What you need to know
The Timanfaya National Park is an essential stop on the itinerary of any tourist new to the Island of Volcanoes. Its natural setting, with its scant vegetation and colour palette of ochre, red and ash tones, appears to be the kind of landscape you’d be more likely to find on Mars or on the moon than on Earth, and is the result of the volcanic eruptions which, between 1730 and 1736, wrought dramatic changes on the island of Lanzarote. Walking over this strange terrain is always a powerful experience. So, if you’d like a little extra excitement, the Lanzarote Camel Safari experience is perfect for you.
First Minute Travel offers several pick-up points all over the island, and takes customers to the town of Yaiza where, at the base of Timanfaya, the traditional camel stations are to be found. It is worth pointing out that, despite the fact that locally they are referred to as ‘camels’, they are actually dromedaries, as they only have one hump.
Be that as it may, the camel caravan sets off from here on its tour of the southern face of the Timanfaya volcano. At first you may find the animals’ unique, swaying walk strange, and even rather uncomfortable. You will quickly forget that, however, as you begin to enjoy scenery that will remain in your memory for a long time to come, and which is certain to gain many ‘likes’ on Instagram.
