Overall the resort is clean and staff is friendly. An additional fee for wifi is crazy! This should not occur at a top tier all inclusive. French and Italian restaurants were excellent! The towel cards are silly, why?

    “Thank you, Edwardo.”

This was our first time at the Barcelo Maya Palace. The pool was amazing and our kids had a great time but we need to send a special thank you to the manager Edwardo. He went above and beyond to make our stay memorable. Thank you, from room 8555.

    “1st time all-inclusive”

I will likely not choose an all inclusive again due to this visit. Pros- Absolutely beautiful grounds everywhere on the resort Nice long sandy beach with lots of chairs Great pool areas for different ages (we loved the adult pool with the cabanas, bare, frog fountains and no kids) Rooms are nice size with big shower, double sinks and 2 great closets Cool Maya Mall Nice Chapel for Easter Mass Lots of buffets and bars on the resort (we had our pick because of staying at the Palace, I guess) Most of the employees were very friendly Brasserie (Adrian was Awesome) Cons- Resort. Is. Too. Big. Lots of walking - even if you take the bus Not enough variety of liquor/drinks -with the popularity of flavored vodka and ciders in US, I expected more than Absolut Citron and regular Skyy (they had only draft Corona and had no cider drinks) Food options are plentiful on all the buffet lines, but lack quality in most cases Process for reserving dinner at the restaurants is silly (we stayed 6 nights and were only able to book 3 nights per day so when we went to book the last 3 nights on the 2nd day, there were very few times available) Rooms need dehumidifiers - slightly mildew smell every time I came in the room and things just will not dry So many guests form US and many customer facing employees do not speak or understand English Read reviews before I went and suggestions were to tip well to get better service but this did not work for us as we did tip and still never got the robe/slippers for the 3rd person in our room or the 3rd hand towel/wash cloth any day We also tipped the beverage guy the first day and some days never even got our water in our VERY poorly cooling fridge replaced Very little music/entertainment for adults Scheduled entertainment not well publicized - the few things they did have, we found out about on accident Buses did not always announce the restaurants at each stop, so we missed ours one night and had to try to get back to be on time When you could not see which way the bus came from, you may get on the one going the wrong direction and then you would either have to get off at next stop to catch the one going the other way OR stay on that one for the up to 1/2 hour loop Driver could not always understand us Need more music in lobby bars Quantity over quality is evident in almost every aspect of the resort and since I have nothing to compare it to, as stated earlier, I will not likely go the all inclusive route again. I would rather pick some top rated places nearby to eat/drink and get the quality.

    “Definitely research before going!!!!!!”

