“Nice, but was not blown away”

I really wanted to love this hotel, but it was a miss on a few things. It is approximately 45 minutes from the Cancun airport. Not a bad drive, but I would want to be in a comfortable van service. The hotel can recommend a great company for you to book. It was approximately $72 both ways. Check in was an easy process. They have someone who can take your bags to your room, which is nice since once you leave the registration area, you have to go down stairs to get to the rooms. The rooms are nice, but not spectacular. I hardly spent any time in my room, so there is that to consider. My room was very smelly of mold, which I find is a 50/50 thing in tropical climates (I'm not sure what the hotels that can keep this smell out do differently from the rest). I did not have a room with a balcony or a view. Nice large bed, but really noisy ceiling fan. I could not have it run at night like I wanted because it kept clanging. And, I can usually sleep through anything. Large tub and nice shower, although the water in the shower would vacillate between hot and cold during the entire shower. You have a concierge available in your building. They will plan out dinners for you and book spa visits and many other things that you may need. The chairs by the pool were always full, and taken early. Even though they have signs all over the place about saving chairs, they allowed people to save their seats early. Then randomly, they would remove someone's belongings if the chairs were saved for a long period with no one showing up. While I appreciate the removal of items if no one showed, it did seem that was really no clear guidelines on how this worked (someone's stuff was moved after 15 minutes, another after 2 hours). You can get bikes to ride into town, which is great. I would highly recommend this experience. There are vendors on the beach that offer fishing, snorkeling, and parasailing. I would recommend this as well. The water is choppy, so if your stomach is weak on a boat, I would advise against this. For the restaurants, you have lots of options. The Grill offers breakfast and lunch. You can get custom omelettes but otherwise, they have a buffet. Spices offers a full breakfast menu which is very good. The Grill at lunch is blah. Cheap resort food. Spices offers a better lunch menu. I ate dinner in Spice's one evening. Excellent food, but our dessert was never brought after waiting 30 minutes. I also ate at Las Ventanas, and the food was good, and the presentation is very arty. Note: they are have required attire in these restaurants. I planned a President's Club event here. While I was disappointed with some small things, my group had a fantastic time. Some things that made it difficult was the language barrier. Communicating on email with the hotel was difficult and frustrating. And, on site, they are also bad with English. When I checked out of the hotel, the customer service agent said to me "thank you for your stay and cancelling your reservation". Also, the hotel never made me away of the dress code for restaurants. While I travel often and appreciate that this can be in place in some places, I have also stayed at some spectacular luxury resorts where a dress code does not exist. Since I did not know about the dress code, I was not able to prepare my guests appropriately. This became an issue as Las Venatanas, where I had to send a guest to his room to try to find a collared top. And the restaurant was nearly empty and they were very strong about the dress code. The planner from the hotel should have advised me on this. The spa is very nice and they offer lots of specials. Small space but great staff. The pool staff is OK, even better if you tip them. The grounds are beautiful, the water is gorgeous, and the beach is spectacular. I would definitely come back to Playa, but not sure I would stay here again. It was nice, but a long way to go to not completely love it.

    “Heaven on Earth”

The Royal Hideaway is about as close to perfection as I have experienced so far in my vacation travels! It started with my red carpet arrival and only got better throughout my five day stay. Prior to my visit, I was sent a questionnaire regarding my room preferences. I have to admit I was pleasantly surprised that my pillow, mini-bar, and room floor selections were ready for my arrival! The L'Occitane toiletries were also an added bonus. What nice touches! The resort itself is small (only 200 rooms) but it is spread out on a beautiful piece of property that is exceptionally maintained. Rooms are located in a number of 2 and 3-storey villas. Most of the rooms have a garden view but don’t let that disappoint you. The vision of palm trees, fountains and lush vegetation is magnificent! There are lots of nooks and crannies to escape to if you'd like a break from the main pool area. The main pool area however, is divine. There are two pools, one of which is an infinity that overlooks the beach. Although the temperatures of the water itself could definitely be raised several notches, you won't find a better view. The beach is also one of the best I have ever seen. The sand is white, silky to walk on and the ocean is postcard perfect, Windex blue. I don't think I have the words to describe how absolutely breathtaking it is. If you’re looking to participate in a million activities throughout the day, this is not the place for you. The atmosphere is laid-back and relatively quiet. Stretching, pool aerobics, ping pong and sushi making classes were offered but they didn’t seem to have the greatest attendance. Music was played poolside but it was more of a muzak style. They did change it up for pool aerobics though! In the evening, the outdoor bar Allegria had entertainment but it was over by 11:00 p.m. Part of a great trip for me is the assortment of things to eat and drink. I have to say this resort has nailed it in terms of variety and quality. Most of the food is made to order and you won’t find many things that are mass produced and kept under warmers like at other resorts. Everything that I ordered was nicely presented and of excellent quality (including snacks at the pool). The a la carte restaurants are on par with any fine dining restaurants you will find at home. If you’d like a break from the sun, I recommend trying ‘high tea’ that is served daily from 4:00-5:30 p.m. Service is something that can make or break a hotel. Simply put, the staff at the Royal Hideaway is wonderful! From the pool attendants who helped arrange towels and seating, to the staff that provided food and beverage service, everyone I encountered was friendly, warm and focused on high levels of service. They should be commended for the amazing job they do each and every day! I’d like to say a special thank-you and shout out to: Pool attendants: Ricardo, Misrael Entertainment: John The Deck/Grill: Juan Azia: Lorenzo, Roberto Housekeeping: Villa 25 There are very few things that I can find fault with at this resort. I guess if I had to pick something I would say the pool temperatures were a little on the cold side. I don’t think I am alone in saying this as they were virtually empty throughout my visit. Especially for those coming from cold countries in the winter months, management, please turn it up! To sum it up: if you are looking to be pampered in a luxurious, tranquil, intimate environment, run and book this place. You won't be disappointed! I can’t recommend it enough and I will definitely be back!

    “Beautiful, low key resort”

The room was great. Very comfortable bed, big bathroom. Loved the shower. Ask for a room with a beach/pool view. The pool was lovely, but was a little cold. (we were there in March). Service is outstanding. Food was good. There are 6 restaurants on the property that require dinner reservations. All our reservations were made for 9:30pm...way too late for us to eat, so we had to ask for earlier ones. The only con is that there is nothing to do at night. There was a dinner show that we missed because we were not told about them. Be sure to ask your concierge about the shows. Ours did not tell us. We found out about it the next day at the pool. Bummer. There is a bar with horn player, but the bar closes at about 9pm??? Who closes a bar that early??? The resort was great for relaxation, but we had to take a taxi to the Fifth Avenue district for shopping, vendors, entertainment, etc. That was the fun place to be. It was nice, however, to come back to the peaceful resort after that.

    “Quiet and Relaxing!”

This was exactly what we were looking for in a hotel! The resort grounds are absolutely beautiful and incredibly quiet. The food was excellent and the service was top notch at all the restaurants. The staff all goes above and beyond here; there was an anniversary within our group and the concierge had organized a surprise cake to be delivered on our final night there. The beach and pools were phenomenal. I highly recommend this resort if you are looking for somewhere to unwind and relax!

    “Wonderful time”

Such s great visit! Beautiful room, beach, location, service and food. No negatives at all. It was a quiet resort, but that was what we wanted. Had a great massage in the spa. All the restaurants were good but our favorite was the Italian restaurant, Palazzo. All in all the Royal Hideaway is a great value and we hope to be back. The entire resort staff works tirelessly to make each guest's vacation perfect and I hope all guests tip them for their hard work!!
