Stop at: Visit Palma
Palma, capital of the Spanish island of Majorca, is a resort city located in the western Mediterranean Sea. The immense cathedral of Santa Maria, a Gothic monument that was begun in the 13th century, dominates the skyline of the bay of Palma.
Stop at: Old town
Stop at: La Lonja
La Lonja de Palma is the finest civil Gothic building in Mallorca.
The great activity that existed in the port of Palma de Mallorca made it necessary to construct an important building, La Lonja, as a mercantile exchange and a meeting place for merchants.
Built between 1420 and 1452 by Guillem Sagrera.
It has a rectangular floor plan covered with ribbed vaults. It forms a single space divided into twelve parts by six pillars without base or capital that rise towards the ceiling to form the ribs of the vaults. These six pillars resemble stone palm trees.
Above the entrance door is a large sculpture of the Guardian Angel, attributed to Guillem Sagrera himself, who was a sculptor as well as an architect.
The angel holds a sash with the legend "Defender of Merchandise".
The Lonjas were public buildings for mercantile uses, commercial contracts, banking operations, etc.
Stop at: Parque del Mar
It has a large saltwater lake that symbolises the sea, which used to touch the city walls. It is surrounded by an esplanade with trees and the area with the most vegetation is at the eastern end, where there is also a children's play area.
This park, in the lake area, overlooks a large sunny spot. From the Royal Palace of the Almudaina or from the Paseo Marítimo we can contemplate this large space of one of the main urban parks of the city, with a surface area of nine hectares.