We heard so many complaints from people who did not know wifi was extra, reservations are required and how much walking will be required. We sent email to resort 10 days prior to arrival and can honestly say this was first resort to never respond in any fashion. We requested any floor, any building - just close to lobby if possible. Although no response was received they may have got ours as we were in first building in Michoacan building which pleased us much. Beach - 4.7/5 Room - 3.7/5 Service - 4.5/5 Loungers - 5/5 Pools - 4.5/5 Resort Size - 2.5/5 Spa - 4.8/5 Location - 3/5 Food - 3.2/5 Buses - 1.5/5 Up charges for so many things - 1.5/5 Grounds - 4.8/5 Shopping - 2/5 Beach- walkable with rocky areas for decent snorkeling and soft clean areas for swimming at other end. Great colors of sea. Swimming with sea turtles was an absolute highlight and one of the largest reasons why we may return - just awesome! Room - some rooms are so far from anything except a bus stop it is ridiculous. Our particular room got cool but never cold. We both agreed this room was the worst moldy mildew type smell we have ever encountered even with candles (that we brought) and febreze sheets scattered throughout. We did not request move as location was what we asked for. Many outlets were not working and sliding doors most did not work well. Peep hole was reversed so unless blocked from inside anybody could look in your room. TV went out when it rained several times, not that we would usually care but we had skipped wifi upcharge which left us very disconnected with poor weather at times, spa would have been nice option but it is an upcharge as well and pretty far away and no return bus from there after 6. Bed was not as bad as some reviews state but just fair as stiff sheets and firm mattress. Ceiling fan looked and sounded as if it would fly from ceiling at any moment. Only two tiny trash cans. Bathroom was nice but toiletries were poor. Size of room OK but not remarkable. Service - for largest part was very good. Loungers - palace end utilizes the modern higher quality ones than the rest of resort which uses old style blue cloth ones that break down quickly. If you have a bad back this is a great plus. Pools - very nice. Very clean. Lap pool becomes play pool at times unfortunately. Spa - almost identical to their spa in DR. Wonderful, relaxing, great area. Prices a little on high end. Only complaint is that hydrotherapy circuit is extra for palace guests and getting there can be a challenge and time consuming. Location - great beach location for resort but many guests rooms are going to be a long way from places to eat, beach, spa etc. Food- subjective we know. We very much enjoyed French twice and RODIZIO but buffets while they are well optioned it does get repetitive and never know which side will be open. We both had GI illness near end of trip which put damper on what otherwise had been going outstandingly well. They do not allow food to be taken out of any eatery. Chateaubriand was very good. Drinks not consistent at all from one bar to another. Room service - of course - it costs extra! Buses- if weather is nice top provides nice pleasant view and ride. If you are at beach resort or palace lobby you know what direction you are going to go, if not be prepare to backtrack exactly where you fo not want to go! If it is rainy and top closed know there is no air circulation and one of our trips the entire bus smelled of vomitus - I thought a puke train was going to break out any minute with the horrible stench and no circulating air - yuk. We decided we would walk no matter what after that and that is exactly what we did! Up charges - where does one start? Bowling understood, special wine understood, ocean front room understood, but it just seems to not end here. We even saw a set of scales and commented how nice of an option that was for people, yep we had to go to multiple people to get coins to use the scales to weigh our bags on the way out! Even dunkin donuts and gas stations offer free wifi - come on everyone almost is connected now a days and they have already ran the routers to offer it! Ridiculous and wrong - management reads the reviews yet they continue to not offer it - poor decision!!!!!! I would have to agree with many other reviews that they should be considered inclusive not all inclusive with so many upcharges. Grounds- wow, they try to keep property looking magnificent. If you use map and learn walkways it is not too bad to walk to other areas of complex as long as you have no mobility issues. Shopping - palace is limited with overpriced and few options. Mexican area best bet yet far from palace and Mayan mall far and overpriced. They could offer much better options for guests in this area. We even started to check out of one shop initially and was told we could not pay cash - charge to room only! Towel cards were given and enforced at shacks yet saw many people with stacks of them. Overall this is a great resort for a beach vacation as it has a fantastic beach!! We may return with family or as couple but only if we find a great price such as this trip was. Hope this helps - pm if you have specific questions.

    “A veritable Palace”

Barcelo Maya Palace is truly a palace from the huge lobby to the beautiful lounge which almost has the feel of being on a cruise ship sitting and watching the waves as you sip your cocktail and nibble on their tapas. There are so many nooks and crannies to sit and enjoy the beautiful views. There are many boutiques and gift shops and everything you need for your beach requirements. The Premium Lounge is spectacular and we enjoyed going there or the lounge for a pre dinner cocktail. The staff were just incredible from the check-in to getting you just about anything you need. Everyone was so helpful and trying so hard to make your vacation the perfect one and they succeeded beyond our expectations. Everyday we went to the Maya Caribe to see our family who took such incredible care of us - Senor Gregor Wieczorek who can multi-task like no one - watching everything while making you laugh with his great jokes - what a pleasure he is and of course Luis Vasquez and the Captain Agenor Velasco who went out of their way to make lunch everyday such a beautiful experience - thank you so much! We will make the trek down again next year for sure. We will definitely be going back again to the Palace next year and probably every year hereafter - it is my dream holiday for sure! I wish I could name all the people who made our vacation so perfect but suffice it to say Barcelo seems to hand pick their incredible staff!
