    “Good Vacation at the Occidental Punta Cana”

    My husband and I stayed at the Occidental Punta Cana from Jan 31 to Feb 14. We had booked the deluxe room so we would get the First Club inclusions, which included a private beach bar and lounge with premium liquors and hot tub area. It was good because we could book the ala carte restaurants any time of the day at the First Club area. Our room was nice. We never had problems with having hot water for our showers, but there were sometimes during the day that there was no water pressure. Buffett was good and the ala carte restaurants were good, especially the Mexican. All the staff was excellent. Pool was nice, but couldn't sit at the swim up bar as there was a waterfall in front that kept pounding on your back. Being pestered to join the vacation club, timeshare was very annoying as the guys were very persistant and did not like to take no for an answer. Beach has very little shade as they had taken down all the palapas--just had palm trees. We walked the beach and Occidental was the only resort without palapas. Also the pool did not have enough shade. It only had a few pergola like sun shades, which you had to get up very early in the morning to save a spot. Some mornings by 6:30 - 7:00 am. As we were traveling with 2 other couples, we took turns saving seats. Even though we had a good vacation, we won't be returning because of very little shade at the beach and pool and also because of the persistant timeshare people.

    “Do not stay here”

    Check in is extremely slow. Once arriving to our room I realized the shower didn’t work. I immediately called and was told someone would be on their way to fix it. Half the day went by and no one came so I called again. This continued for 3 days. Everyday I spend at reception telling them again about my shower. Absolutely no water came out. I had pictures and videos to show it. Finally after the 3rd day of not showering I insisted I change rooms. They acted like this was a big ordeal. I never got an appallingly that no one had ever come by, I never got an apology that it was a huge inconvenience for my husband and I to repack all our stuff and then unpack it again. We couldn’t schedule anything for that day because to change rooms we had to be at reception with our bags at specifically 2:30. It was awful customer experience. Spend extra money and stay at Dreams. We had the most incredible time there.

    “First Club Member”

    This was my first return to Occidental Punta Cana after Barceló remodeled the Grand Flamenco PUJ. I have been a member for years and am impressed with the improvements to the property. It is a smaller resort with the softest sand in Punta Cana. Since Barceló took over there were very few employees remaining from previous years. I missed seeing all the familiar faces and thankful there were a handful of old friends still there. I really enjoyed the members party, the beautiful white lights around the palms and shrubs and festive magical feel walking around the property at night. The quality of the food was improved and I really enjoyed the restaurants at night. The buffet was nice with many options for breakfast, lunch and dinner. It is nice to have the optional lunch right by the beach but the choices there are limited. Must mention the Pizza and Taco bar at night and the wonderful entertainment especially the Michael Jackson show! There is a wonderful activities club including water sports sailing and scuba, tennis facilities and spa! This is not a 5 star resort but I love visiting here! They upgraded the walkways too which makes it easier for families with strollers or elderly needing smoother paths to walk on. Kudos to all the people working at Occ PUJ who make it so fun to visit!

    “Wont go back!!!!”

    We booked to go out of London airport and would highly recommend that instead of the stress of Toronto airport!!!! Air Transat offered a great package for 2 weeks and we were so excited to try a new resort with all the extra perks such as an ugrade to first club!! Unfortunately our excitement was short lived!!!! First they said at the desk they didnt have our reservation and then they finally found it but we had to go back to get our bracelets upgraded to the first club.We had paid the extra for the oceanfront room with the hot tub on the balcony and enjoyed that but would have been nice to have a blind or screen for when your using the hot tub!!! We put towels over the railing for privacy.The maids for the rooms are not the best so be forewarned!! If your not chasing them for the basic room ammenities ie coffee, sugar, creamers etc your chasing for towels or faceclothes. Same dirt was in the same spots for the 2 weeks we were there. The concierges at our building 26 were nice at first and very overbearing by the end of the 2 weeks. They are at you constantly to go to meetings!!!! We started coming in the back of our building so as not to run into them!!!! And no matter where your going these guys are chasing after you!!!! We talked to numerous people who have joined the Occidental Club and general census is their not happy with what they got for their money!!!! If your looking for a resort with shade, DO NOT GO HERE!!!!! Buffet is passable at best but we did have good service from Jacquelin Batia in the first club section. Really enjoyed the Mexican restaurant but disappointed they did not do the special coffees. Pool was okay and swim up bar was disappointing!!!!! Hard waterfall going and drinks would get full of water!!!! Shows dont start till 10 at night and as were early risers that doesnt work so well!!! People save chairs and dont come back for hours!!!!!! Beach was wide open to the sun, no shade anywhere to be had unless your in the royal club!!! We dont expect more than comfort, reasonable ammenities and to have a good time!! All of which were sadly lacking in this resort!!! We are not first time travellers and know what is available from other hotels!!!! We will not be returning!!!!!

    “February 3 - 10th vacation”

    Stayed at the First Club in a studio unit although I am a 1 bedroom owner. Not happy with this and spoke with my rep but nothing was done to resolve it. The rep never got back to me on this and subsequently I find out that other members were in the same boat.
