    “4 Star NO!”

I write this review half way through a seven night all inclusive booked with First Choice flying from Exeter Sunday 06.00, We booked this holiday to take our daughter and 3 grandchildren on a "proper" holiday. Flight good arriving Lanzarote at 10.30 brilliant! Went to catch the coach as directed, although we had booked the holiday in January the reps knew nothing of our arrival, well done First Choice! After a delay we were eventually transported to the hotel to find out that access to the rooms was not until 15.00 hours, again, well done First Choice an advisory note in the hotel description would be helpful. We had booked two adjoining rooms, the receptionist could see that with young children ranging from one to five years to be hanging around for three hours would not be good for the little ones, she arranged for one of the rooms to be made available within 30 minutes. Thank you. The rooms for young families are quite good but in need of some refreshing. The food gives loads of choice and of reasonable quality however total chaos reigns in the replenishing of the dishes of food, if you require an omelette at breakfast be prepared for a long wait, the hard pressed lady cooking has about another six dishes to prepare at the same time. The dining room is dark and dismal. The polls are ok but throughout the day the surrounding sun bathing areas are strewn with rubbish, not the fault of the hotel staff, but the lazy so and who's cannot be bothered to walk 20 feet to a bin. We have stayed in a number of Occidental hotels this regrettably would!d win my vote for the worse by far. As for the rep of First Choice/Tui, we received a welcome note and invite to a welcome meeting 3 days into our holiday, I guess that says it all!

    “Best all inclusive I've had.”

No complaints for this place at all. Excellent entertainments team, delicious food, lovely drinks. Only small thing is the hairdryers are not the best for long thick hair. I would definatley recommend and stay here again.

“Enjoyable First Family Holiday Abroad ”

