    “A Fantastic stay”

Me and my partner have just returned from a weeks break at Barcelo Santiago and honestly could not have wished for a better hotel. Upon arrival our bags were taken to our room by a lovely, friendly concierge. The room we were in was spotless, modern and the view, utterly amazing. There is lots of space, USB ports to charge your phone, a fridge, reading lights, hairdryer provided and a lovely bathroom. We got to wake up each morning surrounded by the sea and the beautiful mountains which were absolutely stunning. There was a great selection of food at breakfast including pancakes, pastries, freshly made omelettes, cooked breakfasts and even bubbly! Lunches and dinners also had a great selection, something for everyone, with fresh seafood dishes most nights which was great for me! There is also the option to have food at the pool bar at lunch time if you don't fancy venturing to the all inclusive buffet. The view from the sunbeds is also beautiful. There is a rocky beach by the hotel where the water is crystal blue and there are lots of little rocky islands.(Would definitely recommend snorkeling there). My other half booked the romantic meal for us as it was our anniversary whilst we were there. This was a lovely 5 course meal set out overlooking the sea and the mountains as the sun set. The lovely lady he spoke to on reception also arranged a bottle of sparkling rose wine and a chocolate rose to our room as a surprise for our anniversary, with a card to say congratulations which was a lovely personal touch. Overall I can't fault the hotel, it was a lovely, romantic, relaxing stay we both thoroughly enjoyed. I will definitely be looking at other Barcelo resorts in the future after staying at this beautiful location.

    “YOU WILL NOT BE DISAPPOINTED”

We stayed here for a week from the 6th to the 13th September which from the minute of turning up we all knew that was going to be way to short. Upon arrival you are met with the most beautiful views of the sea and the cliffs. All staff throughout the hotel are so nice and friend and always happy to help. We had a sea view room and the view sure was something of perfection to wake up to every morning, the beds where big and comfortable rooms tidied and cleaned for you with fresh towels everyday. The pool area is full of sun loungers more then enough for everyone and there was never any trouble getting them. The food was always amazing and they had something to suit everyone and the deserts were always to die for. The only fault I think we can say we had with the hotel was the entertainment was always quite short as it started at 21:30 and finished at just before 23:00 and some nights when sitting in the bar area they didn’t always have music playing in the background leading up to the entertainment. But this hotel is amazing and is by far the best hotel I have stayed at in Tenerife and we will 100% be making a return. See you soon Barcelo Santiago!

    “Oh dear, standards are slipping!”

My wife and I have just returned from Tenerife, having had a week out there in the sun. Because of the wonderful stay we had at the Barcelo Santiago last year we decided to return again this year. Whilst I feel that we did make the right choice for the location of our holiday, it was noticeable that some standards at the Barcelo Santiago have fallen from where they were last year. For example, my wife asked a member of staff if they could help locate a parasol for her so that she could sit in the shade by the pool, and out of the hot sun. The male member of staff was surly to the point of being downright rude, and left my wife feeling extremely embarrassed at having asked for help in the first place. In fairness, the majority of the staff at the hotel were excellent and had very high professional standards. It may have been the case that the guy my wife spoke to was 'having a bad day', but I still don't think that she deserved to be treated in the way she was. Additionally, we booked (and paid the extra fee of 40 euros) the 'Romantic Dinner'. When I enquired, at the time of booking, what foods were available I was informed, by the staff on Reception, that the dinner was from a menu as opposed to being the buffet style menu in the main restaurant. When we got to our table we discovered that it was a set menu, of five courses, including separate fish and meat courses. Great for me, but somewhat problematic for my vegetarian wife. When I tried to raise this issue with the waiter it transpired that it was very definitely a set menu, and we did have two choices; take it or leave it! Come on Barcelo, this is wholly unacceptable! To not offer any vegetarian options seemed like we were 'stepping back' into the dark ages. Needless to say, my wife went hungry and we left the table totally disappointed. And yes, I did feel that I had been ripped off! Also, the Wi-Fi in the hotel leaves a lot to be desired. I'm not one for constantly checking emails whilst I'm on holiday, but I do have a job whereby I do need access to the internet periodically. When we arrived we were given a WiFi log in code to access the Barcelo Santiago secure WiFi. However, in our room (914) this simply did not work. The best I managed to achieve was to access the Barcelo insecure WiFi. However, if there was someone else in the hotel who happened to be using the 'insecure' network too it became impossible to access the internet at all. I'm not sure who the Barcelo engaged to install their IT, but I rather think those that did install their hardware are having a joke at the Barcelo's expense. Or, it could well be that they experienced the 'Romantic Dinner' too, and this was their way of paying the Barcelo Santiago back! Overall, the vast majority of the staff were fantastic but they were let down by a couple of their colleagues, and it's the poor staff that I remember. As the saying goes; you never get a second chance to make a first impression! I use the Barcelo 'chain' of hotels throughout various locations in Spain a lot, and I have always been impressed with the service, professionalism and quality, but on this occasion I left the Barcelo Santiago feeling 'ripped off' and let down. The sole reason for returning to Los Gigantes, and the Barcelo Santiago, this year was because to the experience we had last year. I rather think that whilst I will continue to use a hotel from the Barcelo chain it won't be the Barcelo Santiago, because of the service we received this year.

