    The resort and grounds are very beautiful. The rooms are very comfortable and I had a beautiful and peaceful view from my patio. One thing I really was pleased with, was the 24 hr property shuttle. The grounds are hilly and can curtail a lot of walking and if one has health issues the shuttle is constantly coming through by your area. If you need to get a shuttle quickly to get to lobby area, you can just ring the operator and they will send one quite quickly. The staff at the resort was very friendly and helpful. I don’t think the resort is super elegant if that’s what you are looking for, but if you are looking for a beautiful place to enjoy a peaceful vacation, I would certainly recommend this resort. The foods were a little lackluster, but I was always able to find something good to eat. I hope I am able to return in the future.

    “Raúl and a handful of staff are the reason we will return”

    Would like to send a huge shout out to the following employees that quickly turned around a few rough patches during our stay . Brian , Johnny , Julio who are bartenders at the lounge were excellent , personal and very genuine. Manuel ,David and Carlos professional ,hospitable and helpful. The two bartenders at the swim up bar are friendly and make you feel a part of the family right away . At the Premium Level Bar Wednesday Nov -18 working the morning shift gentlemen was incredibly thorough in recommending things to do at and around resort . I went with his suggestion to go kayaking at resort and it was one of my best memories . Shout out to Raúl who addressed the situation of us not having hot water as well as the lack of communication between air carrier and hotel . He seemed to care about our concerns and was empathetic to our inconveniences. As for the hotel it’s a small quiet resort which we loved . In saying this it may not suit personalities which are seeking a party crowd .Drinks were great and made with gusto , bartenders shined in being passionate about their jobs. Food is good ,I was happy with selection however could have more fresh fruit available . The Premier Lounge has hot food . My suggestion would be to have small appetizers rather than large pieces of chicken. Things such as a selection of cheese , fruit , bread .A mixture of sweet and savoury to go better with drinks . Spa - Wouldn’t recommend due to the poor service we received . We bought 2 couple massages .The first one was alright with the spa and whirlpool session being 10-15 minutes . Second one we were given about 3 minutes in sauna and few minutes in whirlpool which was on the lukewarm to cool side . This was not worth the money we paid . We had gone down to the beach and had 5 massages from the lady down at the beach this was much better service and less expense . I would have been happy to pay spa prices had services not been rushed . Walks - Every morning is walk on beach around 5 am when tide was high I’d take a walk past security by the trees leaving resort and go into some side trails . When tide was low I’d walk on the right hand side around by the volcanic rock .Highly recommend this but wear good shoes with grip. All in all I loved many of the staff members , the natural aspect of area and being surrounded by silence. One last thing I’m really disappointed in the lack of communication from the hotel . They lacked communication during our arrival with air carrier and coming back failed to reply to many emails I’ve sent . The emails were requesting who I could send a very positive review to each staff member that made our trip . I emailed Barcelo , Occidental as well as concierge service . The emails were given to me by travel agents who were visiting resort at same time . They also have the impression that communication isn’t the forte of resort . Despite the lack of care demonstrating with poor communication we will be back because of the staff . They deserve to be recognized . Its been a week since we have been back and have already recommended hotel several times because of staff members mentioned above , If you are looking for a quiet resort in the midst of magical beauty this is it . On a side note I’ve travelled to many places as I’ve been a flight attendant for 25 years . Occidental Papagayo is one of the very few resorts I’ve felt a strong desire to return to.

    “Great holiday, lovely people.”

    Sorry if this is a bit lengthy but I've tried to cover everything and to be honest. If you like Benidorm then this is not the place for you. The day tends to start and end early, there is a bar and a disco but things got quiet early on. I'm not a snob but I get a good idea of what a place is going to be like by doing a football shirt count at the bar, other than the odd basketball outfit it was mostly zero. I really wish the management would enforce the smart dress code for the a' la carte restaurants. Trainers and a basketball kit is not smart and it down grades the standard of the hotel. The hotel is on a hill and has a good beach when the tide is out but when the tide is in there isn't one. The breakfast was a bit basic but lunch and dinner at the buffet were fine. The a' la carte restaurants and staff were very good. The hotel and room were clean and well presented as were the two pools. Please note - The pools have trees around them so leaves will fall into them despite the staffs efforts! Trips can be booked from the hotel pool area and an an excellent ATV tour with Ramon of ATV Adventures found between the two pools. There is a 24hr buggy service to transport you round the complex should you need it. The gym has a selection of gym machines, a smith machine, two treadmills but no free weights. Kayaks are available free of charge. We found the staff to be very friendly. The waiter service around the pool was a bit hit and miss, sometimes there was one, other times there wasn't. In general we found the Hotel great, we want to go back next year.

    “Bad experience”

    I heard and saw a couple of bad reviews about the service towards the locals. I didn't believe it but I am very sad to say it is all true. If you are Costa Rican then just expect to be treated like you worth nothing. For foreign they'll give you a welcome cocktail plus a couple of brochures with info. And they will be super nice and polite. In our case the guy wasn't very helpful and the lady of Guest service was very rude to us. (Karen) If you are a frequent traveler you know that the first impression means a lot. I thought my mini vacation was ruined but we had a great time thanks to our Bartender Alexander and Christian Viales. They are amazing They saved our vacay The food was ok. The Chef needs to work hard on making the menu because the combination wasn't very good. Need extra care on the salads because I almost broke a tooth with a little stone. The french toast and Waffles were terrible. But I do need to congratulate the creator of the breads. So beautiful and tasty.I wanted to eat the whole thing. In general I liked the hotel, the rooms are great, the view is out of this world and they did a great job with the landscaping.

    “End of a wonderful tour at a poor hotel ”

    I had just finished a two week tour of the amazing Costa Rica and thought I would spoil myself at the end of the trip by staying here. I cannot recommend this hotel the staff at the hotel were in the main very rude and unhelpful except for the night receptionist and guest advisor. For an all inclusive they actively seem to avoid you so as to not have to give you anything and when you go to the bar to take a drink at the pool they seem annoyed. The fact that the WiFi has to be paid for and only works in reception or your room and this being the only hotel in Costa Rica I stayed in that actually charges for WiFi. The buffet is decent but nothing special there are other far better hotels for less money than this one and I would suggest you avoid this place. The second star is for the night receptionist who was the only decent member of staff in the place
