    “Beautiful Resort!!”

I recently visited the beautiful resort Occidental at Xcaret. The beach was beautiful and the service was exceptional. Our favorite restaurant was La Hacienda. Our waiter Victor was amazing. He was so attentive and went above and beyond to make our stay one to remember. Our last meal was one of the best dining experiences in my life. All the food was delicious and Victor made sure we were treated like Queens 👸🏽. I highly recommend staying at this resort and going to see Victor at La Hacienda.

“Mixed review, Some good, some bad. don't rate as a 5*”

My review is very mixed, there is really great points about this hotel and also some really not so great points. Unfortunately, I wouldn't return to this resort, I wouldn't recommend it either.   I ended up ill with a sickness bug, for 8-9 days of our holiday after eating at the beach buffet restaurant. $162 to the doctor and needed antibiotics.   The staff work extremely hard and such long days! They do a great job, but I do think the it needs more staff for such a big resort. I wouldn't say you get the service of a 5 star resort at all, more like a 3 star. It definitely has the potential though.   Mierya was one of my favourite staff. She worked all over the resort, and although she sees so many customers, always remembered us. made sure we had drinks around the pool and the beach, but then also worked in the lobby too. She made sure we had everything we needed and wished us safe travels, thanked us for coming to that resort. definitely a credit to the resort.   Check in We arrived and there was no queue at check in, which was great. The guy told us nothing about the hotel, not even about the guest services desk. He took a photocopy of our passports, charged us the tax and we got our wrist bands and a map of the hotel (the hotel is huge). We had paid for the unlimited Xcaret, yet we didn't receive anything at check in, we had to ask about it later and we got told we had to go to the Xplor office (same floor as check in desk). Your supposed to get a sit down check in and told all about the hotel.   Check out Check out was shocking. The queues to check out can get really long. We had checked out, they gave us no information, just said, that's it, thank you. When our taxi arrived, we weren't allowed in it until we produced a voucher from checking out. We had to queue again to get this and another couple were the same. Make sure when they take the bracelet off, they give you a voucher.   Special occasion We stayed at the resort for 18 nights. It was my husbands 30th the day after we arrived and our 1st wedding anniversary near the end of our trip and they didn't acknowledge any of them! We asked guest services if there is anything we could do for our 1st wedding anniversary and we were told we had the honeymoon breakfast in bed was on our account, and we had to book it with them(so if we didn't ask we wouldn't have got it). we booked it for the morning of our actual anniversary, they delivered breakfast for 1, which was one omelette and a couple bits of bacon. We rang straight away and they said they would bring another, we waited an hour and half! then had to go to the buffet breakfast before it closed. We spoke to Sonia and Jared at guest services, they were great and re-booked it for the next day, but ruins your special occasion.   With the unlimited Xcaret, you get percentages off of things around the hotel. We got told about nothing going on. We asked about dinner on the beach, which we were supposed to get 20% off with the unlimited Xcaret but we got charged full price at $200!   The grounds / hotel The hotel itself is gorgeous. The grounds are big, but we walked everywhere, we were in building 22 and it was a 5 minute walk to the beach area and a 5/10 minute walk to the lobby area.   There was still alot of work going on in our building. they were re-doing the roof and god knows what else. I think we got a lie in without banging before 9am and shouting from the lobby of our building 2 days out of the 18 days we were there, so frustrating. You want to wake up on your own when on holiday.   The beach at the hotel is beautiful, there is fish in the sea, they leave you alone, if you take a little bit of bread and hold it, they will all swim to you and eat it.   It's also nice at the rock pool part of the beach. There isn't much shade on any parts of the beach though. They didnt have any umbrellas on the beach or at some of the pools. Only the first class pool and a few at the quiet pool.   Our safe was out of battery in our room, so we called for this to be fixed, the maintenance guys did try their best, there was 3 of them in and out for over an hour, but couldn't fix it. My husband said all it needed was change of battery. Another maintenance guy came in the morning and fixed it within 10 minutes.    We had a deluxe room. It was clean everyday, the air con worked great, The bathroom was fine, hot water all throughout the day. The balcony overlooked the jungle which was actually OK, not the greatest view. If you want a sea view you pretty much have to be in the royal level.   Food Men have to wear trousers in EVERY restaurant. We were not aware of this before our visit. There isn't much of a dress code, people were wearing caps, trainers, sandals, girls can wear literally anything! You see them pretty much what you'd wear to the beach, yet men cannot enter a restaurant wearing smart chino shorts and a shirt.   The hotel randomly closes 1 or 2 of the restaurants a night, which isn't advertised anywhere around the hotel, not even the concierges are aware on the day. There were numerous times where they closed 2 restaurants at a time so there were really long waiting lists to get a table in the other restaurants and there is only so much of the pizza and tacos you can eat.   Indoor buffet This buffet is good, has a great selection, but pretty much the same for breakfast and lunch most days. Each evening the food is changed, a seafood night, Mexican night, the pasta, you pick your ingredients and they cook it in front of you, sounds simple but it's delicious. We ended up getting our own drinks, as we hardly got waited on for drinks. Nothing against the staff, they work extremely hard and never stop, I just think they are slightly understaffed for the size of the place.   