To begin with I would like to Thank every single staff member within this hotel!!! These are some of the most hardworking people going. I DONT just mean the main focus team members either.. Such as the Animation crew, receptionists, etc... I mean the hidden staff such as the cleaners, gardeners, hidden cooks... The ones that are behind the scenes so to speak! Ill go more into the staff later. Next this is going to be a long review so PLEASE bare with me.. I feel that I should give a honest review...good and bad...That's how others judge isn't it! This was to be our very first family holiday abroad.... Even though our children are now 14 and 10, we have done things back to front to the conventional marriage then babies... So because we were young parents we tended to holiday in the UK... So we were extremely excited for this holiday! The holiday was booked through Thomas Cook... And that is a completely different story...(not a good one at that) Anyway our initial impressions when we were dropped off by the coach were good. The entrance is large, clean and tidy. Walking into reception the area is spacious, clean and plenty of seating around. There are touch screens for guests to navigate the activities and the site at their own pleasure. These are exceptionally easy to use! We were welcomed by a really friendly young lady who spoke good English. She was very helpful in explaining where everything was on our site map..she welcomed the children too and not just us adults. Which was a nice touch. Once everything was explained and we had our all inclusive bands attached to our wrists we were given the 'big key'... Which she liked telling us her joke of how it's a little key attached to a huge wooden key for the locked luggage room. As our room wasn't quite ready we were able to lock our luggage in the luggage room and were told we were just in time for the lunch serving. So we were then free to use the restaurant... This was located just through from reception and down two flights of stairs. Well the room was beautiful :) At the bottom of the stairs is a till ( for those not all inclusive), a table set up with hand sanitising liquid, and a large touch screen menu... This let's guests see in clear pictures what is on offer. Each day of the week and the guests can even highlight allergens... (which was handy for myself) When you walk through the glass doors you are greeted by a huge room and first walk over a bridge as they have little waterfalls and brooks and plants. A lovely touch. As we hadnt used all inclusive before we felt odd just walking in and helping ourselves so we quickly located a staff member (looked like a member of the management team. Shoulder length dark hair, wore glasses. Young lady)and asked what we had to do.. Did we show our bands? Etc. She was extremely helpful and very friendly.. She explained that we just find a vacant table.. Take a seat and someone would be over to take our drinks order then we are free to help ourselves to anything we wanted in the room.. Well my children and my husband were in their element! The waitress who came over to take our drinks order was absolutely fantastic the entire stay... This lady should be praised...she never seemed to have a day off. I eventually asked her if she works all the time...she laughed and said the Thursday was her day off... I think she was secretly pleased when we asked her every day how she was and if she had enjoyed her day off...she looked as though no one had asked her those questions before. She was pleasant every time she served us...Seriously she was there when we woke and was on every meal shift and late at night could be seen clearing up on a night... I found out her name in the last couple of days.. She is a extremely small lady and is called Ana! High praise to this lady from the Haycock family! (if you mention to her tell her it was Clare, Carl, Ryan and Lucy who said goodbye to her on the 3rd Sept breakfast shift as we were going home that day) I digress....i however have a lot of allergies and intolerances so have to be more cautious on what I put on my plate. This day I managed to get something to satisfy my hunger after a long day...(we had been up at midnight to travel to the airport to fly at 7am) The food looked delicious and every single day I was so jealous that there was so much I could not try. This is NOT the fault of the hotel for not providing enough for those with allergies. Far from it. Like I said I have a lot. I am gluten, dairy intolerant and can't eat anything from a pig...tomatoes, mangoes and the list goes on...I am hard work to cater for. My family loved their first meals. They left extremely happy! Once we had eaten and were satisfied we felt awkward about just walking out but we were thanked and told to enjoy our day. We went back up to reception to see if our room was ready and we were told it was. We requested to use the hotel safe. This is to be paid for at a rate of €3 a day and a deposit of €3 too...for two weeks it worked out at €45 but we got our deposit back once checked out. This is paid upfront! You are then given a key and instructions on how to set your own code...this was easy enough to follow. We were asked if we wanted one or two room keys, we chose two incase we separated. The young girl then phoned for someone to come and help with our cases. We gathered them from the luggage room while we waited for the help. Even though he was quite happy to help get them. He went for a trolley when he saw we had four large cases with us... He then took each case from us and stacked them on the trolley and even took our hand luggage and the kids backpacks and my daughters teddy. He was extremely helpful! We nicknamed him Spanish Garry!! As he looked like one of our friends :) He then took us in the lift and showed us right to our door! Room 6206. If the management is reading this we checked in about 1pm on the 20th August 2017.. I'm sure you will be able to workout who we mean by checking rotas. I would like you to pass our thanks on to all these people!! Our welcome was a great one! Once we were shown to our room Spanish Garry unloaded our cases and left us to it. We had a look in our room as everyone does and initial thoughts were positive! The room was clean, tidy, spacious and had the balcony overlooking a pool as requested. We were pleased it was overlooking the kids pool as it wasn't as noisey as the larger pool. My only disappointment with this was the tree to the right of the balcony obscured quite a lot of the view to the main area of park so when the animation crew were doing their dance... Which was to become a favourite of ours...we couldn't enjoy the 'show' If on our balcony.. Even a little cut back would help with this! Right, the room.. As I said initial thoughts were positive.. However looking closer then there are things that could be improved!!! We asked for a superior family room. Well when we were booking it we were told it would have a separate sleeping area for the kids...besides the main bedroom and living room...it didn't. The children slept in the living area. It was a sofa which had a pull out single bed underneath. The children managed on these...but they weren't the best beds for them. My 14 year old son slept on the pull out one and if he moved ever so slightly it made terrible squeaking sounds. I feel this should be updated. To be fair the whole room could be updated. We were told it was a 4 star hotel and for the price we paid...which was over £5500 for two weeks we should have had 4star accommodation. I felt ours was pushing 3 at best. The whole room needs to be freshly painted and all the lighting changed as OH MY GOSH what a fight we had!! My husband works with electrics and we could not work out how the lighting system worked! It took us two days to figure out that if we switched the silver switch off by the door then ALL switches