    “Winter Sun”

We enjoyed a week at the Occidental Jandia Royal Level last week. It is situated at the northern end of Jandia. Shopping centre (Ventura) below the hotel. The hotel has a nice sea view ( easterly aspect). Large hotel complex set on a hillside.Terraced. We tended to stay in the Royal level as it was superior to the rest of the hotel in so many ways.We upgraded to all inclusive as it was very good value for money. The food was fresh and of good quality (European), lots of drinks to chose from. Cocktails available too and freshly made by the barmen at the Atlantico Bar or the Green Bar. Nice pool area. Very peaceful. The sunbeds are cushioned and clean. Bedrooms are a little jaded and lighting is poor in the bathroom. There is a hairdryer (in the bathroom), and a mini fridge (drinks included), plus tea/ coffee making facilities. There is a turn-down service every evening with chocolate truffles and water left by the beds.A nice touch. The beds are comfortable apart from the plastic under-sheet which I had to remove as it made the bed unbearably hot. Also why have duvets in a hot country? It cooled down at night and air conditioning was not really needed. We enjoyed the restaurants and bars at the Royal level. The spa is good too.Gym there too. Not much nightlife at the Royal level, just a nice keyboard player (Nick) a few nights a week. No dancing! In any case I would recommend this hotel. It exceeded my expectations.

    “Very good...so nearly great.”

This was a our second visit this year, both times for 1 week.Without going into minor details here are out thoughts. This is a very nice resort and most enjoyable for both the weeks we have spent here The Royal Level pool areas are very chilled relaxing spaces with attentive staff at the bars, you can hear some noise from the family areas below but we did not find it intrusive.Towels are provided and the beds are plentiful and of excellent quality. The staff are very friendly and courteous almost without exception The rooms in the Royal Level are spacious and comfortable with very large comfortable beds. The Atlantico Restaurant is a very nice space and the quality and variety of the food is generally very good, breakfast is a very enjoyable experience. Room for improvement.. It has been said numerous times in previous reviews that the food in The Atlantico is not hot enough and we have to agree, particularly in the evening. The hot food area next to the chef does not have hot plates under the trays ,only heat lamps and it quite clearly is not sufficient to keep the food hot. This is a shame because the quality and variety is good. The selection of cold foods i would not fault. On a couple of occasions the Atlantico bar closed well before the stated time of 11pm, on one occasion at 10.15 when the pianist was halfway through his set? The entertainment (pianist) is very accomplished but the act a little dated and he appeared twice in 3 days doing more or less the same show. We were encouraged to reserve a table in the Patio Canario A la Carte restaurant and wish we had not bothered. The food appeared 'Ready Meal' quality and at best average.I would be very concerned by this as it does not reflect the high standard offering of The Royal Level. On reflection we consider this venue to offer excellent value for money and in some areas its so good that it highlights its own shortcomings

    “Almost excellent four star hotel”

+ The staff was extremely friendly throughout the hotel area. + Minimal amount of enterntainment. On the pool area it felt like being on a library, since you could really enjoy the calm atmosphetre. + Delicious, fresh and healthy food. + Car rental (Avis) with self service system worked very well. - Just a part of the hotel is truly ’adults only’. Sometimes the sound of a constant whistle blowing, shouting and crying from the larger pool area below was a bit of a turnoff. - ”Autenthic Finnish sauna” was far from being authentic. The temperature was really low (around 45 celsius), and throwing water to the stove didin’t even make a sound.

    “Pretty good”

The experience was largely good, with room for improvement in some areas. 'Royal' reception In theory a nice idea to have a separate reception for Royal Level guests, in practice it's a pain as there's only 1 member of staff. On arrival on our first day it was an hour before we could get to our room due to having to wait our turn for the Royal Receptionist to be free to take us through a ridiculously long check-in and induction process. When you've been travelling for 12 hours since 3 in the morning all you want to do is get into your room! Food and drink We largely ate in the poolside buffet restaurant and the food was consistently good. Wine and spirits all good, nice to see that premium brands were included at no extra cost. On our last night we decided to try the a la carte restaurant, we'd booked in the afternoon at the Royal reception, only to be told when we arrived for dinner that there was no record of our reservation. We were made to stand around for 20 minutes and received an apology in the end and went back to the buffet. Not impressed at that. The staff By and large the staff were excellent. The pool area Nice enough pools and furniture slightly spoiled only by the selfishness of people bagging loungers with towels then leaving them. The room We had a suite which was sizeable with a huge bed, nice bathroom, perhaps all a bit tired. Lighting too bright all round. Outside lighting The outside lighting is very lacking, particularly around the Royal terrace area, it's dangerous in some places. Branding The branding is all over the place, some areas and printed materials still say Barceló Jandia Club Premium or Barceló Royal Level, others Occidental Club Premium, they haven't completed the re-branding process to Occidental Royal Level properly. I'm at a loss as to why Barceló decided to re-brand the hotel as an Occidental anyway. Entertainment The entertainment in the Royal Level is minimal, they had a keyboard player, Nic Waysman, playing by the bar/pool a couple of nights, not really our cup of tea but I actually quite liked him. We had 2 TVs in our suite, one with a DVD player (but no sign of where you might get DVDs from). Conclusion Go back? Maybe not but would certainly try another Barceló all inclusive elsewhere on the strength of this stay. One tip I'd pass on to future guests is make sure you go with any medicines you might need, you can't even buy over the counter medicines in the hotel shop or nearby.
