    “Bitterly disappointing”

    Poorly maintained inside and out. Frankly in places dangerous. We were in 1009. Avoid these lower numbers at all costs. Noisy noisy noisy. Not suitable for self catering. No equipment worth having. The bedding was dirty. Bed linen was fine. Beds quite comfortable. We had no hot water. Tepid at best. Friday morning was the only time it was ok. Cleaners were lovely and fighting a losing battle. The fact rhey gave a loyalty scheme has to be a joke! On the upside we got a good upper body workout every time we went to open the wardrobe sliding doors.

    “Know what your getting BEFORE you book”

    We booked a bit of winter sun choosing the Barcelo Castillo Beach Resort through “On The Beach” website and were apprehensive after reading some reviews building up to our trip (21st -24th Feb 2017) This review is aimed at helping fellow travellers make an informed decision about staying here and the length of my review is testament to me trying to recommend it at some level or the other whilst trying to give a balanced review for the readers benefit. My first bit of advice would be – Be sure you know exactly what your getting for your money in the booking, as I was seduced by the ‘glossy pictures’ of the venue and it’s facilities and gastro food pictures. Accommodation - We ended up in a 1st floor apartment/room in block 3 expecting one of the superior bungalows as featured in pictures on the website, but dissapointingly it was not to be. Our accommodation was right at the very back of the complex, and on arrival we were taken from reception to our room using a golf buggy but after being here a day realised the walk to the accommodation was not too far. By the way the resort is spread over various ‘blocks’ and each seem to offer different levels of quality and judging by the photos after returning home ours (Superior Bungalow) was the poor relation of the rooms. YES it was tired, and run down. YES it smelt strongly of bleach on arrival, YES it felt damp during our stay and NO it didn’t have the amenities as expected (such as a kettle). No way could our accommodation be described as 4 Stars, but I would say 2 stars. On a plus side the grounds were well presented. Safety & Security - I noticed plenty of security cameras and lighting around the complex, but also noticed the security pass entry gates to our complex (number 3) was almost always left open and also saw one guest at the block near the restaurant who must have lost his key, simply step through the open posts/perimeter fence step through and bypassed the security gate which incidentally was covered by a CCTV camera. I also noticed regular patrols by armed Guardia Civil police walking around the area and local police in the town area. Walking around I felt completely safe and had no concerns. Board Basis – For the first time ever we chose Half Board and actually that turned out to be the best option (for us). On reflection I would have been sorely disappointed if I had taken the All Inclusive option (although you can upgrade by the day once there if you want) HB to AI was shown as 28Euro per person each day (if that helps you decide). Drinks were reasonable I think, about 3-5 euro for a beer and about 7euro for a spirit and mixer. My observation and overhearing AI customers chatting it appeared the AI was very restrictive in terms of what was included and where you could take advantage of it. If you like a beer then beware the only choice is the local brew Tropical larger. I went to the sports bar on arrival and pleased to see a row of pumps including Guinness, Stella, and other well-known beers only to be told these were not operational and only for show, so it was a choice of Tropical or Tropical. At least with HB basis I had the freedom to drink what I wanted (at a price) and also my choice of where to enjoy the drink I bought. Food – My Observation only, that regardless of your chosen board basis you are restricted to buffet style eating in the one main restaurant for all meals. Breakfast was plentiful in terms of choice but often intensely crowded and a feeling of chaos lingers in the atmosphere. Food was replenished frequently but everything seemed tepid not hot. Evening meal, again the same as breakfast and seemed to have a theme each night even though I wasn’t really able to define it. I chose anything I could see being cooked in front of me as a rule of thumb. The staff were always completely focused on clearing tables as fast as they could with no time to engage with us at all. One night we decided to have a bottle of wine which was delivered unopened whilst we were up choosing our starter and then we failed to get someone to open it before ending our main course, so ended up taking it back to our room to finish. On balance of our canteen buffet experience we decided to have our last meal out in the steak house (as you come off the main road into the town/complex) and weren’t disappointed with the meal, drinks or welcome we received there. Facilities – Not much I can help with here as didn’t really use anything, other than pool side which was a nice setting and this was shown in the website pictures. I didn’t try the pool although inviting judging by some children’s reaction was clearly very cold. Reception & Wi-Fi – This was defiantly a reception and not a lobby for you to hang out after a meal with a drink. You could normally tell when the wifi was working (often for us it wasn’t) by the number of teenagers using their devices sat on the few 2 seat sofas in the reception area. Limited but normally no wifi outside of reception area. As previously mentioned the grounds were well kept and an abundance of various types of cactus often with a label giving its biological name. The perimeter of the complex has a decent promenade to give you a chance to decompress after a meal or other activity. Shame about the beach being closed off during what looks like a massive reconstruction and the sound of squeeking caterpillar tracks of the machinery can be heard most of the day to some degree or another. Bearing in mind this is a ‘beach resort’ with no beach, and not sure I was even told of this at the time of booking or after? On the other side of the complex and outside our room was a major piece of road re construction with the noise of that completing with the beach construction was a delight! but I guess out of the control of the resort management. Exploring – whilst the weather was warm (21degrees) it wasn’t really sunny hot so we ventured out to the north of the island Corralejo using the local bus service first into the capital Puerto Del Rosario bus terminal then back out to the resort of Corralejo which in hindsight we should have booked as it was beautiful and vibrantly busy crammed with areas within the centre to enjoy a drink or people watch from a restaurant looking over a sandy beach. Well worth a visit. So on balance did we enjoy our winter sun break – Yes Did we get what we paid for – on balance probably Yes. Would we go back – No Would we recommend it – No

    “THE IS NO BEACH AT THIS PLACERING AND ONLY SALTWATER IN THE POOLS”

    Beach is a closed area with bulldozers so I supose it is under contruction. The pool i all saltwater and cola. The wifi is verk Slow If its works. Big plus that de ARE catfriendly. There is a TNR-area whit cat-café

    “Not 4 star”

    Had a 2 week stay at the resort earlier this month. Found the resort too big the bungalows were spread over a large area making them along way from the restaurant reception and some of the pools and snack bars. Were given a second bungalow as the first was not suitable and rather shabby. The towels were changed each day and the bed linen usually every couple of days. The restaurant food was definitely not up to 4 star standard. All inclusive does not apply to everywhere...Beware. some of the drinks on the list,s had to be paid for at a reduced rate and some of the bars attached to the complex all inclusive guests had to pay with just a discount of 20%. There was no quiet lounge after dinner to have coffee or an after meal drink. This was commented on by alot of guests. There is a theatre which you can go to and have a drink but until around 9.30 p.m the entertainment is for children and very noisy. Most people went into the village for a drink or back to their apartments. There is reconstruction work being done on the beach which is fenced off and is a real disappointment as the bay is lovely. During in our stay we never saw any work being done and although we were informed by jet2 holidays about the beach it was only a couple weeks before we were due to fly. The beach is supposed to be finished by March but we were told by other people it should have been ready in Dec 2016. !!!! The weather luckily was nice during in our stay apart from the odd day and we met some very nice people staying at the resort so that made it a good holiday. The photos on Google were of the premier apartments & not of the all inclusive as we thought also some were of the nearby hotels. The staff we found to be pleasant.
