Occidental Cala Viñas reviewed by 91genieke on . Relaxing Holyday Super hotel, I'll definitely return. But before it had an other name. It was from BARCELO. Hotels all over the world. The food is exellent in ordinary restaurant but if you ten euros pay extra on... Rating: 4

Hotel is way more expansive than it is worth. Ask about room they propose you before you confirm your booking, because at site you will be asked to pay more for upgrade to room that should be standard.

    “Family holiday”

We returned to Cala Vinas with high hopes after last visiting here 3 years ago where we had a lovely time. We have since become "my barcelo" memebers and enjoy the benifits that this brings. Well that all changed on this trip and this has to be the worst Barceló hotel we have visited. Despite requesting an early check in and a 12 o'clock check in being offered as part of the Barceló rewards scheme I was dismayed on arrival at 130pm to be given our room keys then to be told we must return the keys as the room wouldn't be ready for 10 minutes. The receptionist became very demanding and rude because the person with the keys had wandered off. This set the tone for the holiday, with only the odd exception, we found the staff to be unfriendly, rude and unhelpful. No smiles from anyone in the restaurant, bar and the reception staff were truly dreadful. The entertainment crew work hard and put on a good amateur show which at times is so bad it's nearly good. The entertainment manager needs to realise that the customer comes first, during one night's performance he stopped the activity to wipe the sweat off his brow while berating the audience for not applauding loudly enough, saying "I'm sweating here for you, at least you could clap louder" he then spent 15 minutes signing the praises of his teams performance. The food was terrible, often under cooked, with a poor choice of food. The waiters are so focused on clearing tables they take half eaten dishes away if you turn your back for a minute. No smiles or welcome, it feels like you are not welcome and certainly not an enjoyable experience. Plastic cups are the norm everywhere, even at night in the main bar area and the whole experience felt cheap and rushed. Sun loungers were reserved by 7am and often unused all day, just towels left there all day. No sun shade to speak of, no umbrellas. The life guard was excellent and kept an eagle eye out all day, it's a shame everyone else didn't have his work ethic. Overall a very disappointing stay ruined by the staff who need to remember why they are there. I don't complain normally but in this case I am struggling to find much to praise. Much better Barceló hotels available that's for sure.

    “Honest Review”

Honest Opinion I will begin on the positives as this hotel has the potential to be a 4* but it is a 3* at present. The hotel is situated out of the way of Magaluf which was the main attraction for me and it is set around a lovely cove... peaceful and tranquil... perfect for quiet time... Firstly I want to say the reception staff were extremely welcoming and friendly and after an error with my booking they sorted it quickly and I even got a complimentary room upgrade which after an early start was very welcomed. The reception is the newest part of this hotel and is quite enticing... The room itself had been refurbished it was big and airy and very nice. I have no complaints what so ever here however the hotel is really big... you have to get in a different lift to get to certain parts depending which block you are in it took me a few days to find my way around... all really confusing! Both pools are lovely and clean I spent a lot of time near the kids splash pool as I had my little girl travelling with me this is great for kids under 6 anyone older it's too small and often the older ones were a bit too rough and my little girl got pushed over a few times... The lifeguard in this area is a mood killer! She kept telling everyone to stop doing this and stop doing that and said my little girl couldn't go down the slide... she's nearly 5 and it's a perfect sized slide for her so not quite sure what her issue was! She didn't speak English so kept talking in Spanish to us I just nodded but had no idea what she was on about! The animation/entertainment team were the highlight of our stay.... I cannot stress enough how hard they work and kept the children entertained from the moment they woke until the moment they went to bed... a massive shout out to the head of animation he is hilarious and you can tell he loves his job! I can't remember all of their names but they ALL are amazing at what they do.... the kids club was amazing.. when it was too hot for the kids they went in the shade and painted, coloured in, face painted and played games... you had to sign your child in every time which was brilliant and very safe They knew every child's name which was nice and the children were familiar with them all which put my mind at rest. Now for the food.... I was violently ill for 4 out of 7 days I'm not entirely sure what it was that I ate but it didn't agree with me... the food choice wasn't the best especially for kids unless they like pizza which my daughter doesn't... so she survived most of the holiday on sweetcorn, cucumber and bread! I also found that sometimes food that was served at night was reheated and put out for lunch the following day which isn't ideal obviously... I did not enjoy the food side of things at the hotel at all... I think this is something that needs to be addressed as soon as possible before someone gets really ill! The restaurant was so so loud the staff pushed trollies full of plates and cutlery through the restaurant it was ear piercing and off putting especially first thing in the morning the staff work hard but none of them ever looked happy! There was a constant smell of sewage wherever you were in the hotel... if you were sat by the pool or by the beach or at the entertainment at night it was disgusting so that definitely needs addressing! The bar staff in the bar of an evening were very friendly and knew what I was going to order of a night which was lovely and personal. The entertainment by the hotel animation team was really good and very funny but the outside entertainment could be improved massively... All in all... I wouldn't stay here again... purely because I go all inclusive to enjoy the food and I found it to be the worst I've ever experienced at an all inclusive hotel.

Great location if you want to be away from the main drag, nice, small fairly private beach. We had the all- inclusive and stayed two days ( Dad and 14 yr old daughter travelling together then onwards on the island) . Good service all round. Buffet food in main restaurant for breakfast and dinner was if a good standard and good variety. Room was very clean and bed was fine but of average decor and corridor would be noisy if one had late- night neighbors. Only real negative was having to " rent" beach towels with deposit euro 20 in cash - which we also got back, but only luck that I had it in my wallet.

    “Fantastic summer hotel”

In July this year my family and I had a full week summer holiday and enjoyed the hospitality of the hosts at the Occidental Cala Vinas hotel. Location is beautiful and the premisess is in superb condition. We stayed at the hotel first time 7 years ago, and have been regular since then. Take your next summer holiday at this location and you will not regret it.
