“A hotel that is slowly but surely falling apart”

I recently travelled to Varadero with several family members. We stayed at the Barceló Solymar. The hotel is falling apart. It's not clean The sliding balcony door in our room didn't move. We didn't have water one day. The electrical outlets were coming out of the walls. In my son's room water was leaking from the ceiling. As far as service; the amenities you were to get daily were hit or miss. Some days you got towels, bottled water etc. other days you did not. Same for the beach towels. The food was tasty but at best lukewarm and sometimes stone cold. The hotel seems to cater to the younger university crowd. If you are looking for a week surrounded by drunk young adults who party to 3; this is the place for you. Anyone else should stay away.

    “January 2017”

Returned from Barcelona Solymar in February. Second time at this resort. Check in was quick for Cuban standards, staff friendly and accommodating to get us in our room earlier than normal and adjacent to our friends room. The hotel definitely needs some maintenance. One bank of elevators were down at times. Our main issue was the shower. The doors were falling off, and dirty. They should just add curtains. Our safe worked but our friends had issues for several days, luckily they were able to share ours. Their bath tub was chipped and grimy.. Small repairs would work wonders. Quite a walk to the beach...and no bathroom facilities at the beach...so we decided to try to upgrade to a Bungalow. We visited a couple of different types and decided we would stay in our room. After a couple of days we found a bathroom closer to beach in the Seafood Restaurant between Arenas Blancas (sister resort) and our resort. Very busy so needed to get to beach early if we wanted shade areas. Water was beautiful. 2 days were quite windy, one day no swimming allowed. We never went to the pool. New International Hotel being rebuilt beside Solymar so it was noisy on that side. No view! Saw two other new resorts, this area really building up, getting ready for the USA! Food was normal fare, this was my 8th time in Varadero and I would say the variety of food is improving. We still pack little things like spices, salad dressings, etc. Broke down and bought a can of Pringles in the gift shop. 6 PESOS. They have an exchange counter at hotel, the Sunwing rep told us it was higher than Bank or currency bldg in between resorts. ( We never did see that place) they do not accept American money but yet their exchange is based on US dollar!! A la cartes were iffy. We didn't hear good reviews about Italian so we stayed away, the Spanish was not great, the Mexican was good, the Asian was fair. Some of group went on double decker bus. It does not go all the way to Playa Caleta now, turns raround after town. Girls said the pina coladas served on the bus were delicious. Bus stops at new Marina as well. Wifi was available in the lobby. Price has gone down for an hour card to $2.00. Service was spotty. Spent a few evenings in lobby bar, with great bar service. You can walk from Solymar, thru Blancas to downtown. We went to the Beatles Bar twice. Great time, lots of 80's classic music. Busy spot, get there before 9 to get a good seat. One evening we went to the outdoor bar at Blancas, it was nice to sit outside and socialize. Met nice Canadians, but also was embarrassed by some rude Quebecers. Some very pushy and not considerate to employees or other guests. Maid service was good, and they were around bright and early everyday to refill our fridge..with beer, water and soft drinks. A tip now and then goes a long ways. I left trinkets for the maid. We did have some tiny bugs in our room. Take bug spray. I always get bug bites, which swell and are very itchy. Take lotion, spray and Benedryl with you, just to be prepared. Some people are not bothered at all. You will also never a converter for the room. Overall a fun trip with great girls....a few hiccups, but we do love Varadero, the people, and beaches.

Dear KathyBCanada, Thank you for taking the time to write your review here on tripadvisor your comments and feedback are very important to us. Thank you very much for your comments about the staff, they do work very hard to make our guests feel very welcome here. I would like to clarify our rooms and categories order, at Solymar: - Bungalow - Standard room - Ocean View room - Junior Suite Bungalow - Suite Room So, if you are in a standard room at Solymar and you want to change to bungalow - you don´t need to pay extra cost. Really, it´s not consider "upgrade". It´s different if you want to change from your standard room to junior suite bungalow. I am very worried about the issues of the room that you have commented and I will follow up on your review with my team in order to remedy these shortcomings. We get to work to prevent other travelers can have the same perception that you. We would like to tell you that we work every day to maintain a spirit of teamwork and always give a close treatment to our passionate travelers. We take very good note about the areas of improvement that you propose. Thank you for the time spent to send us your comments time and hope to see you again next year. “Beautiful Beaches x Amazing Service x Great Atmosphere”

