Lanzarote bajo el mar

Sculpture 0: Welcome

Sculpture 1: The "Jolateros"

The portrayal of children sitting in brass boats is a reference to an old boat racing tradition celebrated in Lanzarote. It's also a metaphor of our children's uncertain future that would mean one day having to sail in boats made of thin brass material.

Sculpture 2: Inmortal

The sculpture shows a body of a man laid on top of a pile of concrete sticks as part of a traditional funeral ceremony. The body has been moulded from a local fisherman living on the island of La Graciosa on the north coast of Lanzarote.

Sculpture 3: The Raft of Lampedusa

An infamous scene of the shipwrecked French frigate Medusa from the 1800s portrayed by French painter, Théodore Géricault is depicted here. This sculpture is both an acknowledgement of those who lost their lives on that journey and a reflection on more current humanitarian crises.

Sculpture 4: Disconnected

The scene of a couple taking a selfie with the presence of 'The Raft of Lampedusa' in the background is a reflection of today's digital age. It eloquently portrays our increasing self-referential behaviour, where tragic moments are turned into events worthy of being captured.

Sculpture 5: Crossing Rubicon

The Crossing Rubicon shows a group of 35 figures walking towards a large wall with a gate dividing two realities. This flawed barrier, situated within the ocean's fludity serves no meaningful purpose as it can be easily surpassed in any direction.

Sculpture 6: Hybrid Garden

The Hybrid Garden successfully illustrates Lanzarote's rich vegetation whilst merging nature and humanity into one. The half human, half cactus sculptures play a pertinent role in executing this vision.

Sculpture 7: Photo op

Photographers placed at various locations of the museum again want to raise the debate on the excessive documentation and immortilisation of our surroundings in our contemporary society.

Sculpture 8: Portal

The Portal symbolises a female hybrid figure glancing down at a mirror reflecting the ocean surface above. The frame of the mirror contains small compartments designed as living areas to attract the surrounding sea life.

Sculpture 9: Hybrid Garden

The Hybrid Garden successfully illustrates Lanzarote's rich vegetation whilst merging nature and humanity into one. The half human, half cactus sculptures play a pertinent role in executing this vision.

Sculpture 10: Deregulated

This scene shows businessmen in suits playing on a children's playground whilst seemingly alienated from the real world.

Sculpture 11: Human Twist

The largest piece of the Atlantic Museum consists of 200 life-sized sculptures placed to form a big human circle on the ocean floor. The positions of the bodies are serving as a reef inhabitable by the surrounding marine life.

Sculpture 12: The Raft of Lampedusa

An infamous scene of the shipwrecked French frigate Medusa from the 1800s portrayed by French painter, Théodore Géricault is depicted here. This sculpture is both an acknowledgement of those who lost their lives on that journey and a reflection on more current humanitarian crises.
