Beer in the mini fridge. Lots of non alcohol options, smoothies or just ask for "something refreshing" or "fruity" and they come back with something good. Those complaining about drinks watered down seemed to be the most loud and obnoxious in my opinion. Polite people who weren't hammered asked for doubles and seemed to be happy with them. It also, honestly, seemed to be those people who were complaining that " the food" made them sick. We never had a single problem. I'm clearly biased here but I think...drink all you want but if you get ill or too drunk don't make everyone else suffer for it. Kids: we didn't see any issues with children. there are kid's clubs and so on. Some people don't watch their children which is disturbing as we saw them left unattended at times but we never saw any need to go to adult only areas. We didn't find the walking excessive, either. I have no sense of direction and got lost once but it was easy to follow the maps or just ask. Got a scenic walking tour that way.

    “Beautiful Trip”

Great resort. Barcelo has very kind workers, they're on point with their service. All the rooms are clean, never have I had a problem. The rooms are a bit old, but that doesn't bother me because I spend my entire day outside not inside. Food is excellent, there is something different every day and always fresh. The beach is perfect, no rocks or big waves. It's is clear blue and I can see everything around me. It was a great family trip. They a lot of activities located within the hotel, such as the dolphin exhibit and the water park. There's also two shopping centers as well. There's nothing there that you won't need.

“Amazing family holiday, great service & staff”

My family and I have just returned from 10 days at the Barcelo Maya Beach resort and all I can say is - Wow. Great holiday in nearly every way. The only downside is the standard of the Superior rooms - they could do with an update! Other than that, the resort is great, with good facilities and pools - for both adults and kids. A truly amazing beach ( the best out of the 4 hotel group) and good food. There was always a good selection at the buffet, and the onsite restaurants were worth a visit. Apart from a lengthy check-in, the staff were brilliant - especially Archangel Chan and Melvin Bautista in the restaurant. They made breakfast and lunch at the buffet enjoyable and entertained the kids. Thank you Archangel and Melvin. We will definitely go back.

    “Beautiful tropical resort”

My husband and I just stayed at maya beach for the week. The rooms were excellent. Comfortable bed clean cozy bathroom and nice balcony. No need to bring shampoo and conditioner its provided in shower. Very please with that. It is a very large resort so bring comfortable shoes. The ocean front and pool area is gorgeous! sandy beach on maya beach end and rocks/coral on the palace end. Bring swim shoes if you stay at palace. The dining was relaxing with lots of choices to of foods to eat! Restaurant were nice. The resort exceeded our expectations! It is very large and takes some time to learn your way around. You can stay in your section if you like there are a little of everything in each section of the resort but you can explore all 4 if you want to. The mexican plaza was really nice to shop in if you don't plan to leave the resort. You really don't have to. I would recommend bringing your own snorkels to use. bring small bills. we will go there again! The whole resort was so beautiful and clean and staff was friendly and spoke english enough to communicate. we loved it! Go to this resort if you want a large resort experience with a beautiful beach!

“Celkově skvělé chvíle pouze s pár chybkami”

V červnu 2014 jsme si na pár dní vyjeli. Výlet jsme si zarezervovali přes Cheap Caribbean.com. Prostředí hotelu bylo bezchybné. Po příjezdu nás zcela ohromil jeho celkový vzhled. Lidé, kteří tam pracují, jsou velmi přátelští a vstřícní, i když jazyková bariéra může být občas problém. Pokoje by potřebovaly trochu větší péči. Celkově jsme si to tu užili.

DirectorBeachCaribe, Gerente v zařízení Hotel Barcelo Maya Beach, odpověděl na tuto recenzi.