in the room stopped working!!! The ones in the bedroom...the main switch would only switch one of the bedside lamps on...and ONLY at its convenience! The other had to have the switch underneath it switch off for it to work!!! It took us a while to get to grips with this...it was a laugh for us anyway. So not a complaint but it needs looking into incase other rooms have this problem We had great air conditioning the entire time. But I found it to be noisey on a night and I don't sleep well so after a week or so of poor sleep i had to switch it off on a night but then we got too hot! The two wardrobes are huge and have plenty of space...not loads of hangers but we managed! You could always take extra if you need more! My biggest problem was the bathroom. Initially it looked clean but when you look closer it needs a MASSIVE overhaul. It is very dated with discolouration round the seals. Not mould but needs redoing. The bath is discoloured.. And it is awkward with the glass screen to reach round to switch the shower on and off. I have a lot of mobility problems and found this hard work! However the shower was lovely and hot whenever we needed it. Well apart from one day when the whole hotel was without water!!! Soon rectified though! The only major fault I think I can say I had with the room was the fridge inside the desk cupboard was not clean.. And didn't really keep our things cold. I keep medication in it and it kept them warm.. So I think the room if it was to be revamped then it would be a massive improvement! However do not get me wrong the room was cleaned every day... Well apart from our second day.. Think that was when water was off... This is where praise for other members of staff comes in to play. The cleaners were always around the hotel. The room cleaners knocked or buzzed the room buzzer before entering a room to see if it was empty.. My husband was in ours once but he sat on the balcony while she done her thing. He said she was so quick that he hadn't realised she had gone. The room was immaculate though. Towels replaced. Beds remade...floors mopped! Every day!!! High praise to these team members! The floors of the hotel inside and out were always being mopped and swept too... The outside was always being pressure washed! I don't understand how anyone can review this as being unclean!!! I agree with some when they say it could do with being modernised... But this is a big hotel and obviously costs money... It would have to be a work in progress! The pools are lovely and clean but are cold! This is refreshing in the heat but takes a bit of getting used to. We tried out the outdoor jacuzzi.. Again cold...which a lot of people expected it to be heated and soon left us to it. This however I feel needs replaced as the buttons don't work and it looks to be discoloured! The seating area is black stone too and gets incredibly hot...there are a lot of ants surrounding the jacuzzi and to sit in the edge resulted in me being bitten.. The pool side was always full of people but we went at peak time and so expected it to be busy. I find people to be lazy... There are others complaining about litter rolling about... There is only litter because lazy people can not be bothered to walk three foot from their sunbed to put their 17th cup of coke or beer in the bloody bin!!! Bone idle!!! It would make the staffs job a lot easier if they didn't have to go picking up cups and plates all the time! The staff were ran off their feet trying to top up food and drinks all the time... I honestly don't know how anyone can need to drink as much as what we saw some do...and then eat breakfast, snacks like burgers from the pool bar, then dinner, then hotdogs from the pool bar, then tea.... HOW?? How can anyone need that much?? Seriously... Just because you are all inclusive... Doesn't mean you have to eat the hotel out of business!!! Pure gluttony!! The poor staff couldn't keep up. The tropical tap was constantly frothing as it kept needing changed...the coke machine syrups were often out...and the slush machine was quite often off as it was used so often the slush was never cold enough to be slush...CALM DOWN PEOPLE!!! The sunbeds were supposedly monitored so they couldn't be reserved. We saw at 7am beds were taken with towels on and no-one on them until 11am-12pm.. Or other times people were out sunbathing at 7 and it wasn't even light!!! Sad sad people! There is no need. There are plenty of sunbeds and even if not then it's an excuse to go off and do something fun with your children instead of letting that 5 year old wander off and play in the large pool with armbands on while you lay in the sun getting drunk on all inclusive liquor!! I honestly witnessed this...another was an 7 or 8 year old babysitting and taking a 4 year old into the large pool!!! No adults! The animation crew... Wendy, Bethany, Lucia etc are fantastic! They must work themselves to the bone! From 1030 they were dancing and keeping everyone amused right up until the end of the night show. How do they get to rehearse? They done a different show every night!!! Considering everything the shows were fantastic! Quizzes, bingo, and performances!!! Can not fault them. Our faves were the Michael Jackson tribute and the x factor show!! I feel like I am going on forever... I apologise... There are shops outside the hotel. Mostly souvenirs... And a mini supermarket.. Not overly expensive considering. The offside hotel restaurant (all inclusive get one free visit per week) was beautiful. Our first visit was prebooked for us by Thomas Cook for 7pm on Wed 23rd August. The waitresses and chefs were fantastic. Food was delicious and quick to be served! We booked for our second visit same time the following week and it was again faultless!! Thank youuu! I feel like I could probably write a lot more... But I feel like I should also be wrapping this up The games room was a favourite of my children when waiting for the evening shows to start as they were too old for the mini disco outside! Most things cost €1 to play. The crazy golf and play area I feel could be updated as a lot of the golf holes were damaged in the grass area... And the playground seems dated!! However kids enjoyed the golf and my daughter the park! My son seemed more impressed by the cats we often saw walking the grounds. Very friendly!! Lovely... But we are cat lovers :) On the whole we would definitely recommend Occidental Lanzarote Mar for the staff alone...we never met any rude team members. All were pleasant (even if some aren't as clued up with bus information as we would like) but we would also say the place needs modernising!!! I hope I have helped by being as honest as possible and again I thank the staff and management at the Occidental Lanzarote Mar for making our very first family holiday abroad a very enjoyable and relaxed one! We appreciate everything!!!! Now you can have a well earned rest after reading all of that!! Hahahahaha

    “Great family holiday with friends”

We travelled here as a group of 2 families with children ranging from 1 to 9 years old. The hotel was perfect for us and catered for all our needs. We upgraded from a superior family room to a family suite, which gave us a bit more space in the room, although we didn't spend much time in the room in the end. It's worth waiting to upgrade any rooms til you get the hotel as its much cheaper than through the holiday companies. The food served at breakfast, lunch and dinner was of a good standard and there was plenty of choice for everyone. The all inclusive package was great for drinks as well. The entertainment team were great and there was a lot going on during the day. This was followed up with evening shows. Our kids all loved the swimming pools. As people have mentioned before they were a bit cold but once you was in it was fine. I would definitely recommend this hotels for families
