    “Vacation with kids”

Just got back from Barceló Maya Palace and had an awesome time! There were 5 of us, 2 adults and 3 kids ages 12,9,6 and they had a blast as well. I would definitely recommend upgrading to the premium level-better check in and check out, allowed 2 devices for internet, better rooms and location, discounts at stores and the Pirate water park, first pick of the fancy restaurants, club area that you can go to anytime for drinks and food. The Palace has an awesome swimming pool with a great kid area as well. The beach is awesome at the Palace as well with very good snorkeling. We stayed for 7 days and only left the resort area once for an excursion because there is enough to do at the resort. I would definitely recommend booking a nice restaurant every night and do it when you check in-the food is awesome at these restaurants. The buffet is ok at the Palace but after a few days of buffet eating it does get old. The rooms are nice, not over the top but get the job done. Again I would recommend this resort to any families-great swimming with pool and beach and lots of other stuff to do as well-we had an amazing experience and would go back.

    “Not My Favorite”

I always hesitate to give poor reviews but I have a few points of caution on this property. First, the positives: the grounds are beautiful and very well maintained our rooms ( we had two) were spacious, clean and quite nice French and Brasilian restaurants were quite good beach is beautiful and pools are clean and very nice beachfront massage was lovely most of the property staff were friendly and helpful good location Let me preface my next comments by saying that I have traveled a lot both domestically and internationally. I have stayed in all sorts of places and I am fairly hard to disappoint or aggravate, I am pretty easy-going. However, when we checked in (took hours in our "premium level"), it became obvious that we were not in our reserved oceanfront room. When this mistake was questioned, we were immediately told that we did have an oceanfront room, there was just an enormous pool area between our room and the ocean. The manner in which it was handled was so frustrating and there were endless references to managers that were never available. We were able to change rooms several days later but this was because we continued to spend vacation time hounding them. We were told to pack all our stuff one day to come back to bags still in same room (moved the next day). We were also promised a beachfront dining experience to compensate us for our trouble, no one contacted us about this and we did not chase it. At check out we also found that instead of the package discount of 25% off certain billed items, we were CHARGED an additional 25%. The lady that helped us fix this was extremely responsive but we learned she was moving to a different resort the next week. My feeling on all this is that they oversell beach front rooms and first come, first served was/is the way it works. They seemed to think that we would go away and just accept the situation as they made it very difficult and time consuming to deal with. Overall, we had a great week in the area but I would caution people to be flexible if reserving "oceanfront" and aware that check in and check out are extremely slow.

    “Best vacation ever!!”

We cannot get over it yet. We had so much fun! Friendly staff, always eager to help despite being high season. Great food, awesome activities. The Hacienda buffet was incredible and the Barcy club for kids was a must for our children each day. We got to enjoy the premium level and it made the difference. One of the advantages was free access to the hydromassage circuit at the spa which is a must!! We hope we come again and again!!!

“Another 5 star experience .. but hopefully towel situation is fixed by our next visit :)”

