    “Not family friendly”

For the amount of money we were spending, we really didn't think this hotel was worth it. The room seemed dark and outdated. We had lights out, the t.v.'s didn't always work, the bathroom had mold on the ceiling and the shower overflowed one day. And we were at the "premium" level. We did our best to call maintenance and have things fixed but because we don't speak fluent Spanish, we couldn't communicate our problems. The resort was not family friendly at all. I don't really think this is the fault of the resort necessarily but instead the type of clientele they attract. Whether we were in our room or down at the beach, the people were loud, crude, and obnoxious. In the room next to ours we seemed to have the frat boys who would go out onto the patio with their music blaring, drinking, smoking and screaming swears. The beach was the exact same thing. I've got two kids. I don't need them listening to the f-word every two seconds. I don't need people blowing their cigarette or cigar smoke in our face. I don't need to listen to their music either. Ever hear of headphones? What makes people think that the whole beach wants to listen to their music? We found ourselves keeping the patio doors closed or moving our beach chairs. But really, is that what I'm paying for? We were looking to relax for a week on the beach. It was not relaxing at all. The beach is beautiful. But like I said, you need to put up with the people on the beach. Some of the rooms looked nice, but ours was not. We tried changing rooms but there was nothing else available. The food was very foreign to us as they seem to cater to a much more global clientele. So we had trouble finding things to eat. Don't expect the hamburgers to be made of beef. The buffet gets boring when it's the only place to eat for breakfast and lunch and the menu items never change. Luckily we were at the premium level so at least dinner was at a sit down restaurant every night. Service was hit or miss. There were some wonderful people who worked very hard and were very friendly. But then we also encountered people who seemed very unhappy to be working there and didn't want to be bothered with you. The language barrier was a lot harder than I expected it to be. There were so many employees that spoke no English at all. I know I can't expect everyone to speak my language but it just made it challenging for us. And that takes away from the experience. This resort is great if you are looking to party and get drunk every day and night. If you want to unwind and spend some quality time with your kids, this is not the place for you.

“Premium is the way to go but check-in and pool areas are not so "Premium!"”

We just stayed here for a week and absolutely loved it. The trip was amazing - from the transport to the stay to the transport back to the airport. The people are lovely and the resort is spectacular. Food was excellent and service was beyond expectations. We found two things challenging - the hour long check in and no chairs at the pool. It seems like you would have the packets ready instead of having to pull one form, print one form, dig in the drawer for the wifi code, pull keys, sign another document, etc. Took about an hour and when we went back to the premium area for the booze and great snacks, we could hear other guests that were checking in had the same annoyance. The second thing is that there were hardly any chairs available at the pools. There are many pools, too. But, apparently guests go out early to save chairs. According to the pool concierge, there is nothing that can be done. SO, we would go to the pool at 11 and there would be a lot of open chairs but they had towels on them that meant that they were saved by guests earlier. One lady said that she saved 10 chairs about 5am that morning. She wasn't a premium guest either. So, we had to go to the beach where there is a lot of chairs. But, it seems like there should be no saving seats, or premium seating or a pool for premium guests only. We brought this to the attention of the pool concierge but she said there was nothing that she could do. So, that would be nice if there were more chairs or some sort of chair saving rules. Seems odd to say but we would have really liked to enjoy the pools and services at the pool.

Dear Guest, Thank you very much for having chosen as your holiday destination. We are glad that we were able to provide you a delightful stay and that you enjoyed our beach, our facilities; we strive to provide an excellent service and offer our guests the most memorable vacations, so we are glad of having achieved our goal! We regret to read that apparently we have not been able to ensure our own hotel policy, which prohibits the booking of chairs, was respected during your visit. Your opinion will not go unnoticed and we are pleased to inform you that, with immediate effect we will remind customers of the ban on our hotel reservation of unused chairs near the beach and pools. We are deeply sorry for this dissatisfaction during your visit to our property. I can assure you that this was never our intention, We hope welcome you and your family once again to our little paradise. We remain at your disposal. “amazing beaches! lots to do!”

the room was quite small and a bit humid; but with so much to do in this inclusive resort, you would only really need your room to sleep, as from sunrise to sunset there is a multitude of extravagant or relaxing things to do! the food was okay, not great, but there were many options. this resort is definitely for those who like to explore and experience new things.