Beach Buffet Beach buffet is a nice setting, lovely overlook the sea. I got ill after eating the fruit from this buffet. Most days there were alot of flies over the food in this restaurant. I stuck to toast if we ever went to this restaurant. My husband got some pork for lunch on one of the days and it wasn't cooked properly, bright red blood in the middle of it. Again, we got our own drinks at this restaurant, I lost count of how many times I’d ordered a drink and didn't get it. Yet others around us would get their drinks. Again, the staff are extremely hard working, the buffet is just a big area and a lot of customers to serve, so it helps them out if you get your own, they have fruit juices, tea and coffee machine Pepsi and a bar all available in there.   The Steak house My review of the steak house is mixed. The first time we visited here, we waited about an hour, our order got lost and then the steak was disgusting, the whole thing was fatty and gristly. I didn't want to return.   The second time we visited here we had Jose Noh as our waiter, he was brilliant. Very quick with topping up water and making sure we had enough drinks. We ordered the burger slider as a shared starter and then I had a Texas burger, my husband had the Mexican burger and both of these were delicious.   Mediterranean restaurant The first time we ate here was like heaven! Carlos was our waiter, he was excellent, knew alot about the dishes, fast with drinks. The freshly made bread for starter was lovely, and I’d highly recommend the Mediterranean salmon. The second time we visited was awful, the food wasn't the same, as soon as we had our main meals, the waitress just walked past us, we were waiting with dirty plates and no drinks at all for 45 minutes.   The Mexican restaurant We really liked this restaurant. The first time we visited, the food was gorgeous, I got the pork loin with satay sauce and my husband ordered the steak fillet both delicious.   The second time we both ordered the same but the steak wasn't very nice, really gristly and something they had put on the steak looked like it had been cooked on a dirty pan or something. The pork loin was the same, I would highly recommend this dish but defo ask for extra sauce as the pork can be a little dry.   The churros and coconut ice cream were delicious.   The oriental restaurant Both times we visited this restaurant the food was great, very consistent. The first time we got a table straight away and service was great. I would recommend the Tso chicken, delicious!   The second time we visited we were put on a waiting list. there were a few of us waiting to be called outside the doors. They did not work down there list, we waited 45 minutes, another women waited 50 minutes, yet another couple got there after all of us and then got seated before us.   The seafood restaurant We visited here once on my husband’s 30th birthday ,the food was OK. I asked if they could bring a candle in a slice of cake (just off the dessert buffet) which they had been doing for others to my husband but they didn't, the restaurant wasn't that busy as we arrived later.   Dinner on the beach was good. By far the best meal we had during our whole stay. Only thing for us is we got overcharged! should have got 20% off due to having the unlimited Xcaret but Jared charged us full price.   Activity Team The activity team are fantastic, I don't know how anyone could fault them.   Cristina was great. We had no idea that there was an activities team, she gave us the schedules and let us know what was going on at Halloween and general day to day activities, Helped us with Spanish bingo! :D   I would recommend water aerobics with Cristina and Alejandra (Alex) it was really good and you have such a laugh.   The nightly shows are good. The dancers work so hard each day then perform the show that night. It's a different show each night.   Although the shows are great. There isn't anything else to do in the evenings at this hotel. The lobby has a saxophonist early evening. There is the sports bar, but it doesn't have much of an atmosphere.   The sports bar The sports bar is alright, it doesn't show any English games (well it didn't in the 18 days we were there). The air con is great in there and drinks are nice in there.   The nightclub We visited the nightclub a few times in our visit but was pretty empty the whole time.   Probably because I'm English and people can't smoke where ever they want here but I didn't like that people could smoke where they want around the hotel, I don't expect to be sitting in someone’s smoke when I’m watching the evening show or sitting by the pool. Maybe have one side of the pools smoking and the other non-smoking or something. The pools are pretty big.   Share Scheme You get offered to go on the tour with the sales guy to see if you'd like to become go into a share scheme. I think the tour is well worth it if you want to see what the hotel is about and what the other rooms and royal level is like. We had Mariano La'cuna He was really good, a really nice guy, they don't pressure you to buy but do give you all the information. It’s a good deal if you like the hotel. They have a lot more hotels around the world.   Said from Coco Bongos goes around the resort offering deals for Coco Bongos. We did the tour to McCarthy’s Irish bar, Senior frogs and on to coco bongos. It was such a great night, and Said was a good host. I would defo recommend.   We also booked the Mayan Heritage day out to Cozumel through Caesar at Amstar. We had a really good day but got mis sold. We were told you get your own jeep. Amstar told this to other guests on the trip also but when we got there we had to share with 2 young guys. The driver of the vehicle has the responsibility of it which in this case was my husband but an 18 year old boy was driving. It's all just dodgy, the jeeps are awful too, all falling apart with lots of warning lights on the dash. They Mayan show was great, you get to taste their homemade salsa and chocolate. Tequila tasting session. Snorkelling in Cozumel and a buffet lunch on Cozumel beach.