I have been to Barcelo Solymar Arenas Blancas three times in the past four years - and heading there in about a month with a group of friends! You'll have access to two resorts when you stay at Barcelo - both Solymar and Arenas Blancas! Tons of Canadians at both resorts! Tons of things to do! One of the beautiful things about Barcelo Solymar/Arenas Blancas are the beaches! A world-class beach with white sand and shades of clear blue water! The resort is beautifully located - steps from 'Downtown' Varadero, bus stops (get the all-day pass, cheap and you can tour the entire city in a few hours) and Nightlife (Havana Club, Calle 62, etc.) The city is very safe! We go out every night - usually one of Havana Club, Calle 62, The Cave (La Cueva del Pirata), Mambo Club and a few others! No fights, cheap drinks (about 1-3 CUC per drink). Always a good time! Definitely a must-try if you go to Varadero! The Staff at Barcelo are incredible - all-day, all-night helping tourists on their vacation! For the price we pay as tourists, I'm appreciative of their service. Karen, Betsy and Lala are amazing bartenders at the Pool bar (Solymar) - always smiling and helpful! Hope to see you guys again in a month! The Food - everyone always complains about the food; it's not that bad! So much variety, and so many food stations! Most meats are fresh - grilled in front of you! Fresh Fish and Shrimp served daily! If anything, bring sauces - hot sauce, BBQ to enhance your flavors! Try the a La Cartes - book them on your first or second night with the Front Desk! Most of them have Signature/Special Dishes that are included in your package! Nice to sit down with your loved ones - in a romantic, calmer setting! The main Buffet areas are busier - meaning a bit louder; a la cartes are booked, so less people and much more relaxing to eat! Rooms were always cleaned; in-room fridge were always stocked. Maids are amazing! They work so hard to see us happy! I am very thankful to everyone who has helped me at Barcelo. Juan Marques runs a great team at Barcelo! To All Staff: Thank you all for being so positive and caring! I've been to Barcelo with a group of guys and again, with my fiancee - each time was amazing! I'm a positive person who loves meeting new people - this resort caters to all tastes and ages! A lot of young people who love to party and young families! At times, loud - but bearable! Have an open mind... My only real complaint would be the WiFi/Internet- not very good. But that can be fixed in time! Buy an Internet card at the Front Desk. There are also a few computer stations you can use with your Internet card! WiFi wasn't that good - but it's actually nice to be detached from the Social-world! Some tips: (i) exchange your money at the airport; before your board your bus to the resort, there is small Cadeca after you collect your baggage! Better rates than the city/resort! (ii) Book tours with your tour provider (for example, SunWing) - they have a variety of trips - go to the information session! We paid with our Canadian Credit Card for the tours at the resort! (iii) Staff are not tip hungry; they don't ask for tips. I always tip only because I am very grateful and appreciative of their service! Super excited for my next trip to Varadero! Excited to see the familiar faces at Barcelo! See you in about a month...

“Great vacation at the Barcelo Arenas Blancas”

We stayed at the Arenas Blancas Resort Feb 12th-16th. Airport transfer was smooth and relatively quick, 25 mins or so. Upon arrival the resort grounds looked nice but the exterior could use a coat of paint. I understand the resort is doing renovations to some areas so the exterior could be one of the areas. Check in was quick and we were given a top floor room in the center of the resort. When we opened the door we were pleasantly surprised at the remodelled and very spacious room. The views were amazing, full pool view, resort view and ocean view. Prior to our arrival I contacted the resort for special requests and they sure went over and above for us. The trip was our son's first all inclusive and it was his birthday so the resort booked a table for us at the Mexican restaurant. After dinner was done the waiter brought out a Birthday cake and the staff sang Happy Birthday. It was a special time and we sincerely appreciate the gesture. I would like to say THANK YOU to Yoleidys Diaz Griego for making all the arrangements for us. Great asset to the Barceló team. We spent a fair amount of time in the lobby bar as this was the only place you could access WIFI using the 1 hr cards. Each card costs $1.50 CUC so it does add up fast. Service in the lobby was ok at best, more often than not we seemed like more of an annoyance than paying guests. Tip or no tip, it did not seem to matter. The beach was absolutely amazing, powder white sand and crystal clear water as far as you could see. I had to go down very early to get a seat under a palapa due to people leaving their towels on the chairs to reserve them. Pretty rude when you save a seat and don't use it for the entire day. The beach staff are super friendly and clean off the chairs for you with a brush, nice touch. The beach waiter was also amazing, he worked the entire beach by himself so he didn't come around as often as we would have liked but he knew his workload and when we asked for 2 drinks he brought us 4. His tips were well deserved. We used the free peddle boats and kayaks on the beach. The water was so clear the boat was great to jump off way off shore. There is a snack bar and lunch buffet just off the beach with amazing sea views. If you like chicken you will love this place. Rotissorie chickens were some of the best we have ever eaten and there were plenty to go around. The buffet had lots of selection and we always found something good to eat. No Ketchup for the burgers and fries so If this is something you need bring it with you. Wait staff was excellent but the service from the bartenders was poor. Do not worry about drinking the water in any restaurant, it is all purified. Just don't drink the tap water anywhere or you will have a crappy vacation. The main buffet was pretty good, lots of choices for pick eaters, lots of meats, fish, prawns, crab claws, buns, pasta, vegetables and cheeses. Made to order eggs were great for breakfast. For dinner we found Turkey, beef and ham and all were excellent. We had the option to eat at the Solymar but chose to stick to our side, we found all we needed on the Arenas side. To book a restaurant you have to do it at the Solymar side. We went for a steak and lobster dinner one night for returning guests and it was amazing, big lobster and the steak was superb. The pool was very big and clean but was lacking the pool bar as it was shut down for renovations. It is probably a month away from completion. The beach was so amazing that we spent most of our time there. We went on the double decker bus tour which cost $5 CUC each, money well spent and you can ride it over and over again the same day. We booked the jeep safari on the airplane and it turned out to be an amazing excursion. $100 each and it was a full 11 hour day of fun in the sun. We drove our own jeep for about 3 hours off and on, went snorkelling, swam in an underground cave, went to a farm and had an authentic Cuban lunch and went for a boat ride. The day was filled and you had the option to play with the animals, ride horses or whatever else you chose to do. This trip was a real eye opener, we drove through a small town and the poverty was widespread. Truly heartbreaking but all part of the experience. Cuban people are so wonderful and due their best with what they have. We went to the Havana Club Rum factory to buy our alcohol to bring home, 1 ltr of white rum $5.20 CUC and aged dark rum $6.95 CUC. If you smoke the cigarettes are super cheap in there too. I saw some for .40 cents a pack. Our intention was to have a family trip together but we met a great guy (Sam) and his 2 daughters from Toronto and spent a few days relaxing with them, it was great to have someone else for our boy to hang out with. At the end of the trip we exchanged contact info and the kids are still talking. Go Jays! My biggest complaint was the amount of people smoking, you can smoke everywhere and the lobby was in a haze every day all day. It wasn't as bad on the beach because of the breeze. Overall we had a great vacation and will definitely be back. This is a place rich with history and wonderful people. Super safe to go out and explore, lots of shops, restaurants and beautiful scenery everywhere you look. .

