    “A nice hotel”

A nice hotel. But for those not used to staying in the downtown or central district of Santo Domingo, it could be a challenging experience. Traffic congestion, horns blowing throughout the day and a portion of the evening, could make it difficult for those unfamiliar with the culture. However, it was the hotel staff that made a positive difference with me. The help, assistance, and the friendliness of people such as Natasha in the premium club, Sheila in guest service, Henry and several others were a big plus during my stay there. For those interested in nightlife and getting around the city using commercial transportation, Oper Taxi was very reasonably priced. For me personally, one of the drivers for Dominican Shuttle, Santos De La Cruz was was outstanding. He provided transportation not only from the airport to the hotel, but because of the kindness and personality that he displayed, I requested him for other ground transportation. If I had to assign a grade in reference to my stay at the Barcelo hotel, it would be a solid “B”.

    “Comfortable, Nice stay!”

I visited the Dominican Republic late May this year for the second time. I stayed in Punta Cana but spent a couple days in Santo Domingo. I had planned a trip to the capital but wasn’t sure about staying overnight. Before my tripped I kind of looked around and seen what the hotels were like but did not book anything. Well after the long drive down to Santo Domingo and having a full busy day we were too exhausted to return to Punta Cana. So I searched quick and found this place. It was reasonably price (I didn’t want to spend more than $140 USD), had viability and good reviews. So we booked it literally less than an hour before pulling up to the hotel. I’m very particular about hotels and know you get what you pay for. Especially in the DR! I admit I started to only look for American hotels because I knew those chains. Yet overall I enjoyed my stay and was very comfortable. The hotel is beautiful. The main lobby is very modern and reminded me of hotels back in the States. The front desk staff was very friendly! We checked in pretty late but it was fast and easy. I speak Spanish pretty well and my friend is fluent but after the long day I was happy the staff was bilingual which made things even more easier for me. They informed us of the restaurants, bars the pool etc. but honestly, we were so tired we just wanted to shower and go to bed. It all looked really nice and I wish I could have enjoyed them. But like I said I wasn’t even planning on stay the night in Santo Domingo. I loved the room. It was just what I wanted, nice, clean and modern/updated. It was even better than the room at my resort back in Punta Cana. The shower and bed was the best ever! Nice hot water and clean white plus sheets/pillows. Again, I was tired so I might have enjoyed it a bit much! The king size bed was a real king and super comfortable. It was huge so we had plenty of room to spread out. Mini Bar was stocked nicely with water, drinks, liquor/beer, snacks and even medication (all cost so be careful with what you take). The only thing I was not too happy with was it seemed the air took a while to kick on and we had trouble figuring out how to work it. Would have been nice if the room was cool right when we walked in but it was okay we managed. I’m from Minnesota so I need air in this hot country! We also ordered room service which I never do but again I was exhausted. The choice were pretty good. We order some Dominican appetizers and a margarita pizza. It took a pretty long time to come. I had almost fell asleep waiting on it. We called and complained and it was there shortly. When it did come it was a bit cold which was upsetting and reminded me why I never order room service! Tatse okay like typical room service food . Anyway we ate it and were fine. Check out was easy again. Staff was very helpful and friendly. So besides the air and the not so good room service this place is overall a great hotel. I would defiantly go back (just will eat elsewhere) and hopefully enjoy the amenities. If you’re looking for a nice comfortable more modern hotel, this is that place.

    “Great Stay!!”

I recently returned from the DR and had the pleasure of staying at the Barcelo Hotel. Having visited the DR before, past visits have been at all-inclusive beachfront resorts. This was my first to the DR at both a hotel property as well as Santo Domingo. The Barcelo-Santa Domingo is a marvelous 3.5 star resort hotel with amenities that rival many all-inclusive resorts. Accommodations are well appointed and on par with what you would similarly find at a Hyatt or Marriott-like property in the states, for a fraction of the cost ($77 - $88 per night). The property features 2 premier dining experiences available onsite with modest dining options found at the Barcelo’s Piano Bar, Pastry Shop, and Cigar Bar. During my stay, I dined at the hotels B-Delicious buffet restaurant where the food was marvelously prepared and tasted great. Dominican coffee at the Pastry Shop each morning was well received and the hospitable services of both Danni and Scarlet are to be commended. As a suggestion, be sure to ask about upgrading your stay at the Barcelo and taking advantage of breakfast and sun tanning on the hotel’s Premier Level where a Jacuzzi can also be found. I highly recommend this property and will be sure to visit again. FYI, should you decide to visit this property and find yourself being a bit Spanish handicapped, as I am, be sure to seek out Henry, the hotels doorman. He speaks fluent English and is very attentive to whatever your requests/questions may be during your stay.