“Nice break. Beautiful views. Hit or miss service. ”

We went with the premium level at the Barcelo because we knew the place would be busy for Spring Break. Unfortunately it didn't seem like the premium service bought much of anything except a separate check in area. The concierge couldn't get us dinner at any restaurant at any time other than 10:30 pm for any of the four nights we were there. It took a lot of extra complaining up to the manager to get anything decent in the way of dinner times. Not fun for a premium vacation. We had booked a family suite, but I guess they didn't have any, because we ended up with two adjoining rooms, which was fine. Probably our biggest gripe was that they would tell us that something was an upgrade or that they had taken care of a special reservation, when in fact they hadn't. It led to stressful waits at the entrance to the restaurants. However, the people were very nice for the most part. Language sometimes got in the way if you were asking for something out of the ordinary, but that is understandable given we are in a foreign country. The hotel was very clean and very comfortable. We slept very well and overall it was a wonderful relaxing getaway.

“Resort was nice, food was average or less, Most Staff didn't speak much English, Service was hit and miss”

We had high hopes for this vacation as we purchased a rather expensive premium package with a water front premium suite and all the amenities. The resort is nice, expansive, well appointed. We had the Premium Level Master Ocean Front Suite, it is expansive and beautiful. The Suite has a large balcony with a small hot tub. The staff is friendly, helpful and try really hard to please. Most servers don’t speak English btw. We were very disappointed by the food quality. When we checked in we asked what they recommended and made reservations at the very best premium restaurants. First night was the Le Comedie the French restaurant. We started with Shrimp Salad, the shrimp were large but they were warm, soft and tasteless. Next we had the Lobster Bisque, it was like nothing I have ever had before. It in no way resembled Lobster Bisque, it was more like a cold Bean Soup, no fish flavor what’s so ever. My wife then had the Lamb Chops, and I had the Thermador. Her comment was the Lamb was like old boot and my Themador was like small pieces of Lobster served in a Velveeta Cheese Sause packed back in a lobster shell. Ok, we had a bad night, but that was supposed to be the best. Next we tried the Koyoto Japanese, we were seated with our 8 new friends from Russia, we had the Surf and turf it was Ok. Although the way they cooked it the beef and the prawns tasted similar. The next night we tried the Coral, the fish house. No real fish choices it was steak or Lobster. I avoided the Bisque and tried the Clam Chowder, it was horrific, like a white pea soup with a clam floating in the center. My wife had a Lobster tail that had to be the smallest I have ever seen, mine marginally larger and was so well done it was dried out. We tried the steak house, not sure why but I thought you can’t screw up French onion soup right, wrong, it was blah. My wife ordered a Filet, they brought her the Surf and Turf oh well, their English isn’t too good, I had the Rib Eye it was ok. How can you screw up a basic steak. Chez Gourmet offered the best meal we had on our last night, the Chateaubriand was perfectly cooked. The other restaurants were below average or at best OK. The Buffets were marginal at best, although the Caribe seemed to be the best of the bunch. Monday my wife enrolled in the daily Yoga then found out they didn’t have any instructors and were cancelling the program for the balance of the week. She raised her disappointment to the Manager and suddenly the classes were reinstated. Good for them. Service of our room was hit and miss. Some days I had creamer for the coffee, some none, some days I had cold beer, some not, some days chips other not. Some days 3 towels some days 5 towels. I left tips daily to no avail. Who knew. The Hot Tub was broken most of the week, power switch would stick on or off and the thing leaked water all over. I am sure we soaked the people on the floor below. After five calls to the Maintenance office then finally stopped the leak, but the power switch required a hammer. Stay away from the Beach Shopping Center, selling same items available in the hotel gift shop for 5 times the price. They call them Beach Sharks for a reason. It’s really too bad, the resort is beautiful, the people friendly and they do seem to try hard. The beach is great. We will keep looking for the perfect location, Barceló needs a chef or at the very least a taster that is aware of what the food should taste like. They offered us a deal to come back, we passed. Btw I really question what you get for the extra cost of the premium level. A different check in, lounge with sweets and wrist band. Beyond that nothing I could tell when I compared notes with other guests. Same restaurants, same booze, same pools, same, same. Save yourself the money.
