“A great hotel with great service-Occidental Nuevo Vallarta”

Enjoyed my stay at this hotel, lovely, friendly staff throughout, never too busy to have a chat or advise. My room was excellent with a kingsize bed and mini fridge which as replenished daily when the maid serviced the room. Has 3 unique restaurants Italian,Japanese and Mexican as well as the main Buffet. Entertainment every evening,my only criticism is that the entertainment ran for one week then was repeated so for my 2 week holiday I wasn't interested in the entertainment the 2nd week as saw the shows the previous week plus more variety of shows other than dancing would vary the entertainment? Took several excursions recommended by staff including Rhythms of the Night and Hidden Mexico, both were excellent. On the whole this holiday has been great, thanks to the staff at Occidental.

    “Wonderful Staff”

This was our first visit to this hotel but not our first to Nuevo. I will break it down like this: The good: - Amazing staff – regardless of whether it’s wait staff, animation staff, or maids. Awesome folks! Location – walking distance to Paradise Plaza and ATM bus if you don’t want to take a taxi. The bus takes you to Walmart across from the marina for 18 pesos. From there you can take a bus anywhere. If you take a taxi, always ask the reception how much you should pay. Find out before you get into the taxi. - Beach is beautiful. Sunsets are amazing. Ocean nice and warm. Now for the not so good: - Over our 13 day stay we had to listen to 5 parties which lasted until midnight or longer. Walls are paper thin so bring earplugs if you want to sleep before midnight. No joke. - When furniture is moved it loudly screeches and scrapes on the floor. The hotel would be well advised to invest in some felt pads. - If some inconsiderate jerks want to party on the beach well into the morning hours, the hotel is helpless because the beaches are public - Construction on the hotel grounds has been ongoing for 4 years, I was told. Right now, the hotel is in the process of creating more room for lounging sun beds for the Royal Club level guests. Not for the average vacationer or the next level of First Club, but the Royal Club. The Royal Club members also have an exclusive pool and bar. There is a premium to pay if you want access to the beds, pool, or the bar. Incidentally, Wi-Fi is also included for the Royal Club but everyone else has to pay. - Wi-Fi is available but at a cost (unless you’re part of Royal Club). Or, you can go across the street, get a coffee at Starbucks and access Wi-Fi. - During our stay we were treated to jack hammers and concrete cutting for a few days. During these days, the jack hammering lasted ALL DAY! Before we booked there, we were informed that there was construction so we expected some related noise but nothing like what we experienced. - For a while, we had a view of the ocean from the adult pool but then, the construction crew expanded their work area and completely blocked it. - There are two pools, one adult and one children’s pool. At least that is the way it was intended. Is it really that much to ask to keep the adult pool strictly an adult pool? Kids jump off the edge of the pool, yell, splash, etc….and no one really says anything…..because they’re kids. What about the folks that are past child rearing stage…. - Peace and quiet?? Not here. If you are looking for a livelier hotel then this is the place for you, but if you are looking to get away to get some rest and relaxation, a quiet corner to read a book or just enjoy the ocean waves lapping at the beach, forget it! You can hear the construction from the beach, and, or, the music played loudly to COVER the construction noise. - We asked to be moved to another room and the hotel obliged. Didn’t help. Because the walls are so paper thin the only solution is ear plugs if you don’t want to have to endure wedding parties or be subjected to music coming from the lobby bar. Quiet time is 11 pm UNLESS the wedding party has some type of special permission or arrangement then it lasts until whenever, in this case it was 1 am. - There are no palapas on the beach just palm trees. As beautiful as they are, they do not provide sufficient shade so you have to move your chair if you want to stay in the shade…Not a big deal but a bit of a pain if you happen to fall asleep in the shade and wake up in the full sun. Yes I know – this is Mexico and it’s warm and sunny but sometimes a little of shade is nice. Overall, I have to say the best thing about the hotel is the staff. They are absolutely amazing and they always do their best to accommodate and ensure you have a pleasant stay.

    “Nice three day visit”

My husband and I stayed at the Occidental for three nights in October. It was a last minute great find on hotels.com. We are seasoned resort travellers and have been all over the world. This resort was cozy and had a small feel so if that is what you are after this would be a great destination. If you are going as a large group and want enough to keep everyone busy, many food choices and a la carte's, multiple pools, and like walking large resorts, etc than perhaps this may not be for you. (There is no shuttle service at this resort as not needed) The buffet was good and always had enough for us to choose from as we are not picky nor fine diners. We only did one a la carte and that was the Italian restaurant. The service was great and the meal was very good. I liked that unlike some destinations in the Caribbean it tasted like unique stand alone food and not buffet food carted over to the restaurant. Erik in the buffet was a wonderful man who always called us over when he spotted us enter. He pulled chairs out, ran to help carry plates and generally got what we needed and was super friendly. Thanks Erik! His brother Samuel was also very kind and helpful. There was pop and beer and a few bags of snack food in the fridge left daily that was included. The rooms were clean and nice, although a wee bit tired in spots. The bathroom had a bit of a humming noise and there was something strange going on with the electrical as our lights would flicker randomly. It was not enough to be too bothersome and we chalked it up to the many reno's going on around the resort. The shower was high pressure and amazing which for me always makes for a good stay :) The main area of the resort that could use a bit of upgrading is the lobby and the lobby bar area. Also, there seemed to be only two desks that looked after check in and check outs or guest issues and questions, so I did find there was a bit of wait the couple times we needed to use. Also, everyone was very friendly in the resort except for the front desk staff. This is unfortunate as they are the first people you generally deal with when arriving at a resort and can often make that first impression a good or not so good one. The entertainment team did a great job during the day getting people active and involved and the two shows we went to in the evening were fun and nice entertainment. My only wee bit of advice for the the entertainment team and to advise parents up front is that the choice of music played around the pool during the day was a tad inapproprite for anyone with young kids or who does not like the type of music played. I am not a prude by any means and listen to my share of Eminem but even I would have liked to have heard more mainstream pop music or something with a Mexican or salsa feel when I am around a resort pool. The music they played had full out negative lyrics and cuss words which in that environment is not cool. I heard this for the two days I sat around the pool but perhaps this is due to someone on duty that day and is not the norm, no idea. We did not upgrade the higher level as we are not big enough drinkers to justify paying for the premium alcohol nor did we need a second pool to use. Would have been nice for the pool so have swim up bars but there was great service around the pool and always someone ready to get you a drink if needed. There was construction going on at the pool and the entire back end of the resort which did make for some noise as big machinery was being used but nothing that would ruin a stay. The beach was nice and clean and seemed to be plenty of chairs for guests. We went during off season so resort was fairly quiet so not sure how it operates in peak seasons. We had spent a week in Nuevo Vallarta elsewhere the week before our stay at the Occidental and did find that it was easy to grab bussing into Puerto Vallarta. Local buses stop nearby the front of the resort so ask someone and they can assist you. Enjoy your stay!

This is only our third Occidental property that we have visited. It is not as nice as the first two. Aruba and Excaret were our previous ones. Nuevo location is still nice though. It was having some outside renovations happening while were there which was distracting noise wise. All in all a nice property.

    “Strandurlaub”