This is our second year in a row to visit barcelo Maya palace. Again.. some of the hardest working staff around and it's obvious in how clean this resort is from our rooms to the grounds. If you take a minute to stop and look around at all the moving parts that it takes to keep this place so immaculate on top of providing great service.. it definitely gives you an appreciation for all their hard work (grounds, servers, hostesses, wait staff, bar staff, housekeeping A+++) Before I go into details on my stay this year vs last year, I want to say the only reason I WANT to drop it from 5 stars last year to 4 stars this year isn't related to premium vs regular room. If you want the extra perks of premium and want a guaranteed location, then it's definitely worth the extra money. We would probably book it again if available.. especially with small children. But the only reason I WANT to drop it from 5 to 4 stars was the towel situation and check in. Check in was still a lengthy process (albeit more tolerable in an airconditioned room) and I really don't think I should ever be without towels at a beach resort no matter what time I need them. It's hard for me to drop it to 4 because of that because my family did have such an enjoyable time overall and it wasn't like that in the past so I'm thinking it was a temporary problem. If that situation doesn't get remedied.. I'd definitely give it 4 stars. Premium perks I was aware of: check in area, sit down dinners every night, room location, top shelf alcohol (didn't really utilize so can't speak to that - just asked for mixed drinks without specifying alcohol type), premium bar, and wifi on two devices. This year we decided to book the premium room. We went with this because of guaranteed proximity to the pool and beach. You're not able to book based on location for the regular junior suite. You could end up being at the front of the hotel (which is where my inlaws ended up for their one night at that level and it's a great location for the price) - or you could end up at the very back of the building (which we were at last year and it's definitely a walk from the back to the beach and pools). Check in: Some of the perks we noticed by booking premium was the check in. The check in didn't seem all that much faster than last year (just going off check in time and not wait time) but we also were doing our food reservations at the same time. You're also able to sit in an airconditioned lounge with food and drinks. The difference between that and regular check in is that depending on when you arrive.. you could be there for a while. Last year we were fortunate to have nobody in front of us upon arrival (as was the case this year for premium). But it backed up pretty good after us. They only had two people doing check ins. We had to check our in laws into their regular room at the main check in and the people in front of us who were 3 families back had already been standing there for 25 minutes. Their check in isn't air conditioned and you have to book your dinner reservations at another location. They were also doing check outs as well (they had 4 people between the two and two of them prioritized check outs over check ins understandably), so needless to say, it was definitely a timely process compared to other places we've stayed at. Another resort we stayed at recently had about an hour check in (but we upgraded rooms after we got there) so we've had long check ins at 2 out of 5 beach resorts we've stayed at (both times lengthy here). Rooms: the rooms were nice with a king bed and two futon type sofas that we used for our kids to sleep on. When they realized we needed those for our kids, both beds were made up. The housekeeping staff is excellent here. I always felt like my room was cleaned beyond what someone would expect, especially considering the number of rooms they do. They were always stocked with drinks and food and bathroom essentials and we would get checked on nightly for any extra needs (bathroom towels, etc) Beach Towels: BRING BACK THE TOWEL CARDS. Last year we had zero issues with towels. This year pretty much every single time the first two days I went to get a towel they were out. I think I finally caught two the first day and our room had 2 in them we used day 2. I would be told 20 minutes and i would come back and it didn't look like anything had changed. We weren't able to swap damp towels out for dry ones because of this. After I finally got my hands on some towels (they also tried to tell me I could only have one or two despite having 4 people in my family) I ended up keeping our towels and drying them on the balcony just to ensure we had towels. After the first couple of nights I was able to swap our towels for clean ones if I went before we left for breakfast. This was my first time ever having issues at any resorts when it came to towels and I was trying to think about what the difference was and last year they had towel cards that you would swap out for towels. You had to turn the towels in to get your cards back and you had to turn them back in when you checked out. I hope those being gone was temporary bc it apparently makes a difference. I shouldn't ever have to leave just to get towels in the morning and carry them around with me and I shouldn't have to carry them back to my room just to ensure I have a towel for tomorrow. I definitely prefer keeping up with multiple towel cards than lugging around towels or worrying I won't have any towels when I need them. Grounds: the grounds are beyond well kept. They were so on top of picking up cups and towels. With the number of patrons and kids there you would expect it to be somewhat messy but they stay on top of the grounds. The pools were always clean and clear. Even the beaches were kept clear of cups and trash. The hotels