Dear wickedduo, Thank you for posting your positive comment about our hotel on Tripadvisor community. We are pleased that enjoyed your stay in our hotel, thank you for kind comments: "Great vacation at the Barceló Arenas Blancas". We are sorry about the Non-Smoking experience you comment, until now we haven’t received any comment of customers smoking in not allowed areas, but know that we will stay abreast of that and take actions. In the lobby of Arenas Blancas, there is an area in front of the reception where smoking is not allowed. In any case, we will put more attention to these areas in order to comply with this restriction. Thank you very much for your compliments on our staff (special mention: Yoleidys Diaz ), have certainly passed your remarks onto them. Our only achievement and triumph here at Barceló Solymar Arenas Blancas Resort is to fully satisfy our guest and make memorable experience. My team and I thank you once again for your great comments and I personally look forward to welcoming you back the next time you visit Varadero. Best regards, Juan Marqués General Manager

“Nice resort with lots to do”

Nice Hotel with plenty to do! My wife and I wend to Barceló Solimar January 19 to January 26. We were flying with Sunwing and after numerous times flying with Sunwing this year Sunwing was on time. Check in in Ottawa as well as emigration in Varadero was flawless, fast and professional. WE landed in Varadero at 10.00 HRS. and arrived at the resort at 12.30 HRS. Our room was ready by 15.00 HRS. The room was clean spacious and everything in the room worked. The food in Solimar is better then in most resorts in Veradero. My wife has allergies so we only used the buffed restaurant for our meals. Food is plenty full with various outlets and locations. Bar service is also offered in various locations. The beach as all along in Varadero is a dream with white sand and shallow water that gradually goes deeper. Even non swimmers can enjoy the ocean and have fun. Plenty of palabra’s and beach chairs were available. There was never a shortage during our stay. Entertainment goes on all day for those who chose to participate. In the evening a band played for one hour and we could dance to Cuban music. The show starts late and we only watched twice. All shows in Varadero are performed by professional people who visit the hotels on a one week schedule. For those who chose to watch it is really worth while. For older people the show is too late in the evening. One small drawback to mention. There are two hotels Barceló Solimar and Arenas Blanca. Solimar is more expensive then Arenas Blanca. Guests from Arenas Blanca are allowed to use all the facilities at Solimar. Many guests pay for Arenas Blanca and then spend all their time in Solimar, including eating at the buffed. This makes the dinner hours quite busy and lineups happen frequently. In conclusion: The resort is a middle budget Hotel. I would recommend Solimar to anyone who enjoys the Cuban People, who are friendly, helpful and clean. In all our travels we have never seen people as the Cubans. Life in Cuba is hard, as compared to Canada. Therefor tips are a necessary sort of income and most Canadians are good tippers. We will be back.
