    “Nice hotel ”

Just returned from a 7 night stay at this hotel with another couple. I booked 2 superior bungalows bed and breakfast in February through On the Beach and had double checked it was 2 bungalows not 1 with 2 bedrooms and this was confirmed to me. On arriving at the hotel check in wasn't very smooth - we got told we basically had 1 bungalow and given the opportunity to go look at it, luckily it was just across the road so we found it quickly. We weren't overly impressed and felt quite annoyed as we obviously paid for 2 bungalows so we headed back to reception and they offered to upgrade us to half board for free. I did ask what our options were as we weren't happy and he told us we would have to stay there for one night then he could move us the next day but no guarantee we would be close to each other. 5 mins later all of a sudden he could upgrade us to a premium suite which had 2 bed rooms but only one bathroom. We went to look at this room in block 5 and it was miles nicer with huge balcony and sea view. I did point out that it was still not 2 rooms so we got half board for free and a premium room. I kind of think that had his manager not been around we would've been stuck in that one room we didn't like as we kept getting told there were no other rooms available - in block 5 we also noticed we had no neighbours for the majority of the week so how he could say all the other rooms were taken in don't know! Basically someone messed up with our booking! Luckily we all get on well so sharing wasn't too much of an issue apart from 4 adults using one bathroom where no doors lock so we almost had to announce to one another when we were going for a shower or to use the loo. There is only 1 mirror in this full suite and that's in the bathroom so this made getting 4 people ready to go out a bit tricky especially after the shower had been on for a while as it appears our extractor fan didn't work. One bedroom had 2 singles shoved together and the other had one huge bed, we all slept quite well however my partner and I had the bedroom at the balcony and could hear the noise from the beach works going on in the morning and on the Friday night (our last night) they started work just before midnight too for a few hours!! Our room was in a good location - close enough to reception, close to a pool, not even 5mins off the beach and close to the buffet restaurant. Unlike some other guests we spoke to we didn't have much problems with insects, the odd ants in the room but that's manageable ourselves. We had fairly good wifi at all times of day and night from our room too. Food was average, quite a lot to pick from and salad was quite nice. Although we had been upgraded to half board we only ate lunch a couple of times here so didn't make full use of our "compensation" So in general, good points: *We ended up with a huge balcony with sun beds plus 2 couches and table *Both bedrooms had a TV plus one in living area *Grounds are quite clean and our room was spotless *Central location (Block 5) *Clean dining area *Pool was clean *Supermarket on site is reasonably priced *Interactive menu and entertainment schedule at restaurant was handy *Plenty sunbeds around the pool Bad points: *Tiles around the pool get very hot to walk on with bare feet even just into or out the pool *Lack of mirrors in premium suite *Security Gates around the hotel were constantly left open *Pools we used were very salty *Can't play pool/air hockey at night *Meat sometimes undercooked in buffet restaurant *Glasses used at breakfast time had a bad odour to them *1 safe between 4 of us was a bit of a struggle *Stairways poorly little - I almost fell down them one night luckily I was holding on to my partner! In general we had a nice stay but my partner and I stayed at the Barcelo next door previously and both agree that we prefer that one.

    “Mixed feelings ”

My partner and I have just returned after a lovely week away. We have stayed at the Barcello 3 times now and I found this time to be disappointing. Don't get me wrong the staff have never been the friendliest bunch but this time I found them to be rude and unhelpful. The check in procedure is like pulling teeth! I've never had to provide a booking print out for Travel republic EVER but the staff were very persistent for us to provide this which meant having to access my emails and try to get a copy all very old school especially as they had our details on the system. My biggest complaint is that both big pools have loud music being blasted all day (club music) I've just recently came back from Ibiza where you expect that there but from such a chilled resort does the music have to be so loud? I spoke to many other couples and families about this who all said the same thing. It isn't necessary to have two pools with such a party atmosphere. It was impossible to avoid it as we could even hear it on the beach where other people guests and non guests were trying to read or listen to their own music with great difficulty. We stayed in block 3 which we found lovely. One occasion we tried out the pool near to this block to save another day of such noise from the large pool. There was only two beds left with an umbrella and unfortunately this was near to the speaker which once again was blasting some sort of awful music. I simply asked one of the entertainment team if they could turn it down just a little. He was probably one of the rudest people I have ever had the displeasure of speaking to. He replied to me and said "move somewhere else then" after this I was shocked I explained that this was the last beds with an umbrella he then tutted at me and made a gesture to say he was not bothered. Such a shame as we always found the entertainment team to be pleasant. After this it left a bad taste for us and spent all of our time on the beach along with other guests who also were avoiding this. It's a shame due to this the hotel is missing out on business as we would of been purchasing drinks and food daily. To leave it on a positive note the rooms were immaculate and lovely and would highly recommend area 3 and the pool near the pizzeria restaurant (peaceful and relaxing) I'd like to hope if we we're to return to the resort for a forth time that there will be positive changes to the resort and able to please all guests.

    “Book elsewhere!”