are so pretty and different from one another. So it's definitely worth the walk to go through each hotel and see what they look like and their differences. Pool Service: the service to get drinks to your chair wasn't very frequent because they just don't have that many servers. It definitely seemed fast enough if you're realistic considering how few of them there were. I think I noticed 2.. maybe 3 servers between the different pools. They definitely work hard, but two or three people can only do so much. But I had no issues with getting my own drinks. Service at the bar was always fast. Pools: the pools are awesome. They're huge and never feel crowded despite being at capacity. They were always very clean and clear. The slides were fun for my kids and even the older ones looked like they were big enough for them to enjoy. The slides at the other hotel seemed to be faster and drop in a pool that's a little deeper (but not unsafe deep) so if it seems a little TOO juvenile for your kids... see if that other one meets their needs better. The shaded areas usually get scooped up fast but people frequently leave towels there in the morning despite them asking you not to hold chairs. Half the time you wouldn't ever see someone use those chairs. Beach: the beach doesn't haven't umbrellas but they did have lots of trees they used as shade. There's so many fish right there off the beach for you to see and there's even turtles that you can see if you swim out far enough and bribe them with some bananas. The beach is soft in spots but also has some flat, firmer spots. There are plenty of spots that give the perfect sand castle sand. Food: we ate again at caribe and rodizio. Caribe is seafood and rodizio is Brazilian. Everyone enjoyed their meal at both places. Both our servers were awesome and fun. It's slipped my mind the names of our servers at rodizio and I hate that I can't give them their own accolades here but I do remember Jorge from caribe and he was fantastic. We had a child who fell asleep and he saw us holding him. We saw him take away his high chair and didn't think anything about it and then he put two chairs together, got a pillow, and secured the chairs with a napkin for a makeshift bed for our little one. He got to sleep.. everyone got to eat. It was awesome so thank you for that! We also are at the Spanish restaurant and Kyoto. Kyoto is a hibachi place and our chef, Augusto, was super fun and interacted with our kids and was very entertaining. All our dinners were good. I loved all the variety. The buffets also had a lot of variety. They ha d different stations cooking food fresh (steaks, fish, omlets at breakfast). It was definitely pretty good for a buffet. All our servers spoke English well enough so communication was never an issue. I found that most people spoke decent English at the resort. Transportation: they have shuttles that are supposed to make their rounds every 15 minutes. They go a certain route and do the same route in reverse. The buses can get full in the evenings but typically enough people get off to allow everyone to get on who's waiting. There was a time that it took around 40 minutes to get from Maya palace to Maya beach because of the time it took to unload, load, and if you have a driver who waits a few minutes in case someone shows up last time. So keep that in mind if you plan on using the bus to get to a reserved dinner. Transfers from hotel: we used AGI transfers (to accommodate our large party) and USA transfers (for our smaller party) and had good experiences with both. Overall: I considered giving this 4 stars because of the towel situation this year and check in still taking so much time but don't feel it's warranted just because of those two issues that frustrated me and overall having a 5 star experience. The food, the hotel itself, the grounds, the hardworking staff, the amount of things for us to do on the resort itself, warranted a 5 star experience for us but the towel thing was a big issue for me this year but hopefully was just an isolated incident for that week and they find a system that remedies that issue and then check in and check out can definitely leave you a little frustrated bc it can take some time. So it doesn't set the stage up well when you're frustrated not too long after getting in and frustrated waiting to check out and your vehicle is ready to go. But overall my family had a fantastic time and would definitely come back.

“Nice resort, poor service and food”

We were on a Sr trip with 6 18 yr old boys and 5 families. Our first experience at the resort was not a stellar one. We waited nearly 1.5 hrs to get checked in. Girls at the fron t desk did not even appear to know we were coming as a group. They did not ask all the correct questions nor did they provide much information. Once we got to the room, we found the room to be very nice. Large and spacious with a pull out couch. One thing about the room, if you like you room colder than 20 C, you need to call the front desk so they can adjust. The main pool was good. The adult pool was good. Once thing I would note is the bar tenders even with a $20 tip were not attentive nor highly responsive. I eventually quit tipping due to this. The beach area is nice. Family of sea turtle roam out front which was cool. Bring a banana or mango and they will swim right up to you. Very cool experience. Ammenities were nice. Massage on the beach was much needed and very good. The spa and fitness room were very nice. The casino is small but very effective. Boys had a blast here as well as Jaguars and the FlowRide. The French place was the best food by far. The others were ok. Buffets are typical. Cold food and same thing most every day. All in all, we have found better places in Mexico for our family, but for a large group is was ok.
