    “Disappointing.”

Food was below of what you would expect in a 4 Star hotel, staff were friendly but not well trained. The mini bus for Saga guests was quite often not available, due to staff shortages. A safe is available @ 4 euros a day, and car parking is 10 euros a day. The hotel is getting ready for a refurbishment, particularly the bathrooms. The wifi works well and there is a choice of quite a few English television channels. The town is a a good 20 walk away, and there aren't any local bars or shops. Both Saga reps were very good, nothing was too much trouble. The area around the hotel needs a tidy up.

Dear guest; We first would like to thank you for choosing our Barceló Punta Umbría Mar for your holidays in the south of Spain and for letting us know your concerns relating to your time in our hotel as it gives us an opportunity to look at areas which may have for improvement and for that we are grateful. We would like to apologize if some day mini bus for Saga guests was cancelled but we would like to inform that staff shortages was not the reason about this. Sorry for the inconveniences. On the other hand, we regret that our rooms were not to your liking. Do not hesitate that we will pass on your comments for future refurbishments. We sincerely lament reading that your stay was not as pleasant as it should have been and we would be very pleased to welcome you again in the future ensuring you in advance of our utmost commitment to make your next Barceló holiday experience an unforgettable one for all the right reasons. “Quiet, friendly hotel”

We spent a great week here in June/July. The food was excellent, the pool, bar and terrace areas were clean and lovely and relaxing and the room was very well tended. Staff were, for the most part, very helpful and were always friendly; this is a very Spanish area, and English isn't always fully understood so be prepared to occasionally have requests misunderstood if you only have basic Spanish. The whole resort is geared to cater for a more Spanish taste, and we loved it, though it might not be to everyone's taste. There is a fantastic beach full of families, with no end-to-end sunbeds. There is something of a promenade, and the town is definitely a working town rather than a tourist spot. We would highly recommend this hotel to anyone who likes to really get away from things, and we'll definitely be returning. Thanks for a great stay.

    “The Blind Tilers of Andalucia”

This large, modern hotel is in a fairly remote location on the Spanish southern coast so anyone arriving by air is likely to land at Faro in Portugal then face an hour and a half journey, in addition to the flight itself. Unless you're travelling from Gatwick it seems most of the UK provincial airports have an early take off time which, when added to the journey to the airport means a very early start. Being remote, there's nothing much to do apart from walking along the beach to the nearest township - about 45 minutes. The long sweep of beach runs for miles and is of very soft sand but with a surprising amount of broken seashells in it. While we were there (end June to early July), most of the guests were Spanish, many with young children in tow. (Spanish school holidays are any 5 weeks in the period mid-June to 19 September, depending on region.) The British contingent at the hotel - about 20% - all seemed to be on an all inclusive basis, if judged by the plastic wrist bands being worn. Up until the end of June and from mid-September onwards the British presence is largely made up of Saga customers (Saga louts?) The standard of food is excellent; lots of choice and as much food and drink as you could wish for. The public rooms are clean and spacious. There is a small library run by the Saga reps including an overspill (but unadvertised) section in the unmarked cleaners' room behind the Saga desk. Staff are friendly and helpful and there is a comprehensive but noisy (and late!) schedule of entertainments which usually goes on until midnight, if you happen to have a room facing over the pool or near the Bar Batavia. The hotel operates a strict policy of bagging up and removing possessions from sunbeds where they have remained unoccupied for more than half an hour after a member of staff "tags" an unoccupied lounger. That caused more than a few arguments but at least ensured that loungers weren't tied up unnecessarily. There is a returnable deposit for beach towels and no limit on the number of times they can be exchanged for clean ones. The architecture is described as "Andalucian" although we thought it a bit confusing with all the exterior surfaces being in a jumble of materials and designs ... as though someone had said, "It's about time we had a bit of brick and a portico, so let's shove one on this room." The gloomy inner atrium reminded me of prison landings but minus the jump nets! The rooms are comfortable and well appointed but the title of this review refers to the standard of workmanship in our bathroom. We got the feeling that the Spanish government has a scheme for the visually challenged amongst its workforce. It involves adhesive being applied to the walls and then the bilious-coloured tiles being thrown at them from a distance. Grouting seems to have been applied with similar attention to detail.

    “Quiet and friendly”

We stayed at the Barceló Punta Umbria Mar for a week in June and had a really good holiday. This was our second stay at the hotel and probably won't be our last. Our room was a Superior Sea View with a good balcony. The room had a large double bed which was reasonably comfortable, a small fridge, LG flat screen TV, safe, ample wardrobe, and sofa bed. The toilet was behind a sliding door and had bath/shower, bidet and toilet. The wash hand basin with mirror and magnifying shaving mirror, and hairdryer is in the area before the toilet and partially separated from the main room by a wall. The décor is Andalusian themed with tiles and could give the impression of needing a refurb. What does need replaced are the fittings such as the bath and showers and taps which are showing signs of wear and tear. The room is clean and we had no cockroaches or bugs. Dressing gown and slippers are not supplied, which in most other 4* hotels is normal in a superior room. The restaurant is good and is mainly Spanish themed which suited us. All Inclusive guests help themselves to wine and water from dispensers. The wine is actually OK but the water can be a little lukewarm. All of the restaurant staff are very nice. Bar staff at the pool are charming and quick. All inclusive drinks are fine but nothing special. The Animation Team work hard and provide a selection of entertainment from rifle shooting to aqua gym during the day. The evening entertainment is very good with DJ's, bands, flamenco, acrobats etc brought in, and not an ABBA or Neil Diamond tribute in sight. We've been before in August when the atmosphere is even more Spanish with the arrival of the main Spanish holidays. The hotel is set up for mainly Spanish guests which in our opinion makes it better, being able to speak a bit of Spanish helps a lot to make your stay simpler. Although we noticed that a group of Saga customers had everything done for them by the Rep. Safe is hired and towels are €10 deposit. Special mention for Laura one of the pool bar/ restaurant staff who is very kind, patient and helpful and speaks perfect English. One thing the hotel must think about is providing assistance in finding your room. We were pointed in the wrong direction after checking in and wandered about for ages before we found the correct lift. The beach stretches for miles with room for everyone. Punta Umbria is around 15 minutes walk away and isn't very touristy. It's worth a trip on the bus to visit Huelva the bus stop is across the road and on the Beach Resort side of the carriageway. Warning for Jet2 holiday makers! We were picked up around 07:35 and had an awful 2 hours and 45 minutes journey to Faro picking up everyone between Punta Umbria and Faro so we arrived in the chaos of Faro airport already stressed and uncomfortable. However that's not the Barceló's problem. We'll be back sometime.
