    “A wonderful hotel ”

    Part of Caravan Tours, this mainstay hotel was surprisingly modern. About half the staff seemed to know English making it easier to ask questions. There is a long lobby and upper mezzanine conference center bordered by large buffet style restaurant on one end and a large swimming pool with a lazy river connection to a smaller wading pool on the other end. One problem was during rainy season, no one was swimming. Staff was courteous and helpful. Our room was modern, clean and with a safe and individual air conditioning. There is a gym, sauna, hot tub jacuzzi, and gym equipment with an attendant. There is a beautiful garden behind the hotel. For the price, five stars.

    “A lovely stay in San Jose!”

    I saw a lot of mixed reviews for the Barcelo San Jose, but a lot of the negative reviews were complaining over some small thing (like airport transferal) that went wrong and that is not indicative of the hotel as a whole. I am not someone who normally stays in super high-end fancy hotels in the States, but I decided to splash out for a birthday vacation in San Jose with the Barcelo with a Premium level room and was NOT disappointed. First of all, everyone spoke near to fluent English, when honestly, I wouldn't have expected that. Their customer service from the doorman to the waiters was fantastic! So nice and accommodating! They have 3 delicious restaurants (one pool-side!), speedy and cheap room service and a bar to choose from as well as a well-stocked gift shop, spa, gym and salon services. I was going to partake in a spa service, but sadly a bad sunburn stopped that before I could get there. As being a Premium level guest, there was a snack bar available to us during the day. Also, they have really pretty bad garden area that was very nice and secluded to walk through. I didn't see it mentioned, but I really liked it! This might not be considered a five-star hotel by some, but I liked it very much! My only con to this hotel is that it truly is not close to the city center or walkable from anywhere. I live in New York City and do not mind walking, but the hotel is surrounded by highways with no sidewalks. So if you want to leave, you have to take a taxi (taxis are very cheap, however!). This wasn't a huge deal breaker by any means. San Jose isn't the most exciting city and we had day trip excursions booked for most of the trip. All in all, if I were coming back to San Jose, I would absolutely stay here again!

    “Great hotel”

    Airport pick up is good , and if you don’t want to leave the hotel there’s music in the hotel , football ground is close which I used and of your looking to go up to shops and bars only $8 in taxi from outside the hotel , enjoyed my stay 👍

    “Might have been a four star hotel once”

    We stayed at this hotel for one night before returning to the USA after a week vacation in Costa Rica. Not that I’m complaining, but the rating of this hotel is inaccurate. The lobby, bar, and Japanese restaurant were very nice, but the paint on the walls in the room were marked up, scratched and generally shabby. The lamp on the table had duct tape wrapped around the wiring after some repair, a potential fire hazard, and the shower had no cold water so my shower was scalding hot. At dinner, the waiter forgot to order my rack of lamb for me and then denied that I had ordered it from him, although he did remember to bring my soup. Overall, not a terrible experience, but certainly not 4 stars. 3 at best.

    “Nice But Not Near Anything”

    We enjoyed the Barcelo San Jose two nights prior to joining a Caravan tour. The hotel is very nice but not near downtown or anything else interesting. The food at the buffet was very good and plentiful.

    “Nice But Not Near Anything”
