“Not a family oriented resort ”

My husband and I recently stayed there for 5 nights with our four kids and my parents. The resort is modern, nice and clean, as well as, friendly staff. However, much smaller than other resorts we've stayed at in Mexico. The buffet is very small and very limited on choices. Breakfast, lunch and dinner choices were very repetitive. Our waiter, ERIK, was AWESOME! He was very attentive and always on point with our drinks and cleanup. He even brought our plates to the table when he saw us walking back from the buffet. He made breakfast and lunch time very enjoyable. We made reservations at a few sit down restaurants but the times were very limited. It was either too early to too late. The nightly entertainment was ok. It was a lot of dancing. Our rooms had a partial ocean view overlooking the pool; no balcony & it felt very tight. The pool area was nice but no swim up bar and water was super cold. Only one regular and a shallow depth pool. There was one other pool that was exclusive to royal members only. The beach was very nice. We enjoyed it the most. Last but not least, there were mostly senior citizens at this resort. Not very family oriented to a younger family with kids ranging in age from 2-14 years. If given the choice, we would most likely not return.

“Occidental Grand Nuevo Vallarta. Sat Feb 4 -Sat Feb 18, 2017”

First Club Rooms. Arrived in the evening. Buffet stays open until 10:30pm. Nice room. A bowl of fruit, a safe, lots of hangers and drawers, a bar fridge, beer and water, 4 bottles of booze and coffee maker. First Club/Royal Club pool. Augustin the bartender was fantastic. Los Olivos - Italian and Mediterranean ala carte. Great presentation. Great food. Tiramisu for dessert. Dress code is in effect. Had most lunches at Las Haciendas which is a snack bar during day. Lots of choices. Typical snack food. The buffet is not overly large but the layout is effective. Quick to refill a tray. Many food options at every meal. Mexican ala carte Las Haciendas for dinner. Good food. Great service. Have vanilla ice cream with Kahlua for dessert. Casual dress is allowed. Japanese ala carte called Teppanyaki (?). Restaurant is new. Ask for the correct side when reserving. One side is only sushi and seafood. The other side is Japanese “show” steak house. Dress code is in effect. The security staff are excellent. Always alert and help other staff whenever they can. They pick up after lazy guests too !! If you come to this Occidental on a tour package, you can upgrade to their hybrid Royal Club for about $40 US a day per person. Had dinner at the Royal Club. Great view of the resort and Bahia de Banderas. Great sunsets. Great food presentation and it tasted wonderful. Raphael made a show of Spanish Coffee. The Spa - massage was fantastic. The beach is wonderful. You can walk for miles. Not many vendors. Always a breeze starting late in the morning - until sunset. Sunsets are incredible. Resort grounds are very clean and well groomed. There was some entertainment every night. The Mexican folklorico presentations were wonderful. The First Club had a private area on the beach with lounge chairs and beds. The First Club itself is clean and well run. It is physically smaller than many other First Clubs. At about 5 o’clock it was jammed. Comments. • When you get your reservation slip for the ala cartes, please read the rules. Los Olivos and Teppanyaki have a dress code. • Few rooms have balconies. Some ground level rooms with private patios. • Took a taxi to and from old town Puerto Vallarta. Good day. • Visited the mall across the street. A bit pricey but you are a captive audience. • The market in the mall does not accept US dollars. Get pesos to shop. There is an ATM at the mall entrance to the market. The other stores will take US.

    “2nd stay, questionable return”

This was our second stay here. We really like the smaller size and the great beach! However, this time we upgraded to the royal level and requested a room on the 1st floor. We were told the resort was full, but if we came back on Monday, three days later, they would have a room for us. In the meantime, we didn't even get a royal level room. We got 2 queen beds pushed together with a memory foam over the crack in the middle. When we went back on Monday, we were told they would work on getting us another room. After two more days of a total run-a-round, the girl on the 7th floor told us she had a room reserved for us and to come back in 2 hours to exchange keys. When we got back, we were told that room was no longer available, that the people in there had a late checkout. This was a total lie because we went down to that room and talked to the people that were just moving into that room. They requested a room change that morning and got it right away. We eventually did get a 1st floor room, but not before wasting a ton of time trying to get it. We really liked this resort and had plans to return here, but sure didn't appreciate being lied to and all the hassle we had to go through to change rooms, especially paying extra for royal level. Very disappointing!

