    “Good location, but was a disappointment - Over-paid”

    Great location! There is a shopping center is within walking distance in which you can buy a lot (souvenirs, water gear like shoes and swimsuits, sunblock, hats, clothes, a small grocery store is there as well - take pesos) for much less there than at the hotel. There are also restaurants located at that center, including familiar fast food. The beach is right outside the hotel, which is awesome! They rent out paddle boats and other equipment. The jet skis, parasail, & banana boat are not part of the hotel, use at your own risk. The mini fridge in the room is stocked daily with 2 bottled waters, 4 soda cans (Pepsi and 7-up), and 2 Corona beer cans. The room has an air conditioner and a safe to store valuables. The shower door in the bathroom doesn't close all the way, allowing a lot of water to get on the bathroom floor. The shower wall is see-through, meaning you can see who is showering or on the toilet - fine for couples, not so for everyone else. The closet is very small. No balcony. No free Wi-Fi. Those padded pool seats you see in the pictures are not available to the regular hotel guests, neither is the hot tub nor the cabana beds on the beach. The pool is clean and hot. The walls are super thin - you can hear everything! from people walking and talking down the hall to the nightly entertainment in the lobby. Employees at the hotel do not like to volunteer information. When you are new to an area and are not sure what to ask, usually the employee who checks you in and the concierge readily and willingly give you information without you asking for any. That was not the case at Occidental. The employee at concierge seemed annoyed to assist us. Housekeeping will bring you stuff when you ask and they will make your bed and take out the trash but check your room - either our pillow cases were not cleaned/replaced when we checked in or their machines do not work as some of our pillow cases had lipstick stains (neither of us wear lipstick), they would also just fold your bath towels and place them back on the rack instead of giving you new ones like other hotels do - two of our towels that were on the rack were visibly dirty so we had to ask for new towels and made sure to do so daily after that. The buffet restaurant was good - they have a different theme for dinner each evening in which they focused on a specific country's or area's cuisine. The Tokyo restaurant was a mix of Japanese and Chinese. They have a Benihana type show on the hour - we were not told this until we showed up for our reservation and thus missed the show/presentation. No big deal but this further reinforces that the concierge doesn't give information. Michelle obviously didn't care about helping us and ensuring we had a pleasant stay. By the way, you have to make reservations for dinner at their restaurants through the concierge. Also, they do not have a map of their hotel to give you upon arrival, which would have been handy. Their gym is small but has very new equipment. Their spa is nice and the masseuses are good. Do not be fooled by the pictures they have online - rooms and areas are much smaller in person. They have scheduled activities throughout the day at the pool and their outdoor theatre. Pool staff, entertainment staff, and buffet staff were nice and attentive. Concierge and check-in employees should learn from them.

    “Large Family Vacation”

    We were a group of 17 that got moved from Barceló to Occidental after having our reservations for 3 months b/c a company reserved the entire hotel, but we went in with an open mind. The staff were all very pleasant and accommodating (Team Bell Boys: Luis Mora, Carlos, Erick). Ernesto, the dive instructor, and his company were truly amazing! They took us diving/snorkeling at Los Arcos and we were even able to visit some friends at Mismaloya who own a cantina on the beach - an absolute wonderful day!!! We did not "upgrade" to the preferred club and didn't seem to make a difference in our experience - had a GREAT vacation. Rooms: clean and comfortable; we had adjoining rooms due to 17 of us traveling with teenagers and worked out very well; water pressure was great for showers; had our room cleaned every other day and was always cleaned before 4pm. Restaurants: 3 restaurants require reservations; we only ate at the Mexican one night and was absolutely delicious!!! Definitely recommend. The buffet worked better for us at all times due to having teenagers running around and eating when they wanted with a larger variety. We did go into old PV and eat at Pepe's one night - absolutely delicious food, great atmosphere and wonderful staff!! Activities: the girls painted pottery, and I cannot remember the employees name, but he was a master artist! He would hand paint the designs, the girls painted them, he re-outlined them and had them ready the next day - they turned out beautiful! There were pool games/entertainment during the day. Kids played ALOT of volleyball. Paddle boarding and kayaks are free to use. They had a nightly show at 9pm and then there would be a musician in the outside lounge. The bartenders were all GREAT and very accommodating for the kids and non-alcoholic drinks or the adults who wanted "double shots" in their drinks - and they REMEMBER what your drinking so sometimes they just brought me another one! :) Don't forget to tip all the staff, they work very hard to make your trip the best! Overall the experience was wonderful. Our kids loved their first visit to Mexico and are ready to go back!

    “Great Holiday”

    This is a great holiday spot. Resort has what you would expect located about 20 minutes from the Puerto Vallarta airport. Resort is located ocean front with white sandy beach. Waves are small to medium sized and very swimmable and the resort has boogie boards and water crafts for use for no charge. 3 a la carte restaurants are included with Italian, Mexican, & Japanese. As well a buffet restaurant for breakfast, lunch and supper. All were very good in service and food. There is also a bar pool side open day time and a lunch only restaurant located ocean and pool view. There is also a bar next to main lobby. Rooms are modern and clean. We paid an extra $300 Canadian dollars for our ten day stay for an ocean view. It gave us a pool view as well. To upgrade the cost is $30 US per person. This includes an extra restaurant located on the 7th floor as well a pool for only those with the up grade. The gym and fitness centre is well equipped with an out door tennis and basketball courts. As well There is lots for the kids at this resort as they have a kids area. Also a life sized chest board. Every night at 9pm there is a themed dance show at the out side covered stage. Would be nice if this was inside and air conditioned Things we thought that need improving are the Mexican restaurant and out door stage are is open walls and no air conditioning. It was very hot and windy. We would recommend this resort.

    “Amazing Time once again at Occidental”

    My dad and I came to this resort for the 2nd time because of the the amazing service that we had last year. It was because of the Activities/Entertainment Team. My special thanks to Lizbeth, Jonathan, Vincent and Luigi. They were excellent! Along with that, the food, bartenders, waitress, hostesses, maids were all great as well! Looks like this is going to be an annual trip to Occidental now :)...Highly recommend this resort!

    “Great for the price”

    My girlfriend and I went on a girls trip and ended up at this resort. The resort is very nice and clean, staff super friendly and always smiling. The food however, is subpar at best with the same proteins in different sauces for both lunch and dinner. There also seemed to be a 1.5 hour gap between breakfast and lunch so if you wanted food between that gap, you won't have a place to eat. Overall, for the value we paid, this place is great. Beach was within steps from the hotel, and we saw sea turtles during our nightly walks! If you need a place to sleep at night and a clean beach to lay around for a few days, this place will work for you. If you're looking for a lot of entertainment, quality food/drinks, maybe try another resort instead.
