“Arrived very excited. Left very disappointed.”

We've stayed at Barcelo before in Gran Canaria and Fuerteventura and were looking at Corralejo as a future trip but not after this. We booked mainly because of our previous experiences - we know it's not the cheapest option but the service we have received previously has been excellent and as a brand hotel we expected that to be replicated. How wrong we were... Let's go with the positives. Location is good - just round the corner from the train station and close to shops and the Binnenaster lake. No problems there. Room - very nice but you expect that at over £100 per night. As per my previous comments, we knew what we expected and don't mind paying for quality especially as this was a birthday treat. Bed was lovely and comfy, shower adjacent to the bed was new to us but liked it so all in all a great room. Staff - Reception very friendly upon arrival but as our visit went on the attention seemed to wain - grumbled 'Good morning / evening' on occasions but not with any sincererity it seemed. Housekeeping staff seemed very friendly though. The bad bits - stayed Sun - Tues in the 2nd week of March. After reception there is a seating area with a lovely flame effect fire. Impressive. Moving further on to the bar - disgraceful. The seating is akin to a works canteen at best. It just looks horrendous and not comfortable at all. Random (dirty) lampshades don't add to the effect, just drags it down more. So much so that we ordered drinks one night and decided to move back to the seating area by reception as we thought that would be better. So we sat by the big table which had someone's left over plate with residual food on it presuming it would be cleared. Also noticed other tables in the 'bar' with similar items on them waiting to be cleared. The table we were sitting at adjacent to reception was also full of smears and needed a good wipe. So we sat and waited for this to happen. And waited. And waited. 4 reception staff busy doing whatever - 2 bar staff obviously 'busy' with other things. One was so engrossed talking to his male friend at the bar that he obviously seemed to feel that laughing with him and sharing mobile phone messages was more important than looking after the guests. We were there a good hour and when we left the dirty plate was still there (and similar on the other tables) and the table still sticky and full of stains. On our return to the hotel on the last night of our stay we called at the bar again for a drink. Vodka and orange and a white wine. 24.50 Euros. Really ? Yes, hotels charge premium prices and I expect that but that's just ridiculous. I really don't see Tripadvisor as a tool to be critical to any organisation but as a help to fellow travellers as I hope my previous reviews demonstrate. However - with the previous experience I have had with the Barcelo brand (excellent) this visit left us so disappointed as we had booked mainly because of the brand hence feel so let down. As such, unfortunately we will be looking elsewhere for a hotel provider for our next city / Spanish break. We don't expect the world but we expect standards to be maintained when paying good money and Barcelo Hamburg was so disappointing. And I've rated poor under duress - my partner was adamant the rating should be terrible.

Dear Mr. Tarndy, I would firstly like to thank you for taking your time writing a review in reference to your stay and sharing your thoughts on the matter with us. I ensure you your feedback is for us as a team and as a hotel chain very valuable. Your feedback is our tool to measure the guests satisfaction of the hotel and to detect our potential improvement points. Only with the input of guests like you we are able to involve and improve. So once again, thank you for helping us. Secondly, we would like to express our most sincere apologies to you. We regret that the result of your visit in our house was not satisfactory and that you couldn´t enjoy it as much as we would have like you to. Our main goal as hosts is to make our guests feel comfortable and welcomed. We are proud of our Spanish culture and aim to reflect it also on the way we treat our guests, with ease and anticipating their needs in a very natural way. In your visit we clearly didn´t manage to translate this philosophy and I would like you to know that this doesn´t live up to our standards. Unfortunately, with the change of weather we had several last minute sick leaves on those dates, all of them affecting the service team. Despite of reacting fast and being able to cover somehow the shifts, it was of course not ideal and all of it affected the service standards. I don´t want to give you any excuses, I know this is not your problem, but I think you deserve a proper explanation. Mr. Tarndy, it would be a shame if you´d lose your trust on Barceló because of this one experience, please let me invite you back to our house as we would like to win your confidence back. Remaining at your disposal. Kindest regards, Carlene García Ehrhardt Asst. General Manager

    “Good location and service, however...”

This hotel has a pretty good location. Approx about 10mins walk from the HBF. 5 mins to the shopping district. However, When I checked in, there was a glitch. Said that the 2 rooms that I have booked are on a different floor because it was booked under 2 separate names. (I did do under 1 booking for 2 rooms) Then again, said they could not do anything as the hotel is fully booked. Felt that this couldve been better managed. They gave you welcome drinks and wifi. The room is spacious. Bathing area is big and separates itself from the toilet area. Huge beds, many pillows (very rare in Germany). Would recommend it but if are travelling in a group, specify you are together or get rooms on separate floors. -.-

    “Nice hotel”

Stayed here for 1 night in March. Centrally located in the Altstadt, very close to the train station and the shopping areas. Room was spotless with a comfortable. Has one of those glass walls between the shower and bedroom, which I find kinda weird but is common enough in north Europe and particularly Scandinavia. Aircon was really good, very quiet and kept the room temp steady. Didn't have the breakfast there as €25 is a bit ritzy for a continental breakfast. Overall a decent place to stay.

Dear Culchiem, I would like to thank you for choosing us for your stay in Hamburg and for taking your time writing this review. We take your comments very seriously and are thankful for your input. Sharing your thoughts on your stay with us are you helping us to get to know ourselfes better from the view of our guests. I am very happy you enjoyed our central location near the old town and found our B-Rooms comfortable and spotless. As for the bathroom concept, as you mentioned, all rooms share the open bathroom concept, of course with a separated WC, with either the Rain-Shower on the middle of the room (Superior rooms) or with a built-in Rain-Shower and the basin separating the room (Deluxe and Suites). If you like to have more privacy while showering, I recomend this last categories. The Deluxe Junior Suite also has a bathtub. This open bathroom concept allows the room to use the natural light to the full potential making the space brighter. I certainly hope you had a wonderful time at Barceló Hamburg and would love to welcome you back any time soon. With kindest regards, Carlene García Asst. General Manager

“Clean, modern hotel very handy for man railway station, old town, shops, restaurants, etc.”

Our room was unusual; the washing/shaving sink was in the middle of the room, and the toilet had its own door (thank goodness) but seemed a part of the room and not a part of any en-suite arrangement. The shower cubicle was roomy but the shower head was one of those flat discs that is fixed above your head, so unless you have a water-tight helmet you must wash your hair whether you want to or not! Room was clean and spacious enough for two adults. Twin beds were comfortable. When we arrived the room was swelteringly hot. Air-conditioning control is not particularly intuitive, and seemed to have little effect on the room temperature - until we discovered that there is also underfloor heating, with another unintuitive and hard to find control that was not at all obvious what it was. It would have helped in there had been some notification of this. Breakfast is extra: we didn't try it but am told by another family member that it is excellent. Nor did we try the restaurant, which seemed expensive according to the menu. Would stay here again, despite the bathroom arrangement.

    “My favorite”

I'm very often staying at the Barcelo in Hamburg on business trips. I have stayed in other hotels close by, or at hotels which people could consider fancier, however this is the hotel of my choice. The location is great, rooms are clean and comfortable, the staff is always friendly and willing to assist. Special thanks to Manolo and Denis from the bar, they do know how to mix a perfect gin & tonic and make you feel at home.
