“Pristine beaches, beautiful rooms and delicious food!”

My mother, sister and I enjoyed a week's vacation at this resort. We were very pleased with our stay. The rooms were beautiful and clean. Our check-in went without a hitch...thank you, Pablo! The beaches are some of the best I've seen. They comb them every morning and they are well maintained. You do need to go down early in the morning to stake out your chairs but the sunrises are worth the effort! We tried a couple of the a la carte restaurants but frankly we went back to the buffet. They were ok, but the buffet was fabulous and there was always lots to choose from. If you do plan to do the a la carte restaurants, sign up the day you arrive or at least the next day as the time slots fill up quickly. The pools here are fantastic. There are so many and they are so big that you never feel like you are crowded. The night time entertainment was ok. We preferred the pre-shows over the actual main events. One suggestion for the hotel itself would be to add an entertainment schedule for the week in your check-in packet. We never knew what was on so a lot of nights we just didn't bother going down to check it out. The staff at the hotel were very helpful and work long, hard hours. The transat guy was less than helpful. He was your best friend during orientation but if you didn't book any trips off the resort with him, he no longer had any use for you. We went to find out the time of our pick up to the airport for our flight home and he didn't even look up from his book. He just said, "no trips? you know I don't make any commissions when you just stay on the resort." We explained that my father had just died and we were not up to any trips, we were just hear to rest. He didn't even look up from his book or respond. His co-worker seemed embarrassed and finally helped us out. So if you need something from Transat, skip Antonio and just look for his co-worker. He was very respectful and helpful. We stayed in building 26, room 202 and just want to say thank you for our room service. We only met briefly and so I don't have a name but she did an amazing job. Thank you! The beds were super comfortable and the linens were lovely. All in all, if you want a family friendly resort, I can't imagine being disappointed at this one. We would sure go back!

    “Beautiful trip ”

Spent 2 weeks here. Had a great time, good volleyball, good food, super service, except for breakfast at the Royal Club--if you want 1-3 cups of coffee forget-- you might get 1 cup before or with your food but don't expect to get the 2nd or 3rd cup even if you keep asking for more coffee. The Royal Club bar at the beach is great Carmen is a sweetheart!!

“First Club is a worthwhile upgrade.”

This is a nice resort. The facilities and grounds are well-kept. It was a pleasure to walk around the resort. The vast majority of our interactions with staff were very positive. We found the employees on-site to be friendly, helpful and genuinely dedicated to seeing that we were well taken care of. Overall ee felt we got good value for our money and would return. We upgraded to First Club and found the amenities added to our vacation experience. Firstly, we had an ocean view room with a hot tub on the balcony. We were in building 26 which has been renovated (and boasts an elevator). The First Club club house had a great breakfast served from 7:30 am. After we discovered the private setting we skipped the main buffet restaurant for breakfast for the week. There is also a dedicated, exclusive beach bar and roped-off beach area. We are not big drinkers, but all the spirits and wines were premium brands. The concierge was always there to answer our questions and made any and all the arrangements we needed straight forward. We both had satisfactory wi-fi for the week included. The food was always pretty good at the main buffet with enough variety to serve all tastes. We sampled three à la carte restaurants (steak house, Italian and Mexican); the decor was upscale, the service was fantastic and the food was a notch above. We enjoyed our visit to the spa. I had a massage and my wife had a mani / pedi. These were enjoyable and worth the price we paid. Do not buy your local rum (Brugale) to take home at the cigar shop on-site. They will say that it cannot be bought, or is more expensive, at the airport. Consequently, I paid $30 for a 750 ml bottle. Upon departure; I found that I could have bought it at the airport for $20, or a 1 litre bottle for $25. I'd like to have that $10 bucks back! The last word. The beach! Bavaro Beach is gorgeous. You can walk for miles. It is an unspoiled (given that there are many resorts) stretch of clean and soft white sand.

“Delicious food, lovely grounds, but still renovating”

Occidental Punta Cana has 5 theme a-la-carte restaurants, one large buffet plus a hamburger joint for lunch and a pizza or taco place for dinner. Hopefully you don't want to watch TV while in paradise. We had little English programming when it was working. There are also 2 large pools, one with a swim-up bar. Most guests we met were friendly. There are people from all corners of the world visiting. Breakfast buffet is quite a scramble (pun intended) as it is the only show in town (the own place available for breakfast). Busy as a beehive any time in the morning. Adequate beach/lounge chairs. Hamburger joint can be missed. Little selection. Burgers overdone, something resembling chicken nuggets. They do have ice milk for a warm day. Weather was nice and hot when it wasn't raining. Our rainiest vacation in the tropics ever! Also, 70% or more of the staff are new and most speak little other than Spanish. Staff mentioned, you're in a Spanish-speaking country, maybe YOU should speak Spanish. HMM!!! Telephone service doesn't work. Only able to contact the operator who, when they could understand you, needed to call everyone else for you. The entertainment we saw was bad. Same old stupid human tricks...brought to a new low.

“First time at Occidental. Very good overall experience”

Room check-in was 1.5 hrs late 4:30, which is long after a tiring day of travel. We get up to our room and housekeeping is still there. So wait another 10 mins. Not the start we were looking for! The room was very nice with no musty mildew smell that we usually have experienced at other Caribbean stays. The grounds are well maintained and the layout is great. The language barrier takes some getting used to but just be sure to keep things clear and simple. The service is slower but be patient. The buffet food was good, not great. The Italian dinner was awesome. The nightly entertainment was good. We especially liked the artists who played nightly in the bar by the reception area. In the theatre area, it was good when there were artists singing but I found the audience interaction games on stage not to my liking. But others seemed to like it. To each his own. Wonderful beach area with lots of chairs. Quite wavy but thst was fun for us. Volleyball was enjoyed by many and it was played a lot. The vendors on the beach were not pushy at all.