“Great hotel, good rooms, friendly staff but could be better.”

We had a family holiday at Barceló Santiago in August this year. Overall this is a pretty good hotel but there were two areas where it could do with a bit of improvement. Upon arrival we were given champagne/sparkling wine, which was good as it took us nearly 45 minutes to get checked in (after 12 hours of travelling, not what we needed). Despite knowing a load of new guests were arriving, there were only 2 staff manning the reception desk. They did there best, as quickly as they could but throughout our stay, the small number of people on the reception desk proved to be a bit of a pain. We had two rooms (302 and 304) and both had recently had a refurb. Both rooms were spacious enough and had good balconies with a sea view. For the first day, all was good. From the 2nd day onwards, the waste water drainage in room 302 started being a problem. The shower flooded the bathroom and when flushing the toilet, waste water came up through the shower plug hole - which kicked up a real stink. I reported this to reception on 3 occasions (and to the TUI rep who was next to useless) and on the 3rd visit, a repair guy had a go at fixing the problem. He sorted the draining of the shower water but the waste water continued to come up - I gave up at this point. The main restaurant in the hotel was good, although very warm indoors (most people ate alfresco) and there was a reasonable variation of food throughout the week (more theme nights needed??). The quality of the food was fantastic! First Choice website advertised the hotel as having an a-la-carte restaurant but one didn't seem to exist. Entertainment - seemed ok although due to a lack of hotel information from the TUI rep, it was a bit of a guess to find out if it was being held near the pool bar, or in a side room at the front of the hotel. The pools were pretty good and there wasn't any real fighting for sunbeds in the morning - although there were the usual bunch getting up early to reserve beds, despite the hotel saying reserving of sunbeds isn't permitted. There are a few shops very near the hotel and even more in Los Gigantes and Playa de la Arena which are both a very short taxi ride away (cost is about 3 euros each way). All in all, we had a good week here - I don't think I could have managed 2 weeks, as there isn't a great deal to do (the TUI arranged trips are a bit naff, except for the West Tenerife water sports). 10 out of 10 for the hotel staff though - everyone was very friendly and helpful.

“We had a lovely holiday here!”

Fantastic location with views from the rooms of either La Gomera or Los Gigantes. The room and bathroom were a good size with a large balcony with a canopy. There is not much space to put clothes and although kettle provided we had to ask for tea, coffee and water to be replenished most days, but this was done promptly. Bathrobes and slippers. were supplied and a good hairdryer. Also a fridge and USB port for phone charger. We were half board and found a good variety and quality of food at both meals although dishes were not clearly labelled. Main problem at breakfast is the self service drinks machines dispense very slowly causing queues. Staff were friendly and helpful but more staff on duty at reception would give a better impression on arrival. All public areas were clean and attractive. We didn't stay in for evening entertainment as there is enough to do in bars around the hotel. Nice walks to Los Gigantes and La Arena if you can manage the hills. Bus runs to Los Cristianos every half hour but again you need to walk up a steep hill. We hope to return before too long as we thought the holiday was good value for money.
