    “Terrible hotel”

They do not give you what you pay for. Terrible check-in process, second occasion that this happens. We booked the room through their website, and before payment they offer what type of room you want, we choose a king bed room because we have a baby. When we arrived we had to wait to hours for them to locate a right room.

“Nice, clean resort with lots going for it.”

Overall we had a wonderful time. The resort was exactly what we wanted. Great location, great beach, friendly staff and bartenders. Rooms were nice and the beds were comfortable. The nightly entertainment was very good. Grounds were kept very clean. No complaints about the food.

“I would highly recommend this hotel. It is probably the best for the price.”

This is going to be a long review for anybody who is considering this hotel and also for the hotel to make any changes as they see fit. First thing - We are extremely happy with our experience at Occidental Nuevo Vallarta - Barcelo. And yes, this IS a Barcelo Hotel. They were bought some years ago, and they made A LOT of changes to the hotel in order to be within Barcelo standards. We have stayed at other Barcelo hotels, and this one is of the same caliber as the other ones. We felt like - for the price we pay - this hotel exceeded our expectations. Now, that doesn't mean everything is perfect, which is why I am writing this review. 1) Front desk: unfortunately, they are ALWAYS busy, and it normally takes a while for you to be able to speak to one of them (there are just 2 of them, and one taking reservations for other services like restaurants etc). But once you sit with them, they are professional and helpful. We felt like "Yuney" was the person with more experience, who helped us the most. If you can choose, I would go with him. 2) Rooms. Good size, comfy beds and all the things you would expect. The people who clean the rooms are very nice and do an excellent job. They also will refill the fridge with your favorite beverages for free - a huge plus! Like some people already noticed it - ocean view can be "semi-ocean view", and may not be worth your money. Some other things we didn't like: There are no baths - just a shower, but what we probably dislike the most (out of everything in the hotel): The thermostat is not really a thermostat, but an "off/on" AC switch. You can choose low or high speed, but since the thermostat doesn't really work (not just our room but the other 2 rooms we booked), then we had to constantly get up during the night to turn it off (when we were getting too cold), and hot (when we were getting too hot). That made our room experience one of the worst ones. 3) Noise. We have been at other hotels where the music is SUPER loud at ALL times - super annoying. This hotel is much better. Yes, they have "loud" music sometimes during the day (whenever they have their zumba or dance classes), but it is not bad at all. You can really relax. Having said that, at night - depending on where your room is, it can be noisy. If you go to bed after 11 pm, you shouldn't have any problems, but if you have small kids, then please note that you may be hearing loud music until 10-11 -pm from some special events at the hotel AND from the Hard rock hotel next door (if your room is on that side of the hotel). 4) Facilities. Top-notch facilities. The gym is gorgeous with new machines, the pool is great, they have a game room and has many things to do. They also have a kids club which we loved. They also have a basketball court and a separate tennis court which we enjoyed a lot. Downside: They don't have a hot-tub (unless you buy the special package which - for us - was too expensive for the benefits they offer. 5) Location. The location is perfect. You can walk (5 minutes) into a shopping center where you can find Starbucks, yogurt place, laundry mat service (which we took full advantage of), grocery store, etc. The beach is in excellent location as well. You can walk for miles at the beach, and the scenery is absolutely beautiful. The sunset at that beach is breathtaking. 6) Entertainment. There are a lot of choices, and when you arrive, they will give you a schedule of all the events going on: Yoga, dance classes, beach volleyball/soccer, pool exercise, bicycle etc etc. At night, they always have a show going on. Now, don't expect a circus solei or anything similar, but for a hotel, we thought it was pretty good. We have been at other hotels that we thought "why even bother putting together this stinky show like this - my kids can do better lol", but it was not the case here. Again - don't expect universal studios caliber, but it will "entertain" you. There are some shows that are not that great, so you will have to see for yourself. We personally LOVED the Michael Jackson show - that was by far our favorite. But our favorite part of the whole entertainment and hotel experience was the Kids Club. I don't know what we would have done without it. The person in charge was Alexandra, and you can tell that she enjoyed working there and being around kids. She was always so welcoming and our daughter loved being around her. She was always going the extra mile. Thank you Alexandra! 7) Food. We were very happy with the restaurants in general. The food quality is very good. Of course, that doesn't mean EVERYTHING is top notch, you will still find some things that won't impress you at all, but in general, we enjoyed all the food. At night, you can make reservations to 3 restaurants: Japanese, Italian and Mexican. In our opinion, the Japanese was the best of them all without a doubt - from food quality to service. They were fast and efficient, and the food was delicious. The Italian and Mexican were good as far as quality, but the service was the slowest I have ever experience. It didn't seem like they were very organized. On one occasion it took almost 1 1/2 hours for us to get our meals. It took forever for them to take our order. very bad experience. The buffets are pretty good, but our favorite was the breakfast buffet. We were wishing they would keep the "breakfast buffet" 24 hours. And what I personally liked the most was their juice bar... it is kind of hidden, so I didn't discover it until the last few days we were at the hotel, but man oh man... those juice creations were delicious! The downside is that there is a 30-minute window ( I think between 6 pm and 6:30 pm) when there is no restaurant open, which happens to be our baby's time to eat dinner before going to bed. But for most people, this shouldn't be a problem. Also, most servers are good, but we felt like some of them were annoyed that we were always asking for a high-chair for our baby. Like I mentioned, the food quality is pretty good, but I cannot say that about drinks. As far as wines, they just have one option for each category (merlot, cabernet, etc.), and they are one of the worst I have ever drink in my life. I am not a beer guy, but I heard they also don't have a lot of options. And finally, I just wish they could do orange juice from squeezed oranges like other hotels but I guess you can't have everything. 8) Spa. We tried the couples massage. It is not deep tissue, but we enjoyed it a lot. So much that we came back again for a second couples massage... but we didn't like the second that much. I guess not all massage ladies are equal. I wish I could remember names, but I don't. Sorry. :( 9) Guys in front of the hotel (parking etc.). We took a shuttle, so we don't know how the parking works, but we were able to talk to them and ask them about going downtown and other places, and they were awesome. They gave us a lot of information and made the reservations for us (taxis etc.). Conclusion: This is a great hotel and I would recommend it to anybody. No, it is not perfect and they have a lot of things to improve, but for the price, it would be hard to find a better hotel.

