Occidental Arenas Blancas reviewed by juliaY2199SZ on . Avoid at all costs if you aren't 19 and looking to be so drunk you don't know wha'ts going on I'll start with the only 2 redeeming things about this resort: 1) Variety of delicious drinks 2) The coffee The food was absolutely horrendous. I spent one night eating french friends for dinner... Rating: 1

    “mixed bag”

Booked for 4 night on the hotel website ad paid for an upgrade to a bungalow/Junior suite as there were 3 of us and after 10 days of small rooms in casas we wanted more space. Check-in is at 4pm and they stuck rigidly to it even though we arrived at 11.30. On the plus side we we4re able to store our bags and got our all-inclusive bracelets immediately. The biggest negative was our accommodation. Our bungalow was dreadful, air con could only be turned on or off from the fusebox - no power or temp control (and there was a strong musty smell whenever it was turned on). The downstairs kitchenette area had broken cupboards and warped surfaces. Condensation was dripping onto the floor. The shower door was a single when it should have been a double so water leaked all over plus the bathrooms and floors had not been well cleaned. We complained and were told to come back in the morning which we did and were offered a room in the hotel - they looked in better condition - or a slightly better bungalow. We took the bungalow for the space and followed up with Customer Services who eventually arranged a 20% refund. The good things My advice is that the staff are almost all really lovely and helpfully - especially housekeeping and gardening. There is a huge volume of food at the buffets - lots of fruit and salads - but not a huge variety day to day. There is no advice on check-in that you need to book the a la carte restaurants in advance. We booked the Mexican - not worth it - and the Spanish much nicer. The beach really is amazing, there are kayaks, pedalos and catamarans for use without charge. It's at least a kilometre long and the water is clean and turquoise. Amazing sunsets also. The pools could do with cleaning and refilling even just for aesthetics - bonus was the towel change service from 9-5 where you could change your beach towel for a fresh one whenever suited TV with Mexican/Russian and American channels (Starz and CNN).. Mini-fridge restocked every day with water free of charge - could do with some diet drinks as well as cola though. Had a massage, pretty good but missing the scented candles and softer touches form home. Lots of young Canadians there to party but quite well behaved. I would not recommend staying in a bungalow - they haven't really repaired them since the last hurricane but the hotel rooms we looked at were fine and a good 3-4 star quality (just need some updates). Overall I would recommend the resort - depending on price and booking a room in the hotel.

    “Friendly & professional”

For most part this hotel is very family oriented. Staff is friendly and professional. The only thing is the air conditioner in the room only had ome setting making the nights chilly in the room Overall great hotel to relax and tune out.

    “Staff just don’t care.”

My friend and I travelled here from May 5-12. We flew with air transat and paid an extra 280 per person to upgrade to the bungalow room. Our second night there the power was out for 8 hours in our room we changed in the dark and had to run across for dinner where We were turned away because we were wet, we explained to the gentleman that it is pouring outside and even if we changed we would be soaked again. We told him there are no covered walk ways from where the bungalows are to the main lobby. He did not care and did not want anyone wet in the dining area. We eventually had a mechanic come and resolve the power issue. On may 10 there was a giant storm which ended up flooding our room. We had water coming from the ceiling, the light fixtures, the safe area, every area had water coming into the room. Eventually our sewage line started bringing back up stuff. The smell in the room was disgusting and we had fecal matter start coming back up towards the sleeping area. Eventually again we were without electricity for and upwards of 8 hours. We went to the front lobby. Showed them the pictures and videos of the room and what was happening. They said give us your room number and we will do something when we get a chance. We went out for dinner. Came back and they didn’t do anything yet. We went back to the front lobby and told them we paid extra for the bungalow room but don’t care and are willing to go to a standard room just for sanitary reasons. She told us they are full and can’t do anything. That night we had to sleep in a room with fecal matter on the floor. The stench in there was unbearable and we had no electricity so it was stifling. We opened up the balcony door and got eaten alive by mosquitos as we tried to sleep. We woke up the next morning. Couldn’t brush our teeth because the area by the sink was the worse and I wouldn’t wanna brush my teeth in that anyways. We stayed out of our room all day and came back at 4 to find that they had finally cleaned it after 22 hours. I had the vending machine eat my money. I complained to the staff at the lobby. They took my room number down and told me to speak to guest services. The lady at guest services said it would be taken care of. I never got My money back and it was never taken care of. It was only 3 CUC but still. Clearly the staff here don’t give a damn about anyone or anything. The resort is plagued with 20 year old frat boys who drink too much and end up causing a ruckus or fights. I have been to Cuba before and understand the rooms can be quirky. One thing I loved about Cuba was the Cuban people and the Cuban hospitality. This resort is not known for either of the two things I am used to. I will never come to this resort again and I don’t recommend anyone in their 30’s and up to consider this as a destination. Save yourself the stress and hassle, pay for the iberostar instead.

“Fantastic Beach with Incredibly Poor Service & Facilities”

So I just recently went to Barcelo last week. Interestingly enough I have previously visited this resort 2 other times years before and things have completely changed. Pros: Incredible Beach - This was a real plus and probably the best beach I have ever visited. Clean with beautiful water its really stunning Bartenders - Nice and friendly Cons: Villa Rooms: There was so much that went wrong I honestly don't know where to start. We rented a Bungalow Suite for this trip and paid extra to do so A) Frequent Power Outages during the day B) No Air Conditioning. We requested multiple times for someone to come fix it but it never happened. C) Had a full day with no Water at all - No flush or Sink or Shower D) Shower had very low water pressure and was cold everyday E) Bathroom was dirty and glass cracked F) Found Cockroaches in the Bathroom G) One night I slept with Ants on the Bed who ate me alive H) Room was not stocked daily with Beer or Water Customer Service at Front Desk - Extremely Poor. It was like they had multiple complaints all day and were too tired to try and help anything. They only moved us out to a new Villa on the final Day. They seem flustered and angry. Party Staff & Activities - So I went to this resort 3 years ago and it was a great party place with tons of fun stuff. This time however they had ZERO entertainment staff, no Music through the day, no events or shows, They only have a Lobby Bar at night open until 11pm where then you have to go to the Club Disco for more drinks but it shuts down at Midnight where you have to then go to A Nightclub at another resort. It was like they were funneling everyone out of the resort to let them be someone else problem. They used to have a daily pool party but now nothing like that its very quiet by the pool. Overall I was extremely dissapointed and if it wasn't for the amazing beach I would give this zero stars for the amount we paid and what we expected based on previous experiences at the same resort. It was as if the Board of Governors cut all the funding for the resort in half.

    “Once was enough ”

Good day. I visited the hotel the last week of April and the first week of May, 2018. Coming there from Greece. Was terrible,guys.. Room was dirty when I got in. No towels no shampoos. Reception was ok. Restaurant was like I was invisible. None asked if I wanted water coffee/ wine or something. Pool area dirty. Never get in the water- full of plastic cups . Crazy loud music with wet floors and toilets extremely dirty. Beach is fine ( except the music contest young people have there. You can hear 4-5 different speakers around your umbrella - That has nothing to do with the hotel) Services in general were very low. I can not say I enjoyed it and had relaxed. No . I thought that - as on web is written - , would be great but I will never chose this hotel again , coming from so far .