We would like to thank you for choosing Occidental as your holiday destination during your visit to Riviera Maya. Our guests play a key role in helping us to improve our services and we truly appreciate the feedback. I am charmed reading that you have enjoyed our wide variety of culinary offers that we have in the hotel. The five specialty restaurants that do not require reservations. They include the steak house, the Mexican gourmet restaurant, the Mediterranean restaurant, the oriental restaurant and our seafood restaurant. They are all hugely popular with guests, often receiving great feedback. Our main buffet is quite popular as well, since we change the theme every night. Our beach club restaurant, snack bar, Paco’s Tacos and La Piazza are popular for snacks. But I am sorry that the service did not fulfill your expectations in the restaurants, I will share your comments with the manager in order to avoid this kind of incidents in the future. Concerning the food please know that we have very strict controls for hygiene, which are supervised by Cristal international Standards, and external health and safety organization, conducts regular inspections of hygiene and quality that verifies our cleaning measures; I assure you that our dishes and glasses are cleaned by industrial machines and not by hand. All water, ice, drinks and food at the hotel we offer, weekly passes quality controls and it´s checked by Cristal, to ensure safety and health of our customers. We also run bacteriological tests, on the food and water, on a monthly basis to monitor our safety level and it is showing that everything is within the permitted range. Our staff is trained to monitor the food so that it is served at the proper temperature, to refill items every time they run out and the efficiency of the service. I have met with the Food & Beverage Manager to look into new ways we can ensure this level of service. We understand that most of the guests do not use to eat real Mexican food and that use to be the problem very often, most of the reports or complaints you will see are made by customers from different countries because of that reason. Very important to consider that the ingredients around the world are very different because of the ground were they grown or even the properties of the water but according our reports you can be sure that whatever you ate in the resort was in perfect conditions. We are truly sorry if you felt sick during your stay. I have noted all your comments and suggestions which I will constructively use to improve our services and facilities. We hope you give us the chance to demonstrate you that our main goal is to create unforgettable experiences with a high quality service. Regards.

    “GOOD”

Good resort, positives where the animals around the resort, everything is close. You can even walk to Xcaret or even take the little boat ride. All tours and playa del Carmen are really close by. Negatives is that beach space is tiny, no Wi-Fi unless you pay for it (expensive) other negative is you can't be around the whole resort with out being a exclusive member.