    “A frustrating trip”

My husband and I visited this resort this last week with our 14 month old son. We have been to Puerto Vallarta many times, and were quite disappointed in this experience. We almost always stay at all-inclusive properties and have stayed at Barceló resorts before and had great experiences at each. We were booked in an ocean view room and got a really good rate. Upon arrival we were disappointed in the small room and the 2 beds we got. There wasn’t much room for a crib in the room and the ocean view was more what I’d call a Partial Ocean View (barely a view at all). Most rooms do not have a balcony. And while it is our fault for booking that and knowing it, we ended up missing a balcony a lot more than we expected, especially with a baby that goes to bed early. We asked to move rooms to something with one bed and were told there was nothing available. We ate at the buffet for dinner and found it pretty poor, compared to other properties we’d stayed at. The next morning at the buffet our waiter was nowhere to be found. We waited a half hour for drinks and a high chair until I finally flagged a hostess down to help us. At that point we were annoyed so my husband decided to pay extra to join the Royal level and upgrade our room and our experience. Honestly I wouldn’t even consider visiting this resort without doing the Royal level. It gets you access to your own private pool and beach beds, better rooms on higher floors and your own restaurant on the top floor with nice views so you can avoid the main buffet. You also get access to only a la carte restaurants and get premium booze. Our new room had the king bed but the view wasn’t any better. We moved to the other side of the hotel. It actually ended up being terrible because we were right above the theater which is insanely loud from 8:30-10pm each night. If you have kids that sleep before 10, make sure and request to be away from the theater! Our bed was terrible. Mexican beds are always hard but this left my hips sore and I couldn’t sleep a whole night because I was in so much pain. So overall, the pros and cons... Pros: Resort size is great Beautiful beach in front of property Tons of loungers Never really felt busy Impeccable service by the royal level pool and restaurant. Waiters Julio, Agustin, Pewe, Lupe, Fernando and Moriela knew us by name and were amazing. Access to Royal level restaurant and pool was totally worth it. Resort felt very clean All a la carte meals were good Family friendly Cons: Ocean view is pretty pathetic Breakfast and dinner buffets were not good Waited over an hour for food multiple times. Once a waiter told us the chef was just in the back talking. Terrible experience with Royal level concierge who couldn’t do anything but book dinners at the a la carte. The noise at night was really bad. When we asked to be moved we saw there was already a huge list of customers asking to be moved ahead of us so we never were moved We had free WiFi but had to go back for new passwords 3 times Front desk staff was unfriendly and unhelpful. My husband stepped on an earring in a beachfront shower and punctured his foot. The staff seemed put out to help him with a bandaid and antiseptic. They were not apologetic or concerned. No bathtub in the room which made bathing my son difficult. Main pool turned green for 2 days and stayed open. I was grateful for access to another pool because I wouldn’t get in there! ATM was out of order for part of the trip but once it was up, it was a $10 usd fee to use. (Go across the street to the mall) All in all I feel like there are better resorts for the money. I would not go back to this place.

    “Strandurlaub”