    “3rd Stay; 2nd Review - A Few Insights”

We were here for 10 days at the end of January. I did not write a review about last year's visit, but this time a few things have changed. We requested, 3 times, for a room on the 4th, 5th or 6th floor on the south side. I sent an email approximately 10 days before we left; it went unheeded. I sent a 2nd email; received an answer that said "no problema" with our request. The original request was sent with the reservations. When we were checked in we were assigned to a 1st floor room, somewhat near the theatre. We explained we were returning guest for the 3rd year, in a row and requested a higher floor on the south side. We were given two other choices, one on the 4th floor or one on the 5th floor. Neither on the south side. We took the 5th floor room, which had an ocean view AND looked over the buffet dining room. The woman who checked us in initially was helpful, but not friendly. Still checking-in: We were told they'd send our luggage up. Meanwhile we went to the room, then went down to the beach for about 1.5 hours. Came up to find our luggage had not been sent up. We went down to the lobby where both our suitcases sat on a luggage carrier. We took them up ourselves. We had read that they had enclosed the buffet dining area with glass. At night, it was stuffy, as the A/C was not working at full capacity. Such a shame; the buffet dining room had been very pleasant w/o the glass. I wish they had installed sliding windows. Would have been nice to have the option of fresh air during the cooler months. I thought the food was good. Lots of fish was offered, including salmon, roast turkey, prime rib, pork, ham and the usual assortment of chicken, beef and pork steam table dishes. The ongoing problem with some of the food being barely warm has not been solved. There's also lots of salad and fixings, both at lunch and dinner. The "health" juices offered in the morning are great. They also have fresh donuts every morning and a daily selection of ice cream and of course Mexican ice cream is the best! I have to send kudos out to the servers. Gerardo, Manuel and Fernando were very attentive at both lunch and dinner. Daniel, at dinner, was very conscientious. Upon observation, after a few days, we decided that the resort seem to be short staffed, either by circumstance or design, I don't know. Those guys, at night, really worked their butts off. The only one that didn't seem to work very was hard was the host Isreal. He was usually MIA or chatting up the female host, who DID work. One day, we tried eating at the beach restaurant for lunch. There were only 2 servers. We never did get water or menus. We left and went to the buffet. Not the servers fault. We still love the beach here, tho, their palm trees seem only to be sustaining and NOT thriving. There were a lot of dead branches and the trees themselves looked straggly. For great palm trees, check out their neighbors directly to the south: full thriving trees, with lots of different sizes that optimized shade. On our 2 previous vacations here, we never had a problem with getting beach chairs in the area we preferred. No towel games. But now the towel game is in full force, not the resorts fault. We didn't play for 3 full days, but on the 4th morning, too many chairs had towels with no people in or around them. Toward the end of our stay we were coming down, as early as 7:15. Ridiculous..... Part of the problem was there were hardly any people on the Royal Club/First Club Beach. We'd go for a walk to see, maybe, 4-5 people on that side of the beach. Less trees on that side... We also were not happy that the adult pool that used to be for all is now just for Royal Club members and their kids. This was what I called the "Zen" pool. We were never acknowledged as returning guests. Last year, we were given a room on the 6th floor, given a little basket of candy and strawberries. I think all their effort is going to Royal Club members and not to us "commoners". I will say that somebody, we don't know who, made a reservation for us at the Japanese restaurant and left the receipt in our room. That was a nice touch and we did enjoy the food there. We sat at a giant hibachi and watched the chef prepare our meals, like a Benihana restaurant. We did bring extra washcloths with us, as we knew we wouldn't be getting them everyday. And that's Ok. We were prepared. We seldom had wifi problems, but the TV was snowy on all the stations. An FYI, you can get American broadcast stations CBS, ABC and NBC on channels 88, 86 and 82 respectively. (Broadcast from NYC). I don't know what it was, but something was missing. Maybe it was the fantastic Jennifer M. that we met as a Guest Relations rep and then was promoted to Royal Club or Mario, the very friendly reservations manager. Or maybe it was that the resort was at 87% -93% capacity. Thinking hard about going back!

“Spent the entire first 24 hours working things out”

When we first arrived we were given room keys and when we opened our room found it already occupied... then were given a room with two double beds as opposed to our requested king bed. When we arrived the next day to request our keys for a new room we found ourselves in a long line of people moving rooms! Service at pool and in restaurants not up to par also. Now we sit almost 24 hours after our arrival waiting for our luggage to arrive. Not positive we would stay here again.
