“Barcelo Aruba. The Good, The Bad and the Ugly with Tips”

Traveled March 17th - 24th Booked 2 rooms for 4 people back in December. $1750 pp for 6 nights of Royal Service though Orbitz. Taxi to hotel took 15 mins and is $25. The Good - Great location, right across the street from a 2 plazas with restaurants, shops and bars. Royal Service is a must. The quality of the food is far superior then the food at the buffets. Rooms are nice and bathrooms recently renovated. The pool and beach were spotless. The employees were very friendly and the I was very impressed that they clean the rooms several times day. The shows were somewhat entertaining and a tad better than most all inclusive. Hibachi restaurant was also a lot of fun and the food was pretty good. The staff in all the restaurants were great. The Bad - Though we called the hotel 6 weeks prior to ask pool/ocean view rooms, they totally denied our request and put us in the Ocean/Ally view rooms. These rooms come with a 730 am waste disposal wake up call and 4:30am on thur. nights. Buffets were blah and typical to most average all inclusive. The lagoons around the grounds need to be cleaned, all were half empty and dirty. The Ugly- Once again we are starting off with pool chairs. Cmon guys you run a multi million $ chain and nobody has figured out to buy a few extra chairs and portable umbrellas to accommodate every guest. The pool bar is an annoying hit or miss. The bartenders are slow and aren't attentive enough to adhere to the laws of first come first served. Beach volleyball court on only has a hard concrete like base covered with sand if you dive you will skin your knees and elbows. TIPS Go to the beach shop, they have snorkeling equipment for free, hop in a taxi and have them take you to the best snorkeling spots. Put towels on your chairs before going to bed Get pool/ocean view rooms Use the royal beach bar which is always empty Get the royal service and eat breakfast and lunch on the 9th fl. Bring a large mug and have the bartenders fill it Don't dive playing volleyball

    “Average Hotel, Poor Food”

Before I list all of the negatives, I must say that the location of the hotel is ideal! Located centrally along Palm Beach, surrounded by other beautiful resorts, shops, and lovely beaches, everything was in walking distance. Now onto the bad stuff. The wifi is not free to guests, you must pay a high rate of $60 per device, per 7 day visit. When we first walked into Deluxe Ocean View Room, we looked out the window to see a scenic view of the dumpy parking lot, with little ocean in sight. We had paid $300 extra for an ocean view, and we got a parking lot, and when we complained to the desk , they told us that "deluxe view" meant "partial view". Our room service was decent; however, the room was always wet and very dingy. Our main turnoff was the buffet. The food was indigestible, the service was slow, and the man at the omelet bar kept trying to make me fried eggs, when I asked for a spinach omelet, simply because "fried eggs are easier to make". There was no fresh fruit, and the choices were repetitive. So much for an all inclusive, we couldn't stand the food so much that by our third day, we decided to dine out for every meal. Finally, I was extremely annoyed when one of the security men kept referring to my mother and I as "Easter Bunnies", and continuously interrupting our vacation. The man even had the guts to question why we didn't have a man with us on our trip! Overall, the staff was not as welcoming or kind as one would hope. In conclusion, do not waste your money on this all inclusive resort, it is not worth the stress.

    “Mother Daughter trip”

This was our third trip to an all inclusive resort, first time in Aruba. The front desk staff and concierge personal were less than helpful, but the wait staff and pool/beach staff were wonderful. When asked if there were mopeds/scooters to rent on the island the concierge looked at me like I had 2 heads and had no idea if there were any to rent on the island. The front desk was less than accommodating for a late check out. When asked if there were any showers or area to clean up, again I got a blank stare and a flat no. I then learned from another guest that they do have a changing area for just that. Our room had a full kitchen; stove, fridge, microwave but not a single utensil, cup, plate, or pans. Had a blender but no glasses to put your drink into. Two of the four lights were burned out in the kitchen area as well. Our room had no informational booklet/notebook on what offerings the resort had. No phone numbers for any services, restaurant, spa, etc. Wifi is horrible. Free 1 hr/day in lobby with option to buy more. We bought more and it was horrible, continually cutting off mid email or text. Not worth the price. The Hibachi restaurant was fabulous but after a less than satisfactory meal at the Arubian Seafood restaurant, we choose to eat off site after that. There are so many great restaurants within walking distance and Aruba is so safe. The pool is free form with a waterfall and 2 hot tubs. Great area around the pool but like most resorts you have to get up early and grab a chaise. The beach is also first come first serve, but fabulous! There is a great paved path that goes along the beach by all of the hotels. Great for morning walks or walk down for coffee or ice cream. We came for rest, relaxation, sun, and for that we were very satisfied. The fine details need to be worked out since Barcelo took ownership of Occidental. They need better customer service right at the front door. That is one's first impression and theirs is lack luster.

    “Good hotel, Awesome beach”

Good all-inclusive hotel in the midst of one of the world best beaches. W enjoyed our stay primarily due to great weather & water on the beach. Hotel provided comfortable accommodations & decent service, still a few steps below it's own high standards (we were in Barcelo Maya a few years ago). Buffet food was boring, with limited amounts of fruits and no berries whatsoever. Drinks were primarily local, cocktails made from concentrate, not fresh fruits unlike Mexico. No kids pool, slides, etc. Overall, good option for first-time visit to Aruba.

    “Awesome family vacation ”

We have been here before when it was the Occidental. We loved it then and now. I do wish there were more things for my ten and eight year old boys to do. A game room would be perfect. We loved the Kyoto restaurant hibachi and ate there twice. Great service and food at Kyoto. Italian was good and the buffet is always a good option. Hotel pool and pool bar is the best!

Dear Carrie C, Thank you for taking the time and sharing your experience with us. We are very happy to read that you had an awesome family vacation. However, we are sad to read that the kids did not find much to do. I am glad to inform you that our Barcy Club for the young ones (age 4-12 year) has tons of activities every day from 9:00 to 17:00 for every one including games. Once more thank you very much and we look forward to hosting you and your family again soon. Warm regards, Sowfi Maduro / Quality Coordinator
