    “Needs some improvements”

    The rooms were spacious and clean and we had a beautiful view of the adult pool and the ocean. If you had an adjoining room then it could be quite noisy. The grounds were well kept, staff were always cutting the grass, painting, doing general maintenance. The food was rather hit and miss, the buffet was not very good and the grill that was open all the time was really bad. They only served hamburgers, hotdogs, cold french fries and other greasy offerings. The Colombian a la carte restaurant was very good and we also had a good meal in the Italian Trattoria. The steak house was really bad, I would skip it. Also the service was very bad in both the buffet and at the bars. Getting a cup of hot tea was the most difficult part of any meal. The hotel is located about 30 minutes out of town, a free shuttle is offered. Being out of town was nice it was quiet. The big problem right now is that there is lots of construction going on between the hotel and town so a 30 minute shuttle turned into an hour. The beach is not what most travellers would expect, the water is brown and not the usual Caribbean turquoise, that did not bother me but I know some thought it was ugly.

    “Great Value for the Price!”

    We stayed at this hotel for 10 days and greatly enjoyed it. We usually stay at 4 & 5-star resorts and this was overall an excellent experience for it being a 3.5 star. The price was stellar given the accommodations! Our favorite thing is that this hotel was farther out from the main city, but only a 25-27 minute ride by (free) shuttle. It never took us longer than 30 minutes even with traffic. The shuttle was easy to reserve; we were able to get on/off it without reservations all the time, but they would like for you to make a reservation the day before. We stayed in another hotel closer to the city prior to staying at Occidental and we became so irritated by harassment from vendors. Staying at this resort was truly a breath of fresh air and it was still fun to plan trips into the city then come back to our relaxing atmosphere. The food was great, probably my favorite part haha! I can’t imagine anyone complaining about going hungry/not having options, there was a wide variety and snack served all throughout the day. I was always excited to see what they would be serving and I also have food sensitivities which were easy to navigate with the buffets. The service is just OK (remind yourself, 3.5 stars), they were super pleasant and friendly, but sometimes seems like they didn’t have enough staff when it comes to cleaning off tables/refilling wine, etc. We ate at the Colombian restaurant one night too and that was great with better service! A little tips for the staff also goes a long way. The booze was not my favorite, often giving me indigestion the day after I consumed more than 3 drinks, but the bartenders hook you up nonetheless. We also weren’t expecting top shelf liquor given the price we paid for our trip. The resort grounds were very clean and well kept – no complaints there aside from occasional funky smell which you will get even in 5 star resorts in remote areas/foreign countries. As other reviewers said, don’t take it lightly - the beds actually ARE HARD. And I mean HARD as in: I DIDN’T KNOW IT WAS POSSIBLE FOR MATTRESSES TO BE MADE SO HARD! I have never in my life experienced a mattress like that one, so what I did to alleviate the situation was sleep with one of the foam pillows underneath my knees to help keep my spine alinged. If you have any kind of sensitivities or back problems with hard mattresses, do not stay at this resort – you WILL be miserable. The shower in the room had some mold/mildew on the soap dish which was unpleasant as well. Overall the room was very clean though, the maid refilled our fridge regularly. One more annoyance – we were on the 5th floor of our building all the way in the corner (AMAZING VIEWS!) but I guess we were near the maid closet and occasionally in the mornings, the maids would congregate there and wake us up. The beach was nice and clean, although we didn’t spend much time there because we preferred the pool. Cartagena isn’t like the Caribbean experience of clear blue water and white sand; the beach is still very pleasant nonetheless and has so much space for fun activities like games, entertainment, etc. The entertainment at the resort was absolutely STELLAR! We were surprised to learn that people would possibly complain about the entertainment. We won a dance competition which (of course) we got dragged into but ended up winning a bottle of rum + bracelets. They had a very special dinner on a Thursday night at the pool area including lobster tail, sushi, and just a massive buffet. We had a beach party with a bonfire, lots of great music, culture and games! The pool had great music. The size of the resort overall was nice; not like those larger resorts where you need a shuttle to get around and not too small. Overall I’d give this resort another visit for sure given the price, we had an amazingly relaxing time and great experience. For being one of the few all-inclusive resorts in Cartagena, they do it well! I’d definitely recommend staying here!

    “Not even a 3 stars resort.”

    I give 2 1/2 stars for this resort overall. Despite the rooms ( modern, comfortable and spacious) everything else is 2 1/2 stars maximum. Ugly beach. The 3 special restaurants ( requires reservations) were TERRIBLE: Uncooked past, steak as hard as a rock! Cold food. In the menu they offer " beef empanadas" , so we ordered ....the waiter brought us cheese empanadas, when we asked for the beef empanadas from the menu, he said they did not have it!! The snacks were poor quality: everyday hot dogs, grease and tasteless french fries.... ahhh and the ice cream was awful. Flies and birds everywhere by the buffet. In the adults pool they did not have pina coladas, you have to walk all the way to the bar close to the beach to order one!!! The adult's pool was dirty, I had to ask the life guard if he could clean it and take out the insects of the water! We booked massages, the masseur had no technique, very amateur. My suggestion is do not go because this resort charges you $$$ like a 5 stars resort and they delivery to you a 2 1/2 stars service.

    “Nice rooms!”

    The dinning service was wonderful. The servers are attentive. The food was good. The suites are big. The beach was nice and swimming pools are nice. They need to work on welcoming guests at the reception. We got there two hours before our group arrived and had to wait for two hours (we did not have reservation info) but no one offered us a drink or anything.

    “Ok”

    location is not good. you have to take a bus to the city which is 30 min long, which is the only reason why I wouldn't've stayed in this hotel. the food is alright. the rooms are nice and the staff is excellent. there are two pools: one for adults and one for entertainment. the good thing is that everything is included