After finally arriving we were greeted at reception by the only friendly staff member this resort appears to have. We were given a map of our area (block 3) and a brief description of how to get there, which proved difficult given that by the time we started looking for our bungalow it was pitch black. We arrived quite late however was advised by the receptionist that we could go over to the restaurant and leave our luggage in reception in their (unlocked) storage room. Upon arrival at our bungalow, which took us quite some time to find, we noticed that it was in fact a block of four apartments split into 'bungalows'. Be aware when booking that you may have to climb a flight of stairs in order to reach your 'bungalow'. Once inside we noticed that the decor was quite dated and that there appeared to be chunks missing from some parts of the wall. There are cooking facilities, however I'm not sure where you would prepare your food as the sink and hob consume the majority of the work surface. Our bathroom contained mold and parts of the ceiling were hanging loose, which was a result of there being no extraction fan in the bathroom. We also had a couple of cockroaches in our bungalow crawling all over the furniture throughout our stay.. Beware that if you book half board basis that this does not include any drinks with your evening meal! We found this out on the second night as a waitress came over and pointed at our half full glasses and said '2 cokes'. We assumed she was referring to the drinks we had in hand however a few moments later she appeared with two glasses of coke and proceeded to add these to our bill. It was only then that she explained any drinks were for fully inclusive members only. We did not request these drinks however we still had to pay €5 for two flat, watery cokes. Despite paying a considerable amount for half board, I was astounded that we were having to pay for soft drinks to accompany our evening meal. The food in the restaurant leaves a lot to be desired. It is bland and very repetitive. On several occasions I found some food to be stale and of poor quality. We decided to eat elsewhere most days as the options in the buffet restaurant were not particularly appealing. We also ordered some chips from one of the pool side bars as a snack one afternoon. These cost €3 each and were a complete waste of money as they were inedible. Stale, chewy and cold, even the vinegar like ketchup couldn't mask the disgusting taste. Even if you book full board you are limited as to where you can eat, only the main buffet restaurant is included within the price, the rest of the restaurants and bars are available at discounted prices. The swimming pools are saltwater pools and could do with some TLC. We visited the pool in block 3 and the pool tiles felt slimey to touch and there was a severe build up of algae in between the tiles all over the pool. There were plenty of pool loungers so there's no need to rush and reserve them with a towel each morning. There are also plenty of members of staff around encouraging you to take part in activities through out the day if that's you're kinda thing to do on holiday. The loud music from across the road which plays all day and night was also left out of our booking description funnily enough. If you enjoy listening to bad karaoke then be sure to request a bungalow in block 3. The walls are also paper thin, so much so that you can hear conversations and the tv from next door and the excessive furniture re-shuffling from neighbours upstairs. We struggled to find any positives for this resort and would recommend you book elsewhere. Considering this is meant to be a 4 star resort the feeling you get once inside is that of a mediocre 2 star resort.

Dear guest, Although we are quite surprised and dismayed by the content of your review regarding your holiday at our Barceló Castillo Beach Resort, please rest assured that your comments have been taken on board and revised by the entire Management team, however we would like to take this opportunity to clarify certain aspects of your review as a simple matter of exactness of the information reported. Please accept our sincerest apologies for the imperfections you describe in your review, all rooms reserved for new arrivals are per standard double checked by our head of housekeeping to ensure that everything is functional and spotless for our guests, clearly we were not performing to our usual standard on this occasion and we regret not being immediately informed at reception so as to be able to intervene in no time for you to fully enjoy your stay in our hotel, for a future occasion, please do not hesitate to contact the reception desk for anything you may need, the team will do its utmost to find an immediate solution for you. Thorough cleaning is an absolute must for Barceló and we follow very strict protocols to guarantee satisfying results regarding hygiene and cleanliness in our hotels. Moreover we have taken good note of your remarks related to the presence of cockroaches within our grounds; given the climatology of Fuerteventura and its geographical position, depending on the humidity and heat, the presence of insects in any hotel, business or private house is unavoidable, nevertheless we have in place a specific preventive pest control plan as well as regular treatments to avoid their presence in the hotel.  We are sorry to read that apparently you were not properly informed about your Half Board type of meal plan not including drinks at dinner although this information is reported both on our own website and the travel agents' we collaborate with, we encourage you for a future occasion to contact our call center from where our agents will give you all the relevant information on the hotel of your choice to make sure you book the services that best meet your holiday needs and wishes. Regarding our pools, we deeply regret your disappointment however we would like to take the opportunity to point out that salt water pools do not use any significant chemicals, chlorine being a byproduct that of the salt we add to the water, so chlorine is still present in the water, however the levels are much lower and makes them safer for children and pregnant women because there are far less damaging chemicals being added to the water. We have taken good note of your comments on the music by the pool and sincerely lament the disturbances caused and will not fail to share your comments with our head of entertainment for information and further revision, at Barceló we believe that leisure and sport activities are part of the real holiday feeling but also understand that not all guests are willing to take part into our entertainment program therefore we always ensure that an area of the hotel remains noise free for those guests who prefer to relax and read. Please be assured that your comments will be taken into serious consideration and that they will help us to improve our services. Once again, thank you for your time and despite the issues you have raised following your stay, we hope that Barceló will remain an option for your next holiday and that we will have the opportunity to restore your faith in our company in the near future. Kind regards, Alirio Pérez General Manager
