“Cheeky week AI in sunny Almeria”

One very warm. . .no, hot week in Almeria! 12/05/17 Lovely hotel with welcoming receptionists although not a lot to do in the surrounding area re shops, bars etc. Very quiet and peaceful. Three weeks prior to this holiday we stayed a week in the CaboGataMar. . . Full of children and not what we expected (Sun Connect) not our choice, the hotel we originally booked was closing so our tour operator offered it to us. The Barcelo is next door and a better hotel, in our opinion. The room and bathroom were very nice. Comfy bed, spotless bed linen, loads of pillows. Large room on the second floor with a view of the sea, garden and car park. The bathroom was well equipped with a separate shower (no shower curtain as in previous hotel mentioned. . ) bath, toiletries and beautiful fluffy, white towels.Good air conditioning and a fan. Rooms maybe a little dated by today's standards and a bit in need of some refurb, but really nothing to complain about. The room was kept very clean and tidy by the housekeeping staff. The in room safe is free to AI guests. The pool area is spacious with three pools, showers and you can always find a sunbed. The sunbeds are so much better than the ones in the hotel next door! There is plenty shade as well if you need it.Towels 10E refundable deposit. There was an excellent choice of food in the restaurant. Two kinds of fish, several meat dishes and a carvery most evenings. . . the pork was delicious! They had two evenings when some of the meat dishes were cooked and served outdoors. The chefs and restaurant staff were helpful and friendly. You can have as much wine as you want and not have to beg for it as in some AI hotels. There was a bit of an issue during busy times at the bar with queuing and only one behind the bar, this seemed to be resolved as the week progressed. The bar staff were lovely especially Jose who enjoyed a bit of a chat, time allowing! At first the hotel did appear to be understaffed. The animation team worked hard and tried to keep guests entertained. Most of the evening entertainment was in the pool bar area. A quick mention for the lovely Lithuanian girl behind the pool bar during the day on her own. Her English was excellent as was her Spanish. Always smiling and happy to oblige. Sorry, I can't remember her name. There are some lovely walks along the boardwalks and paved promenade, you could walk to the edge of the airport. The beach is a bit gravelly and stony. There are no sun loungers to lay on but there are showers. . . .a lot of the locals were down there on Sunday. The weather was a bit on the hot side (34c or more) with a breeze like a fan oven, so it was even hot in the shade! Maybe it was a heatwave for the time of year. . . We loved the hotel and hopefully we will return later in the year or early next year.

    “Brilliant family holiday”

Upon arrival we checked in easily. The reception staff speak some English. The only slight complaint we had all week is that when checking in I asked if there was a cot for the baby and was told yes. This didn't arrive for a couple of hours - but baby happily slept in her pram. We went HB. The breakfast was just fabulous. Lots of choice. Plenty of variety of hot drinks and foods. Cooked breakfast, pancakes and waffles etc, cereal and croissants and fruit etc. The evening meal options were great. A decent variety. At least 4 meat options on every night, with labels in English, Spanish and German. A couple of the reviews say the food wasn't very warm, if you went as the food was put out - it was hot. They are cooking as people wait or for the demand that there is. There's a huge variety of salads, fruit etc. There's always fries, potato and rice. Lots of veg options. Desserts are incredible. We also ate the bar food. Not a huge amount of variety but really big portions and worth the money. There are 3 swimming pools and a baby pool. All clean and tidy. Lots of sunloungers and shaded areas. There are lifeguards on duty too. 2 of the pools are sloped so easily accessible for everyone. Our 11 month old loved being in the water. The bedrooms were lovely and spacious even ours that had a cot in it. We were in room 320 which was away from the bar, by the far pool but with a sea view. It was really quiet whilst we were there. The housekeeping staff were really friendly and kept high standards. The reception staff helped us get the bus to Almeria with a map and a bus timetable. We also needed a bath mat which they provided and sent up straight away. As a side note - there's not a huge amount around but we liked that it was a quiet area, great beach access - though it is shingle not sand. There are a couple of supermarkets nearby. A few restaurants if you follow the beach along for 5-10 minutes, and a couple more another 5-10 minute walk from the centre. Overall, a really great holiday. Thank you very much for your hospitality.
